# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 25 — Future Tense

Imagining plausible climate-changed futures to illuminate choices we face today

### The Unmediated

- [Paw Burn Season](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/25/futures/article/11963/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-03-25 · Format: The Unmediated

At ninety degrees air temperature, asphalt hits 140. At 140, a dog's paw pads burn in under a minute. A veterinarian in Austin knows these numbers the way she knows her own phone number.

### The Confused Calendar

- [Sugar Water](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/25/futures/article/11964/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-03-25 · Format: The Confused Calendar

February, and the hives are humming. In Vermont's Addison County, 2031, a beekeeper drives out before dawn with a warm bucket of sugar syrup on the passenger seat. Her colonies have broken winter cluster weeks ahead of schedule, the queens already laying, foragers lifting into gray light. Their bodies are doing exactly what warming air tells them to do. Nothing is blooming.

### What Survives

- [She Grows Coral in a Parking Lot and Calls It the Future](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/25/futures/article/11965/markdown>) — Published 2026-03-25

*Pilar Aguayo is a fictional marine biologist, invented for this column because the real people doing this work are too busy keeping things alive to sit for long interviews. But her world is built from theirs: the science is real, the losses are documented, and the questions she can't answer are the ones actual practitioners carry around every day. We made her up. We didn't make up the reef.*
