# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 31 — The Lab

Experimental content exploring innovative ways to illuminate our climate-changed world

### The Particle

- [Inhalation](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/31/lab/article/14749/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-05-05 · Format: The Particle

When a house burns alongside a forest, the smoke is different. PVC siding cracks into dioxins. Couch foam becomes hydrogen cyanide. A pressure-treated deck releases arsenic in its most toxic form. The emission factors run a hundred thousand times higher than wildland fire. All of it rides upward on carbon particles smaller than a red blood cell, and the particles don't settle. They travel.

- [Inhalation](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/31/lab/article/14750/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-05-05 · Format: The Particle

PVC siding holds until 250 degrees Celsius. Above that, chlorine atoms detach as hydrogen chloride gas and the carbon backbone collapses into fragments carrying compounds that existed in no material in the house. A burning forest yields none of them. The barrier between the air in your lungs and the blood in your capillaries is two tenths of a micrometer thick. Thinner than the wavelength of visible light. What crosses it arrives in your bloodstream within sixty seconds, and your body has no way to distinguish what it needs from what it got.

### The Ritual

- [The Number](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/31/lab/article/14751/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-05-05 · Format: The Ritual

The first thing I do is check a number on my phone. Before coffee, before the kids are up. A colored dot tells me whether my daughter can go outside. Whether I run. Whether we open the windows or tape a furnace filter to a box fan and listen to it work all day.

### The Organ

- [The Right Lung Would Like to Submit Its Testimony for the Record](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/31/lab/article/14752/markdown>) — Published 2026-05-05

*The following conversation was conducted in a clinical setting we are not at liberty to describe, with an organ we are not at liberty to name beyond its anatomical designation. The Right Lung — the three-lobed side, responsible for approximately 55% of total gas exchange — agreed to speak on the record for the first time. It asked that we not photograph it. It asked that we not call what is happening to it a metaphor.*

### The Receipt

- [Your Receipt: $11.20 Per Ton of CO2 Emitted (Wildfire Smoke Mortality, U.S. Only)](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/31/lab/article/14753/markdown>) — Published 2026-05-06

ITEM: Premature death via PM2.5 inhalation, contiguous United States, projected 2020–2100. Quantity: 64,000 annually at 3°C warming. Unit price: value of statistical life. SUBTOTAL: $11.20/ton CO2. Applied to existing social cost of carbon, this represents a 74% surcharge.

### The Expansion

Six findings from early 2026. Six different research teams measuring six different things: hours, cancers, deaths, chemistry, elevation, dollars. None were coordinating. They all found the same thing.

Below is a dashboard. One number per card, one source, one sentence. We built it this way because smoke no longer fits inside a narrative. It is expanding along every axis anyone knows how to measure, all at once, faster than the last time anyone checked.

The constraint is the point. A paragraph would let you look away. A dashboard won't. Read top to bottom. Every dial is turning the same direction.

Tag: Burning Hours

Nights are warming faster than days, breaking the diurnal off-switch that once let wildfires rest; North American potential burning hours rose 36% between 1975 and 2024.

In a 91,460-person trial presented April 2026, three years of population-level wildfire smoke exposure registered across lung, colorectal, breast, bladder, and blood cancers. Not yet peer-reviewed.

Tag: Projected Deaths

At 3°C of warming, smoke kills an estimated 64,000 Americans annually, 60% above 2011–2020 levels, a projection that already accounts for the fact that burned forests can't burn twice.

- **When Houses Burn the Chemistry Changes Completely** — [Source](<https://www.epa.gov/air-research/wildland-fire-research-whats-smoke>) — Published 2026-05-06

Tag: Structure Smoke

Wildland-urban interface fires consume insulation, PVC pipe, vinyl flooring, and vehicle batteries, producing toxic organic compounds at emission factors 5 to 2,500 times higher than wildland-only burns.

European mountain forest fires have pushed upward roughly 72 meters per decade, accelerating sharply since 2015, reaching alpine ecosystems that evolved without fire and possess no established recovery pathway.

Each additional ton of CO₂ emitted generates $11.20 in U.S. smoke-related mortality damage, raising the domestic social cost of carbon by 74%, because the old number never included smoke at all.
