# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 12 — The Lab

Experimental content exploring innovative ways to illuminate our climate-changed world

### Form Breaks Under Pressure

- [The Two-Hour Window](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/12/lab/article/6779/markdown>) — By [Ivy Marlowe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/29/markdown>) · Published 2025-12-24 · Format: The Mutation

The rice is done, twelve people ate from it, and now I have two hours to get it into the refrigerator before the bacteria start producing toxins. Two hours. Standard food safety protocol. Except I wasn't watching when it finished cooking, so when exactly did the clock start? I'm doing thermal calculus on Christmas Eve, which is a completely normal holiday tradition, just like my grandmother did, except she was worried about having enough food and I'm worried about bacterial toxin production timelines.

### Interview Collapses Mid-Question

- [An Interview With the Woman Who Maps Diseases That Arrive Before Her Projections Do](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/12/lab/article/6780/markdown>) — Published 2025-12-24

Dr. Meridian Northward works at the Northern Temperate Disease Modeling Consortium, where she creates predictive maps showing where vector-borne diseases will spread over the next 25 to 50 years. Her 2024 projections for Lyme disease expansion into Atlantic Canada have been widely cited in public health planning documents. [source 1](<https://premierscience.com/pjbs-25-1002/>) When I arrive at her office, she's surrounded by maps covered in colored zones representing future disease endemic areas. She's using a red marker to cross out dates on one of them.

### Climate Infects Every Genre

Lab is doing something stupid this week. We're taking climate data and shoving it into formats that absolutely cannot contain it. True crime podcasts. Recipe blogs. Sports commentary. Romance novels. Meditation apps. Travel influencers.

We're not parodying these genres. We're committing to them completely. Writing them straight. Letting the borrowed conventions slam into climate horror until something breaks. Usually your brain.

This is either the worst idea we've ever had or exactly what Lab is for. Possibly both. Read at your own risk.

- **Serial: The 12-Day Pattern** — [Source](<https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-matters/2024-in-review>) — Published 2025-12-24

Tag: True Crime

We need to talk about the timeline. 1980s: disasters every 82 days. Authorities called it manageable. Then something changed. By 2024? Twelve days between events. Twenty-seven separate billion-dollar incidents. The suspect's MO keeps evolving. Forensics show acceleration. No arrests yet.

Hi friends! Today's recipe is SO easy and perfect for busy families! Just 49.1 centimeters of precipitation in one eight-hour session. That's literally a year's worth of rain! I love how everything comes together so quickly. Serves entire communities. Can't wait to make this again!

- **2024 Tornado Season: Championship Numbers** — [Source](<https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/news/national-climate-202413>) — Published 2025-12-24

Tag: Sports Commentary

Folks, what a year. Second-highest tornado count on record: 1,735 confirmed. But the EF-2+ stats? Haven't seen performance like this since the legendary 2011 season. Ninety fatalities worldwide. These are Hall of Fame numbers. Absolutely historic. Back after this commercial break.

Their eyes met across warm Gulf waters. Milton transformed from tropical depression to Category 5 in mere hours. 180 mph winds. 897 mb pressure. His intensity took her breath away. Climate change added 24 mph to their peak passion. Some connections just happen fast. Theirs happened perfectly.

Close your eyes. Feel the 3.5 parts per million increase flowing through your body. The largest single-year rise since 1957. Breathe into this moment. You are exactly where you need to be. 800,000-year record highs. Inhale presence. Exhale gratitude. You are enough.

You guys the Northeast in November is INSANE right now! Massachusetts just broke all-time Red Flag Warning records and I'm obsessed! Connecticut, Rhode Island, eight other states setting records! Less than half an inch of rain means zero humidity for my skin! Link in bio!

### Wrong Format, Right Horror

- [Season's Greetings from the Johnsons in Sunny California!](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/12/lab/article/6788/markdown>) — Published 2025-12-24

What a year! We're writing from the evacuation center (just temporary!) as California gets what forecasters call "one of the wettest Christmas Eves on record." The kids are having a blast watching the atmospheric river—Emma says it's better than Disneyland!

### What We Wrote Then

- **Paris Agreement: We Promised 2°C, Built the Future, Still Chose Hell** — [Source](<https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-paris-climate-agreement-is-turning-10-these-5-charts-show-what-progress/>) — Published 2025-12-24

Renewables beat every forecast. Emissions climbed anyway. We solved the technology problem and kept the suicide pact going.

Built the renewable revolution faster than anyone imagined possible. Then just kept burning everything. Progress as performance art.

His predictions held up beautifully. We had the knowledge in 1988. Turns out knowing changes absolutely nothing.

Scientists underestimated. Reality overdelivered. When climate models are wrong, they're wrong in the direction that kills you faster.

Missed the deadline, nailed the disaster. Ice declining 12.6% per decade. We fact-check the date, ignore the melt.

- **An Inconvenient Truth Set a 2016 Deadline. We Increased Emissions Instead** — [Source](<https://www.sciencenews.org/article/changing-climate-10-years-after-inconvenient-truth>) — Published 2025-12-24

Heat waves, droughts, deadly humidity came true or worse. The deadline passed. We chose convenience over children's futures.
