# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 18 — The Lab

Experimental content exploring innovative ways to illuminate our climate-changed world

### Form Breaks Under Pressure

- [When Eco-Friendly Became Illegal](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/18/lab/article/9303/markdown>) — By [Seth D. Carrington](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/30/markdown>) · Published 2026-02-04 · Format: The Mutation

We're standing in the warehouse looking at 40,000 units we can't ship. The boxes are fine. The product inside is fine. The problem is a single word printed on the packaging. That word just became illegal in the EU three weeks ago.

### Interview Collapses Mid-Question

- [The Philosopher Who Proved Climate Inaction Is Absurd and Then Couldn't Stop Asking Questions](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/18/lab/article/9304/markdown>) — Published 2026-02-04

In a small office at the University of Somewhere-or-Other (he asked me not to be specific about the location, citing "professional considerations"), I met with Dr. Wendell Circularis, whose 2025 paper in the *Journal of Applied Philosophy* formally defined **climate absurdism** as a distinct philosophical position. The office was unremarkable except for a poster of Sisyphus on one wall and a melting glacier on another. When I asked if the juxtaposition was intentional, he said, "I honestly can't remember anymore."

### Climate Infects Every Genre

This week we're running climate reality through genre containers that have no business holding it. Wildfire mortality as medical drama. Extinction as dating profile. Flood risk as home renovation show. Drought as wellness content.

Each piece commits completely to its borrowed format. We're not parodying these genres. We're inhabiting them with full sincerity while climate truth creates its own dark comedy. The absurdity isn't added. It emerges from the mismatch between enthusiastic genre conventions and actual horror.

Method acting for the apocalypse. The cognitive dissonance cuts both ways.

LA County ERs logged 409 wildfire-adjacent admissions this January. Respiratory distress, cardiac events, stress complications. The attending physicians performed heroically during this 7% mortality spike. Such compelling patient arcs! Smoke inhalation creates the most dramatic triage scenarios. Our trauma teams really showed up for this season's surprise plot twist.

Edwards Aquifer dropped 250 cubic feet per second below average and honestly? It's teaching us SO much about gratitude. Stage 5 restrictions are basically a mindfulness practice. Your lawn's dormancy is actually a gorgeous surrender to what is. Less water means more presence. I'm learning to honor the lack. Join me in reframing this drought as abundance.

Last active: Morocco, February 1995. Into long migrations, Siberian summers, Mediterranean vibes. Seeking: any member of my species. Any. I'm not picky about breeding plumage anymore. Hobbies included mud-probing, invertebrate hunting. Used past tense there. Swipe right if you're out there. I know you're probably not. But maybe?

Tag: Property Flip

This week we're flipping Florida's $50 billion in overvalued flood-zone properties! Ignore those 1% annual flooding probabilities. Buyers want waterfront! We'll stage with sandbags as rustic accents, market rising insurance premiums as exclusive coverage opportunities. Budget? Your retirement savings plus equity. But look at those ocean views expanding every year!

Australia's January heatwave delivered the ultimate natural sauna. Ceduna hit 121°F. No gym membership required. Climate change made this 1.6°C hotter than baseline, intensifying your metabolic response. Hydration is weakness leaving the body. Feel that heat stroke building character. Your emergency cooling system is getting SHREDDED out here.

January's torrential rains created incredible aquatic experiences across Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe! Rainfall intensity up 40% since pre-industrial times means more splash zones. Thirty travelers got fully immersed. Roads washed away? Nature's way of saying extend your stay! Infrastructure collapse is just unplanned itinerary flexibility. - **Climate Tipping Points—Too Risky to Bet Against** — [Source](<https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-03595-0>) — Published 2026-02-04

They warned at 1°C we'd trigger cascades. We hit 1.1°C. Coral reefs tipped October 2025. "Too risky" just meant inevitable.

- **IPCC: Limiting Warming Requires Unprecedented Changes in Society** — [Source](<https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/>) — Published 2026-02-04

Cut emissions 45% by 2030. Instead we increased them. All 45 progress indicators off track. The roadmap was flawless. We just never left the driveway.

- **Heat Is On for 2017, Just Not Record-Setting** — [Source](<https://www.climatecentral.org/news/heat-is-on-for-2017-21011>) — Published 2026-02-04

Correctly predicted a slight dip from 2016's heat. Then we blew past 1.5°C anyway. Being right about details while missing catastrophe.

- **Arctic Sea Ice Primed for Phenomenal Melt Season** — [Source](<https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/arctic-sea-ice-primed-phenomenal-melt-season>) — Published 2026-02-04

2019: Maybe ice-free by 2030, worst case. 2024: Could happen within three years. We're living inside their most pessimistic scenario now.

- **Obama: Even Meeting Every Target Gets Us Partway There** — [Source](<https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/remarks-the-paris-agreement-climate-change>) — Published 2026-02-04

Paris bent warming from 4.8°C to maybe 1.7°C if everyone complied. Ten years later: 95% missed their pledges. "Partway" was obscenely optimistic.
