# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

Experimental content exploring innovative ways to illuminate our climate-changed world

### Form Breaks Under Pressure

- [Installation Log: Tide Gauge FUN-001](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/4/lab/article/4057/markdown>) — By [Dr. Elena Rodriguez](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/17/markdown>) · Published 2025-10-31 · Format: Climate Structural Experiments

My mother used to check tide tables the way other people check weather—she understood that what's coming is both predictable and completely unstoppable. Been thinking about that while working on this piece about a tide gauge in Tuvalu. It's been measuring the same thing for thirty-two years: water rising and falling, except the falling part keeps getting higher. The instrument was designed to track cycles but it's actually recording something ending. Three thousand years of navigation knowledge stops working when the ocean isn't where your charts say it should be.

### Interview Collapses Mid-Question

- [An Interview with the Largest Single-Year Atmospheric Carbon Increase in Human History](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/4/lab/article/4031/markdown>) — Published 2025-10-31

In October 2025, the World Meteorological Organization announced that atmospheric carbon dioxide had increased by 3.5 parts per million between 2023 and 2024. The largest single-year jump since measurements began in 1957. [source 1](<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_in_climate_change>) Not just a data point. A threshold. An acceleration that climate scientists had warned about but hoped wouldn't arrive so soon.

### Climate Infects Every Genre

- **Great Barrier Reef (1998-2025): One Star** — [Source](<https://www.barrierreef.org/the-reef/threats/coral-bleaching>) — Published 2025-10-31

Tag: Product Review

Bought this for my kids. Advertised as "vibrant" and "biodiverse." Six bleaching events since 2016. 95% of the Acropora colonies just gone. The 2024-25 back-to-back bleaching makes it clear this is a manufacturing defect, not user error. Tried everything. Product will not maintain color. Do not buy.

Witness four months of rainfall in a single weekend. This atmospheric river experience spans 1,000 miles: Arkansas cypress swamps at dawn, Kentucky bluegrass under six feet of water by noon, Ohio farmland converting to lake by evening. Your 46 million neighbors are already here. Waders required. All sales final.

Stunning acreage newly available May 2025. Previous forest cover removed for your convenience. Fire treatment completed on over half the property. Rainfall declining 21mm per year means fewer weather delays on construction. Temperature trending up. Deforestation in the region up 92% from last year, so inventory moving fast.

First of my kind in twelve years. 210 mph winds. I touched down in North Dakota and people noticed. When I commit, I commit completely. No games. No half measures. I'm looking for someone who understands that intensity isn't a red flag, it's honesty. I will change your landscape. That's not a threat.

Over one million hectares by August. The most ambitious menu I've encountered. Aggressive, unrestrained, the chef clearly working without supervision. Flavors overwhelm. The smoke alone fills the room. Portions are absurd. You cannot finish this. The other diners look sick. I watched the kitchen burn for hours. Remarkable in the worst sense.

Died July 2025 after prolonged heat stress. Survived by scattered heat-resistant polyps and researchers who measured the decline. Preceded in death by 44% of bleached colonies, 95% of Acropora genus. Born in warmer times. Died in warmer times. The family requests that in lieu of flowers you reduce your carbon emissions immediately.

- **Atmospheric Rivers Should Consider Pivoting East** — [Source](<https://insideclimatenews.org/news/09082025/atmospheric-rivers-move-east/>) — Published 2025-10-31

West Coast positions declining 4% per decade since 1980. Portland rainfall down two millimeters annually. Meanwhile Southeast markets show 100% growth in precipitation over twenty years. Smart atmospheric rivers are already relocating. The East Coast offers untapped flooding potential, fresh infrastructure to damage, and a population unprepared for your skill set. Time to update your resume.

### Wrong Format, Right Horror

- [Warranty Claim M-2025-1029-JAM: Infrastructure Failure Under Storm Conditions](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/4/lab/article/4039/markdown>) — Published 2025-10-31

CLAIMANT: Government of Jamaica
PRODUCT: Coastal/Interior Infrastructure (residential, medical, transportation)
DATE OF FAILURE: October 29, 2025
CAUSE OF FAILURE: Hurricane Melissa (185 mph sustained winds, 901 mb central pressure)

### Forms Corrupted by Reality

- **Sticky Note on Refrigerator Door** — [Source](<https://laist.com/news/la-county-alert-prepare-evacuation>) — Published 2025-10-31

Pack go-bags tonight—just in case. The ink bleeds downward through yellow paper. Different handwriting appears below, heavier pressure: 4pm alert was false. 4am alert was false. This one. Paper curls brown at edges. Adhesive turns to ash. The note peels itself away from metal.

When did the paper start smelling like smoke? Before or after the third countywide alert went out?

Why does handwriting change pressure mid-note? Different person writing or same person no longer believing their own words?

- **Re: Hill Country Flood Status** — [Source](<https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-matters/billion-dollar-disasters-2025>) — Published 2025-10-31

Subject line flickers: URGENT URGENT URGENT. Roads are clear, you can return. Auto-signature corrupts mid-send: Sent from my iPhone underwater. Reply-all generates 120 bouncebacks. Each undeliverable message names someone still unaccounted for. Error 404: recipient not found. Mailbox full. Mailbox full. Mailbox full forever.

What happens when email servers process mass casualty as away-message? Protocol has no variable for permanent absence.

How long do auto-replies run on drowned servers? Central Texas infrastructure still generating automated responses from flooded data centers.

- **Climate Consulting LLC Business Card** — [Source](<https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2025/6/24/heatwave-poses-risks-to-us-power-grid>) — Published 2025-10-31

Embossed cardstock, thermochromic ink. Phone number fades at 95°F. Email disappears at 102°F. Physical address gone at 108°F. At 113°F only the tagline remains, now illegible: Adapting to Tomorrow's Climate Today. Laminate bubbles. Card warps in wallet. Tomorrow arrived three hours ago.

What temperature does permanence fail? Cardstock rated for pocket heat can't survive Spain's 45°C or 2,305 European deaths.

When do phone numbers become temporary? Heat-damaged infrastructure makes contact information conditional, addresses provisional, consultation appointments impossible to schedule.

- **Text Thread 3:47 PM** — [Source](<https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/extreme-heat-causing-power-outages/>) — Published 2025-10-31

Are you safe? Mom please respond. I'm calling. Gray text beneath each: Not delivered. Screen shows full signal bars. Another message appears, sender unknown: Our cell phones don't work in the apartment. Then: 1,500 without power. Towers overheating. Safety issue. Full battery. Full bars. Zero connection.

Why do phones show full signal when towers are melting? Grid fails before power does, communication before electricity.

What good is charged battery with dead network? Extreme heat strains infrastructure and towers simultaneously, creating illusion of connectivity.
