# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 22 — Human Stories

Stories of communities and individuals adapting to unprecedented environmental change

### Endurance Country

- [Lindsay Coker Came Home](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/22/lived/article/10737/markdown>) — By [Maya Jiménez](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/19/markdown>) · Published 2026-03-04 · Format: Endurance Country

In the spring of 2023, Lindsay Coker stood in a greening pasture near Texola, Oklahoma, and allowed herself to say the word hope. She'd left Houston to come home, to help her parents run Angus cattle on land where her family had learned what the grass could give. Three years without rain had already forced her to bend the principles she was raised on.

### The Inheritance Question

- [Hollis Treadway's Two-Tab Problem](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/22/lived/article/10740/markdown>) — Published 2026-03-04

*Hollis Treadway does not exist. She is a composite character built from documented conditions across the Southern Plains: six consecutive drought years, a national cattle herd at its lowest point since 1941, record wildfire seasons, and a generation of ranching families facing decisions with no good answers. Every number in this conversation is real. The person holding them is not. If she feels familiar, that's the point.*

### The Largest Fire

- [The Ranger Road Fire Burned 283,000 Acres Across Oklahoma and Kansas. For Some Ranchers, It's the Second Time in Nine Years.](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/22/lived/article/10741/markdown>) — Published 2026-03-04

Michael Kelsey of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association keeps hearing the same word from producers in Beaver County: generations. Not just cattle lost, but decades of careful genetic selection, entire breeding lines wiped out in an afternoon. One rancher lost 400 head. Another in Kansas, 500. The numbers are still coming in.

### Two Kinds of Response

- [The Sixth Year of a Bad Year](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/22/lived/article/10738/markdown>) — By [Maya Jiménez](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/19/markdown>) · Published 2026-03-04 · Format: Two Kinds of Response

The federal disaster programs keeping Oklahoma Panhandle ranchers alive were designed for a bad year, maybe two. Michael Kelsey at the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association is navigating year six, coordinating relief across programs with different deadlines, different caps, and different forms, all flowing through county offices that have been processing disaster designations for the same counties since 2020. The machinery runs. The drought doesn't break. And the better Kelsey holds the line, the less anyone beyond the Panhandle asks whether the line should have moved.

- [Before the Smoke](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/22/lived/article/10739/markdown>) — By [Maya Jiménez](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/19/markdown>) · Published 2026-03-04 · Format: Two Kinds of Response

On a Saturday in late February, Travis County Fire Chief Ken Bailey ran a wildfire simulation for suburbs that have never identified as fire country. Four Central Texas departments now use AI-driven monitoring to model flame spread through a landscape of grasslands, wooded corridors, and new subdivisions filling in behind the tree line. Bailey can see where the risk concentrates. He's still figuring out what a fire department does once its mission expands beyond fighting fire into convincing people they live somewhere fire can reach.

Two climate researchers walk through six years of compounding losses: $23.6 billion in agricultural damage, record-low reservoirs, cattle herds that never rebuilt before the next drought hit. The most authoritative single read on how this crisis accumulated.

County by county, aquifer by aquifer, burn ban by burn ban. The federal dashboard tracking a crisis in real time, updated with current maps, forecast outlooks, and fire impact data from the Ranger Road Fire, the largest U.S. wildfire of 2026.

The people responsible for fighting Texas wildfires wrote this assessment, and they are plainly worried. Fires igniting under Southern Plains Wildfire Outbreak conditions represent just 3% of reported wildfires but have burned 49% of total acres since 2005.

Reported in 2022, this Yale E360 investigation follows families who made the decision to leave and then had to live with it. The data has evolved since, but the emotional core, the discovery that leaving doesn't end the loss, hasn't aged a day.

The February 2026 companion to the Forest Service's wildfire outlook, with updated response numbers: 249 wildfires and 5,528 acres burned statewide since January 1. Spring fire season is just beginning.
