# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 23 — Future Tense

Imagining plausible climate-changed futures to illuminate choices we face today

### The Sleepless Night

- [Heat Debt](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/23/futures/article/11053/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-03-10 · Format: The Sleepless Night

A cooling mat rated for six hours never lasts six. A pillowcase from the freezer holds its cold for forty-five seconds against skin. A woman stands in her kitchen at 3 AM, damp from a shower she's learned to calibrate precisely — not cold, never cold — and cannot remember what she came in here for. Her phone tracks a number in amber and red that climbs from May and never fully resets before the next May starts it climbing again. She is functioning. The bed where her husband was is dry and cool.

### The Changed Baseline

- [Normal Range](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/23/futures/article/11054/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-03-10 · Format: The Changed Baseline

A seven-year-old squeezes a dynamometer in a Houston clinic. Eighteenth percentile. Within normal range. Three years ago, the reference curves were redrawn to accommodate what a committee called contemporary activity patterns. The new curves run lower. They have to. You can't flag sixty percent of your patients.

### The Deep Clocks

- [The Body Keeps the Wrong Time](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/23/futures/article/11055/markdown>) — Published 2026-03-10

*Dr. Margit Zeitler is a chronobiologist and professor of integrative physiology at Arizona State University, where she directs the Temporal Ecology and Human Rhythms Lab. She arrived in Phoenix in 2019 to study thermoregulatory behavior in desert reptiles and, within three years, had pivoted entirely to human subjects, a shift she describes, with characteristic understatement, as "following the more alarming data." For the past six years, she has been building one of the largest longitudinal datasets on climate-driven circadian disruption in a heat-exposed urban population, tracking sleep architecture, hormonal rhythmicity, and mood cycling in a cohort of 11,000 Maricopa County residents. She also wears a research-grade actigraph on her own wrist and has not missed a night of personal sleep data collection since 2021. We spoke in her office, where the blinds were drawn against a March afternoon that had already reached 98°F.*

### The Atmospheric Log

- [Training Log, Front Range, Colorado, June–September 2033](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/23/futures/article/11056/markdown>) — Published 2026-03-10

Jun 4. Out 4:32a. AQI 48 / UV 0 / HI 71F / tree pollen 4,100. Elm corridor for canopy. Cetirizine at 0400. 6.2 mi, 8:24, HR 152. Good day.

Wearable data from millions of sleepers shows warming nights are quietly degrading sleep architecture, with the sharpest losses falling along lines of age, income, and geography. The body keeps a record of warming that no one asked it to.

Tens of thousands of annual deaths from chronic smoke exposure get recorded as heart attacks, strokes, dementia. The death certificates never mention wildfire. A body count hidden inside other diagnoses.

After the LA fires, researchers found homes off-gassing toxic compounds weeks after the air outside cleared. The walls remember the smoke. So do the lungs of anyone living inside them.

A rapid review finds that "eco-anxiety" flattens a far more complex emotional landscape in young people: grief, moral betrayal, paralysis, and a loneliness that comes from knowing things the adults around them won't discuss.

Farmworkers and construction crews absorb compounding wildfire smoke exposure season after season with no real option to shelter. The standard public health advice, stay indoors, assumes a life most of them don't have.
