# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 26 — Future Tense

Imagining plausible climate-changed futures to illuminate choices we face today

### The Disclaimer

- [Disclaim](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/26/futures/article/12343/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-04-01 · Format: The Disclaimer

Four houses dark out of seven on his street. No cars in those driveways. No curtains in the windows. Her father lived here thirty-one years, painted over the flood lines, paid the insurance when it doubled and doubled again. Made his bed the morning he went to the hospital and didn't come back. Now a lawyer is saying she has nine months to irrevocably disclaim all right, title, and interest. She walks through the house room by room, hands at her sides, the salt smell getting stronger down the hall.

### The Lesson

- [What the Grass Knows](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/26/futures/article/12344/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-04-01 · Format: The Lesson

A cupped palm held under a spring weir, counting seconds. His father taught him this measure — how long the water takes to fill the hand tells you what the land can carry. His father counted in August, the annual low. This is July.

### The Inheritor

- [Mika Reyes Is Not Living Through Anything in Particular](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/26/futures/article/12345/markdown>) — Published 2026-04-01

*Mika Reyes is fourteen years old and lives in Tempe, Arizona. She was born in September 2018, which means she exists right now, in your world, as a seven-year-old. We spoke over video call on a Tuesday night in July 2032, 10:15 PM her time, which she assured me was "not even late." She was eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Behind her, a window showed a neighborhood lit amber by streetlights, the sky still holding a faint orange band at the horizon. Her dog, Bean, a small and judgmental-looking mutt, slept on her bed. Mika runs the 400-meter for her school's indoor track team, gets mostly A's, and has opinions about which electrolyte brand is overrated. She does not think of herself as living through anything in particular.*

### The Annotation

- [Summer Garden Salad](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/26/futures/article/12346/markdown>) — Published 2026-04-01

Good tomatoes, Brandywine, cut thick. Fresh basil torn not chopped. Cucumber off the vine, thin. Dill. Red onion sliced so thin you can see through it. Good oil, good vinegar, salt. Make it in August when everything comes in at once.
