# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 27 — Future Tense

Imagining plausible climate-changed futures to illuminate choices we face today

### The Planting Decision

- [Dust It In](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/27/futures/article/12652/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-04-07 · Format: The Planting Decision

She squeezed the soil sample in her fist and it held shape for a second, then fell apart. Six hundred and forty acres waiting on that. On the kitchen table: her dead grandmother's weather notebook, a hedged PDF from a former government climatologist now working out of his house in Norman, and a WhatsApp thread where forty-seven neighbors were all guessing. The planting window was closing. The drill was fueled and parked sixty yards from the porch.

### The Google Doc

- [The Spreadsheet](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/27/futures/article/12653/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-04-07 · Format: The Google Doc

Eighty-one degrees at 2 AM. The floor vents exhale salt and rot. A couple in coastal North Carolina has found a Google Doc — 1,247 rows of flood observations kept by a retired marine biologist since 2027. Dates, water levels, terse neighbor annotations. Some of the early names stop appearing by 2031. The FEMA map says their street is minimal risk. Row 1,198 says 18.3 inches on a sunny day. Between them on the bed: a laptop, a mortgage calculator, and two numbers. One to stay, one to leave. They can't afford either.

### The Volunteer Network

- [The Woman Who Refused to Be the Next Gap in the Record](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/27/futures/article/12654/markdown>) — Published 2026-04-07

*This conversation was recorded in April 2034 at a kitchen table in East Asheville, North Carolina, eight years after the National Centers for Environmental Information lost its federal funding. NCEI was once the largest archive of weather and climate data on Earth. Constance "Connie" Whetstone, 64, spent twenty-six years there as a quality control specialist. She now coordinates the Southern Appalachian Weather Cooperative, a volunteer network of 412 amateur weather stations, retired meteorologists, and hobbyists maintaining a regional climate record across western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. On the table between us: a mug of coffee, a Davis Instruments rain gauge with a cracked funnel, and a spiral-bound notebook filled with station visit logs. The air smelled like the loquat tree outside her window, a species that, she noted without emphasis, did not fruit in Asheville when she moved here in 2003.*

### The Forecast

- [Your Extended Outlook, October 11, 2033](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/27/futures/article/12655/markdown>) — Published 2026-04-07

Good evening. Airport temperature is 97. Our rooftop sensor has 101. We're going with the airport number for continuity.
