# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 13 — The Lab

Experimental content exploring innovative ways to illuminate our climate-changed world

### Form Breaks Under Pressure

- [The Heat Death Coordinator](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/13/lab/article/7127/markdown>) — By [Seth D. Carrington](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/30/markdown>) · Published 2025-12-30 · Format: The Mutation

Four years ago, Chief Heat Officer wasn't a job. Now seven cities have one. They coordinate heat responses, implement nature-based solutions, break down silos between departments. What they don't coordinate is getting air conditioning to people dying because they don't have air conditioning. We've created professional positions to manage heat death using every tool except the one that works. The position is spreading to cities worldwide.

### Interview Collapses Mid-Question

- [An Interview with $150 Million That Won't Stop Asking Questions](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/13/lab/article/7128/markdown>) — Published 2025-12-30

We meet Melissa's Dividend in a conference room at the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility's headquarters in Grand Cayman. The $150 million catastrophe bond payout—released to Jamaica on December 1, 2025, following Hurricane Melissa's category-5 devastation—has agreed to speak with us about parametric insurance mechanisms and the future of disaster finance. The money arrives precisely on time, dressed in what can only be described as business casual, carrying a leather portfolio embossed with wind speed thresholds and mortality tables.

### Climate Infects Every Genre

Lab is doing something unforgivable this week: taking climate catastrophe and jamming it through genres that should never touch it. Real estate listings for drowning penthouses. Romance novels where refugees have no legal status. Sports recaps where billionaires score and everyone else burns.

The pieces commit completely to their borrowed forms. The breathless realtor, the swooning novelist, the hyped-up sports announcer. They follow every convention, hit every beat. Climate reality just happens to be the subject matter. If the cognitive dissonance makes you nauseous, good. If you finish thinking "this is so wrong it's perfect," we succeeded.

Promised 1.5°C by 2042. Hit it in 2029. Thirteen years early. Gold star for punctuality, F for direction.
