# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 20 — The Lab

Experimental content exploring innovative ways to illuminate our climate-changed world

### Staying Put Manual

- [How to Stay Safer in Places Getting More Dangerous](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/20/lab/article/10052/markdown>) — By [Maya Jiménez](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/19/markdown>) · Published 2026-02-17 · Format: Staying Put Manual

The insurance letter arrived in July, the kind with official letterhead and apologetic language. My cousin in Phoenix read it twice, then called me. Her mother's doctors are there. Her daughter finally has friends. She can't move, she said, her voice tight. So what do I do?

### Architecture of Permanence

- [The Architecture of Impossible Optimism, 2020-2030](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/20/lab/article/10053/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-02-17 · Format: Architecture of Permanence

I've been working at the Climate Transition Archive for six years. Today I'm writing wall text for Gallery One. The object is an air conditioning unit.

### The Immobility Counselor

- [An Interview with a "Staying Coach" Who Helps People Accept They'll Never Leave](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/20/lab/article/10054/markdown>) — Published 2026-02-17

Meadow Staywell's office sits on the second floor of a strip mall in Phoenix, wedged between a vape shop and a tax preparation service that shuttered in December. The waiting room has six chairs, a water cooler that gurgles apologetically, and a laminated poster showing the five stages of grief with clip art flames photoshopped into the background. Through the interior window, I watch Staywell arrange papers on her desk with the careful precision of someone who's done this too many times. She's 38, holds dual licenses as a therapist and financial counselor, and has somehow built a practice around helping people accept they're never leaving.

### The Calculation

- [Calculation: The Immobility Tax on Climate Refugees](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/20/lab/article/10055/markdown>) — Published 2026-02-17

Moving costs $8,400 minimum: $4,300 transport, $4,100 deposits. A household earning $45,000 annually needs $108,000 to qualify for median rent in climate-safe metros ($3,600/month at 2.5x income requirement). They earn half that.

### Adaptation Toolkit

The day after Washington's Birthday feels like the right time to talk about staying put. About what you do when leaving costs more than you have and the heat keeps coming anyway.

These aren't solutions. They're accommodations to a world that already changed. Strategies for people who can't afford to move or won't abandon what they built. Some cost thousands of dollars. Some cost nothing but require admitting you need help processing emotions you weren't supposed to have.

All of them start from the same place: we're learning to live in places that are learning to kill us.

Tag: Thermal Defense

Cool roof coatings run $0.75-$1.50 per square foot. Surface temps drop 50-80°F. Your building stays habitable longer. Energy bills fall 15-30%. The coating lasts fifteen years, maybe twenty. Then you reapply because the heat got worse.

- **Climate Cafés Process What Therapy Won't** — [Source](<https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_climate_cafes_are_helping_people_process_their_emotions>) — Published 2026-02-17

Tag: Emotional Triage

Free mutual aid spaces where people gather to feel their climate emotions without fixing them. No therapist required. Just facilitation training and others who understand. One Canadian study found reduced burnout, increased hope. Sparse research otherwise.

- **Insulate Everything, Slow the Heat Down** — [Source](<https://homeguide.com/costs/insulation-cost>) — Published 2026-02-17

Tag: Building Envelope

Whole-house insulation runs $1,600-$8,000, averaging $1.26-$2.78 per square foot. Energy savings hit 15-30%. Your home becomes a better fortress against temperature extremes. Northern climates need R-30 to R-40. Southern regions manage with less.

Tag: Public Refuge

Libraries, community centers, government buildings open when temperatures spike. No cost to users if you can reach them. Critical for people whose landlords won't fix broken AC. Seventy percent of low-income apartments have inadequate cooling.

Parametric microinsurance pays when temperature thresholds are exceeded for three days. No loss documentation required. In Gujarat, 225,000 informal women workers enrolled. Payouts arrive within days. Market grew from $11.7 billion to projected $29.3 billion.

Strategic vegetation networks dropped Medellín's temperature by 2°C through shade and evapotranspiration. Vegetation can reduce nearby air temps by 4°F. Warning: increases humidity in some climates, potentially worsening heat index. Arid regions warm instead.
