# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 37 — Future Tense

Imagining plausible climate-changed futures to illuminate choices we face today

### The Cooling Hierarchy

- [Tier Three](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/37/futures/article/23153/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-06-17 · Format: The Cooling Hierarchy

Every evening Elena checks the app, checks her mother's skin for sweat that won't come because the medications have turned that system down, checks the battery percentage, and does the math. Thirty-eight cents a kilowatt-hour until eight. Twenty-two until eleven. Her mother's window unit runs regardless. Her seventeen-year-old son stopped mentioning the heat about a year ago. There's no blackout here, no emergency — just a Tuesday in the mid-2030s, a house that hasn't truly cooled since morning, and a thermostat dial someone keeps quietly turning up when she's not in the room.

### The Managed Body

- [Shift](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/37/futures/article/23158/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-06-17 · Format: The Managed Body

The parking lot gives back its heat through her boot soles before she's crossed the first row of cars. Inside, half a million square feet of racked freight, fans turning overhead, air that will shift over the next few hours in ways no one announces but her body has learned to read. A night-shift warehouse picker in Dallas carries two water bottles, knows which aisles run warm, and registers the moment cooling stops arriving. A Thursday before Juneteenth. Fewer people, same freight.

### After Dark

- [The Woman Who Runs Phoenix Parks After Dark](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/37/futures/article/23167/markdown>) — Published 2026-06-17

*It is 9:15 PM at South Mountain Park and the parking lot is nearly full. A family unpacks a cooler from their trunk. Two women in reflective vests stretch near the trailhead. A man walks a dog past a sign that reads* ***PARK HOURS: 5 PM – 1 AM (JUNE – SEPT).*** *The digital board at the visitor center reads 104°F.*

### The Document

- [Outdoor Athletics Atmospheric Compliance Standards](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/37/futures/article/23168/markdown>) — By [Wren Castellano](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/73/markdown>) · Published 2026-06-17

Pursuant to Bylaw 12.7.3 (revised August 2033), the following provisions apply to all outdoor athletic activities under District jurisdiction, effective 2033–34.

### The Evening Hour

- **Texas Grid Braces for Record Summer Demand** — [Source](<https://www.axios.com/local/houston/2026/06/12/texas-power-grid-summer-demand-ercot-forecast>) — Published 2026-06-17

ERCOT's 92,200 MW peak forecast puts the sharpest risk in the evening hours, when solar generation drops and millions of air conditioners keep running.

- **Extreme Heat Is Making Life Increasingly Unlivable** — [Source](<https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/international/2026/03/12/861522.htm>) — Published 2026-06-17

The first study to measure heat's toll not in deaths but in vanished hours of ordinary activity — US seniors alone lose 270 usable hours a year, time that simply disappears from the day.

- **From Tail Risk to Design Baseline: How the Grid Is Adapting to Extreme Heat** — [Source](<https://www.powermag.com/from-tail-risk-to-design-baseline-how-the-grid-is-adapting-to-extreme-heat/>) — Published 2026-06-17

Grid operators are quietly abandoning the assumption that extreme heat is an anomaly and engineering around it as the permanent condition. The institutional language is catching up to what the thermometer already said.

Districts pushing start dates later, dismissing kids early, canceling recess — 36,000 schools still lack adequate HVAC, so the schedule bends where the building can't.

- **As Climate Change Threatens Student Athlete Safety, States Try to Adapt** — [Source](<https://www.civilbeat.org/2026/04/as-climate-change-threatens-student-athlete-safety-states-try-to-adapt/>) — Published 2026-06-17

One school district has cold-water immersion tubs on the sideline; the next town over has a garden hose. The gap between those two responses is where heat adaptation quietly reproduces the inequalities it finds.

- **How Extreme Heat Is Changing Our Habits and Lifestyles** — [Source](<https://www.weforum.org/stories/2025/03/extreme-heat-impacts-behaviour/>) — Published 2026-06-17

Farmworkers shifting to night harvests, walking groups relocating to air-conditioned malls, families retreating indoors by late morning. Heat doesn't just take hours away; it reorganizes which hours count as livable.

They left Houston after the flood and drove north to Duluth for Lake Superior, the cooler summers, the freshwater. Three years later, their basement wall is weeping groundwater through a crack the frost heave opened. The sump pump cycles on and off all day. The lead pipe replacement is scheduled for 2034. The neighbor's drainage runs toward their foundation. The rain falls on frozen ground that won't absorb it. A short story about the water you moved toward arriving through every wrong seam.

Her mother's water rights were worth more than the house and the land combined. The aquifer has maybe fifteen years of irrigation left. Her nephew wants to keep farming. Selling requires two signatures and a stack of forms. Not selling requires nothing at all.

- [Break Room](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/37/futures/article/18418/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-06-03 · Format: The Break

A mandatory heat break in a western Kansas meatpacking plant. Fourteen minutes on the clock. Workers from the kill floor and the cold side sit together, cooling unevenly, talking about nothing in particular — a neighbor's dry well, a pulled irrigation pivot, the taste of electrolyte packets. Outside, it's 112 degrees. The aquifer beneath the town is dropping. The timer counts down.

A state representative brings a projector, a timeline, and manila folders to a parish meeting room. Twenty-three people sit in sixty chairs. The buyout form has lines for homeowners, landlords, and tenants. The shrimp boat, the cemetery, and the question nobody was going to put on the agenda go somewhere else.
