# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 32 — Future Tense

Imagining plausible climate-changed futures to illuminate choices we face today

### The Fresh Start

- [The Morning](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/32/futures/article/16026/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-05-13 · Format: The Fresh Start

The relocation is finished. The funding was spent, the school built, the village moved to higher ground. The door frame warps a little deeper each month. Set in a small Alaska Native community circa 2029, this story follows one woman through a single morning: rust-colored water from a coughing faucet, enough for faces but not hair, a walk to school along a gravel road where children carry buckets and no one looks at them. Three generations in a house that was supposed to be the answer.

### The Safer Place

- [The Yard She Chose](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/32/futures/article/16027/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-05-13 · Format: The Safer Place

She made a spreadsheet before they moved north. Elevation, flood risk, projected temperature bands through 2060. Now she hosts Thursday dinners in the yard she chose, grilling local walleye under a haze that drifted down from Ontario. The neighbors she followed here are talking about the new brewery. Nobody mentions the lake temperature.

### The Facilitator

- [She'd Do It Again, Not the Same Way](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/32/futures/article/16028/markdown>) — Published 2026-05-13

*The Futures section presents speculative fiction. Margaux "Go" Godbout is an imagined character. The federal programs, documented failures, and institutional patterns she describes are real.*

America spent $150 million relocating one Alaska Native village to higher ground. The new site's infrastructure is already failing. If second displacement has a ground zero, Mertarvik is it.

Federal disaster programs were built to write checks to individuals, not to move whole communities. This report maps the governance vacuum that every relocation attempt falls into.

Insurance follows risk, not people. As carriers pull out of climate-exposed markets, the financial math of staying collapses — and moving somewhere insurable gets more expensive by the quarter.
