# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 31 — Future Tense

Imagining plausible climate-changed futures to illuminate choices we face today

### What She Kept

- [Letter to Be Opened at Eighteen](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/31/futures/article/14877/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-05-06 · Format: What She Kept

The water came out of the ground at sixty-eight degrees. July in the Hill Country was a hundred and five, and you fell into that river and your whole chest seized and then released and you weren't thinking about anything at all. Nobody checked anything first. You just went.

### Still Water

- [Cast](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/31/futures/article/14888/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-05-06 · Format: Still Water

A man sits on a boulder that should be underwater and ties a fly to tippet. Four seconds. The knot is three generations old. Below him, the river runs in a single thread down the center of exposed cobble, pale and chalky where it should be dark with algae. He has brought his son here to teach him to read current, to mend line, to place a caddis on the seam where fast water meets slow. His hands remember everything. The water they remember is gone.

### What Used to Be

- [Renée Lefort Only Says "Was"](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/31/futures/article/14889/markdown>) — Published 2026-05-06

*This interview takes place in 2031, in a classroom that doesn't exist yet, with a teacher who hasn't been born into her role. Everything in it is invented. Almost nothing in it is made up.*

- [Coral Reef — from The Illustrated Young Explorer's Guide to Nature, 2035 Edition](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/31/futures/article/14890/markdown>) — Published 2026-05-06

Coral reefs are sometimes called "the rainforests of the sea!" These colorful underwater structures are built by tiny animals called coral polyps, which live together with even tinier algae called zooxanthellae (say: ZOH-uh-zan-THEL-ee). The algae give corals their beautiful colors and most of their food through photosynthesis. Talk about teamwork!

### What They'll Inherit

- **Rethinking Climate Migration: Fiji Families Plan Generational Retreat to Higher Ground** — [Source](<https://environment.yale.edu/news/article/rethinking-climate-migration>) — Published 2026-05-06

Yale researchers found that Fijian parents aren't fleeing rising seas. They're staying put and preparing their children to be the ones who leave, building on higher ground their parents chose for them. The study calls this "tethered resilience," a term that holds both the love and the weight of planning your own obsolescence so your kids survive.

- **Climate Anxiety in Wildfire Country May Be Adaptive, Not Pathological** — [Source](<https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1812351/full>) — Published 2026-05-06

This Frontiers in Psychology editorial examines families in fire-prone communities and finds that parental anxiety often functions as a transmission mechanism for preparedness. The fear passes down, but so does the knowledge of what to grab, when to leave, how to read the sky. Worth reading alongside the Camp Mystic piece below, where the line between adaptive fear and lasting damage gets harder to locate.

- **Global Population Facing Extreme Heat Will Double by 2050** — [Source](<https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2026-01-26-global-population-living-extreme-heat-double-2050>) — Published 2026-05-06

Oxford researchers, publishing in Nature Sustainability, project that the number of people living with dangerous heat will double within twenty-five years. A child born this spring will grow up in a world where 41% of all humans contend with temperatures their parents experienced only in anomalous years. The study is dense with data, but the core finding is simple and irreversible.

- **NOAA Ends the Disaster Database That Tracked Billion-Dollar Climate Events Since 1980** — [Source](<https://www.cnn.com/2025/05/08/climate/noaa-ends-disaster-database>) — Published 2026-05-06

NOAA has discontinued its billion-dollar disaster tracking database, the only continuous federal record of climate catastrophes dating back forty-four years. The next generation will face worse disasters with less institutional memory of what came before. You can't learn from a record that no longer exists.

- **Inside the Shattered Sisterhood of Camp Mystic** — [Source](<https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/inside-shattered-sisterhood-of-camp-mystic/>) — Published 2026-05-06

Texas Monthly's reporting on the Camp Mystic flood aftermath focuses on what the girls carry now: flinching at helicopter rotors, freezing during thunderstorms, the guilt of having survived when others didn't. The community fracture over whether the camp should reopen mirrors a question playing out everywhere. What do you do with a place your children loved that became the thing that broke them?
