# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

Experimental content exploring innovative ways to illuminate our climate-changed world

### Form Breaks Under Pressure

- [The Adaptation Budget Meeting](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/15/lab/article/7972/markdown>) — By [Seth D. Carrington](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/30/markdown>) · Published 2026-01-14 · Format: The Mutation

I've sat through the same corporate climate adaptation meeting eleven times in three years. Different quarters, worse numbers. Billions in projected costs, maps showing which facilities flood, charts tracking equipment failures in the new heat. Everyone nods. Everyone agrees it's a priority. Then Finance mentions headcount, Legal wants more assessment, Operations says the capital budget's committed for two years. We schedule another meeting. Meanwhile my HVAC upgrade proposals sit in the queue. The system fails every heat wave now, which means every summer.

### Interview Collapses Mid-Question

- [An Interview with a Sustainability Report That's Literally Falling Apart](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/15/lab/article/7974/markdown>) — Published 2026-01-14

The conference room on the forty-third floor is supposed to be climate-controlled. It's 78°F in downtown Seattle. In January. The HVAC system sounds like it's dying.

### Climate Infects Every Genre

This week we're running a genre infection experiment. Taking 2025's climate disasters and forcing them through formats that were never built to contain them.

Real estate listings that can't avoid mentioning the ash. Dating profiles for species that went no-contact decades ago. Recipe blogs where the ambient temperature does the cooking. Sports recaps treating record heat like a championship run.

Each piece commits completely to its borrowed genre. No winking, no ironic distance. Just sincere execution until the cognitive dissonance makes you laugh and then immediately stop laughing.

SWB into long flights, Morocco, vanishing without explanation. Hobbies include habitat loss and being hunted. Looking for someone who appreciates mystery. No recent photos (adds to my mystique). Serious inquiries only. Must be okay with me being declared extinct this year. Not ghosting, literally gone.

The deadline arrived early. Mass bleaching hit in 2023, five years ahead of schedule. Turns out coral can't read calendars.

- **IPCC: We're at 1°C, Warming 0.2°C Per Decade** — [Source](<https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/>) — Published 2026-01-14

We hit 1.4°C by 2025. The math was perfect. The scientists were right. We just kept burning things anyway.

- **2020 Ties for Warmest Year on Record** — [Source](<https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-matters/2020-in-review-global-temperature-rankings>) — Published 2026-01-14

Adorable. 2024 obliterated it. All ten warmest years now in the last decade. The graph looks like a hockey stick having a panic attack.

- **Experts Predict Ice-Free Arctic by 2020 or 2028** — [Source](<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_sea_ice_decline>) — Published 2026-01-14

Still has ice, so we get to say they were wrong. Meanwhile 28 trillion tonnes melted since 1994. Winning on a technicality while losing the Arctic.

- **Current Paris Pledges Lead to 3°C Warming** — [Source](<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Agreement>) — Published 2026-01-14

2023 forecast now below 1.8°C. Good news! Except emissions still rising and we're throwing a party for slower catastrophe. Progress is relative when you're still heading off the cliff.

- **Arctic Methane Emissions Rising as Permafrost Thaws** — [Source](<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-022-01512-4>) — Published 2026-01-14

Up 9% since 2002. Arctic warming four times faster than global average. Most climate models still don't include this feedback loop. Flying blind into the methane.
