# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 29 — Future Tense

Imagining plausible climate-changed futures to illuminate choices we face today

### The Day Of

- [The Day-Of Coordinator](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/29/futures/article/13461/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-04-21 · Format: The Day Of

At 3:47 on a Saturday in Scottsdale, the air quality index reads 147 and a woman reapplies sunscreen without looking at the tube. She repositions a misting station so it catches the ceremony aisle without dampening the silk runner. The orchids are holding. The dahlias the bride originally wanted would be paste by now. She has a generator at 43 of its 60 kilowatts, a 14-minute ceremony rehearsed twice, 146 signed liability waivers, and an EMT behind the catering tent with a cooler of ice and IV supplies. The wedding is in three hours.

### The Session

- [The Knowing](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/29/futures/article/13462/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-04-21 · Format: The Session

The light through the blinds is amber at an hour when it shouldn't be. A couples therapist sits across from two people whose marriage has become a series of decisions nobody can finish. Stay or go. Sell or hold. Whether to bring a child into a world they won't name aloud. She identified their pattern in the first five minutes. Pursue-withdraw. The clinical term is precise and it changes nothing.

### The Record

- [Gil Pepperday Keeps the Coolers Running](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/29/futures/article/13463/markdown>) — Published 2026-04-21

*Gil Pepperday is the operations manager and co-owner of Pepperday & Sons Mortuary Services, which has served the East Valley of metropolitan Phoenix since 1974. His grandfather founded the business; his father expanded it; Gil has, by his own description, "mostly just kept the coolers running." We spoke in his office on a Tuesday morning in late September 2029, during what he called "the back nine of the season." The air conditioning was set to 68. He offered me water twice before I sat down. He did not offer coffee.*

### The Checklist

- [Outdoor Summer Ceremony Preparation Checklist — Bexar County, TX (Rev. 04/2031)](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/29/futures/article/13464/markdown>) — Published 2026-04-21

Permit holder must complete all items no fewer than 72 hours prior to ceremony start time. Incomplete submissions will delay event clearance. Items marked with an asterisk (*) were added per Bexar County Ordinance 2029-14 and are not optional.

### Present Tense

- **Where Rising Climate Risks and Insurance Costs Will Hit Hardest** — [Source](<https://www.brookings.edu/articles/where-rising-climate-risks-and-insurance-costs-will-hit-hardest/>) — Published 2026-04-21

Brookings maps climate risk and insurance costs at the ZIP-code level, revealing that the communities least able to absorb rising premiums are the ones already most exposed. The gap between who can afford to adapt and who gets priced out is widening faster than the models predicted.

- **Heat, Drought and Wildfire Shatter Records in the West** — [Source](<https://www.eenews.net/articles/heat-drought-and-wildfire-shatter-records-in-the-west/>) — Published 2026-04-21

March 2026 brought heat to the American West that collapsed snowpack and rewrote fire outlooks months ahead of schedule. The scientists who built the projections were stunned by how closely reality tracked their worst-case scenarios, and how early it arrived.

- **Women's Well-Being and Everyday Adaptation to Heat** — [Source](<https://wires.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/wcc.70055>) — Published 2026-04-21

This peer-reviewed study documents what temperature records miss: the quiet daily labor of rescheduling errands, rearranging rooms, and restructuring caregiving around heat that keeps getting worse. The adaptation is constant, invisible, and falls disproportionately on women.

- **More Than Eco-Anxiety: Study Exposes Emotional Fallout of Climate Crisis for Youth** — [Source](<https://medicalxpress.com/news/2026-02-eco-anxiety-exposes-emotional-fallout.html>) — Published 2026-04-21

Researchers found that children and adolescents carry a wider range of climate emotions than "eco-anxiety" captures: grief, betrayal, paralysis, and forms of distress the existing vocabulary can't quite hold. The study suggests we've been underreading what young people feel by giving it too simple a name.

- **The Race- and Place-Based Factors Influencing Homeowners Insurance in the Climate Change Era** — [Source](<https://www.brookings.edu/articles/the-race-and-place-based-factors-influencing-homeowners-insurance-in-the-climate-change-era/>) — Published 2026-04-21

Brookings traces how infrastructure investments meant to protect cities from flooding often redirect the water into lower-income neighborhoods nearby. The insurance market then prices those neighborhoods as riskier, compounding a disparity the infrastructure itself created.
