# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 41 — Future Tense

Imagining plausible climate-changed futures to illuminate choices we face today

### The Underline Series

- [Ghost-Feet](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/41/futures/article/31305/markdown>) — By [Wren Castellano](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/73/markdown>) · Published 2026-07-16 · Format: The Underline Series — Weekly Chapter

The operating notice says the river is adequate. Eighty-seven thousand cubic feet per second, every threshold met, every protocol satisfied. The fish are dying anyway — the compact measures volume and the fish live in temperature, and nobody built a field for that. In Chapter 4 of The Underline Series, the basin's numbers authorize one thing and the river needs another on the same morning, and the data that could close the gap will make visible the one cold-water refuge that survived precisely because no one with a spreadsheet knew it was there.

### The Correct Amount

- [The Claim](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/41/futures/article/31304/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-07-16 · Format: The Correct Amount

A FAIR Plan adjuster drives out to a burned lot in Malibu, measures what's left, and builds an estimate. Every line item checks out. Every coverage limit follows from the policy language. The broker picked a number that was probably adequate in 2033. The per-square-foot cost did what it did. Set in the late 2030s, the weight is the arithmetic after the fire, where nobody committed fraud and nobody acted in bad faith and a system of reasonable adjustments compounded in a market that only moved one direction.

### A Good Day

- [A Good Day](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/41/futures/article/31306/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-07-16 · Format: A Good Day

A grandmother's knees find four-thirty before her alarm does. She measures sorghum flour by feel, timing the oven to finish before the rates shift. By six she's crossing Prescott Street toward the Whitehaven market with her daughter and granddaughter, buying field peas and small fragrant peaches while the shade structures still hold. Nothing fails. The grid hums. The water runs cold from the tap. The cobbler tastes the way it's supposed to taste, after nine years of her wrists learning new proportions. In this new short story, a multigenerational family in mid-century Memphis moves through an ordinary summer Saturday, and the reader registers how much has changed by how little anyone mentions it.

### The Dashboard Builder

- [She Built Your Climate Dashboard. She Has Notes.](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/41/futures/article/31303/markdown>) — Published 2026-07-16

*This interview takes place in 2043. Kit Tamura-Bosch, her tool, and this conversation are speculative fiction — which, for a piece about the gap between what a screen shows you and what's actually happening, feels appropriate.*

### Select One

- [If None Apply, Skip This Question](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/41/futures/article/31302/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-07-16

The screen asks: *As a result of this disaster, do you need assistance in any of the following categories?*

### The Measurement Gap

- **Maricopa County 2025 Heat-Related Deaths Report** — [Source](<https://www.maricopa.gov/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/6510>) — Published 2026-07-16

Nearly half of 430 heat deaths occurred on days rated "moderate" risk. Among indoor deaths, 94% had an AC unit present, 72% of those units nonfunctioning. The system counts risk level and AC presence; neither captures whether a person can actually stay cool.

- **U.S. Treasury Homeowners Insurance Climate-Risk Data Report (2018–2022)** — [Source](<https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy2791>) — Published 2026-07-16

Premiums rose 8.7% faster than inflation; nonrenewal rates ran 80% higher in the riskiest ZIP codes. "Policy in force" is the unit regulators track, but it says nothing about whether the coverage a household holds could actually pay for what happens next.

- **Parsons et al., "Intensifying Global Heat Threatens Livability for Younger and Older Adults" (Environmental Research: Health, 2026)** — [Source](<https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/2752-5309/ae3c3a>) — Published 2026-07-16

Shifts the relevant measure from survivable temperature to sustainable physical activity, differentiated by age. Older adults already face roughly 50% more life-limiting heat hours than their mid-century counterparts, a gap invisible in standard heat metrics.

- **WECC 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment** — [Source](<https://feature.wecc.org/2026-sra/index.html>) — Published 2026-07-16

Annual generation capacity across the Northwest reads as adequate, but the assessment flags elevated shortfall risk in August and September, when early snowmelt has already drawn down hydro reserves. The critical hour hides inside the annual megawatt-hour.

- **Washington State Climate Office, "Climate Matters: Mountain Snowpack and Streamflow" (March 2026)** — [Source](<https://climate.uw.edu/2026/03/09/climate-matters-mountain-snowpack-and-streamflow/>) — Published 2026-07-16

Statewide snowpack ranked third-lowest since 1985, but water shortages arrive river by river and week by week. The statewide percentage flattens which basin runs dry and when.

- **LA County Recovers: Debris Removal** — [Source](<https://recovery.lacounty.gov/debris-removal/>) — Published 2026-07-16

Program participants need final sign-off documentation to mark debris removal complete; insurance proceeds for that removal may then be remitted to the county under duplication-of-benefits rules. The administrative unit, "debris cleared, sign-off complete," closes a file. Whether the lot is livable is a different question entirely.

The offer is $487,000 for a house he paid $310,000 for in 2009. The packet has been on the kitchen table for three weeks. It has fields for square footage, lot size, number of bedrooms. Nowhere on any page is there a line for the oakleaf hydrangea his late wife planted the spring they moved in, or the volunteer tomato that came up on its own from a seed that's been in the compost for years. In late-2030s Northern Virginia, the data-center grid needs his lot for a transmission corridor. The number is fair. Everything about the process is correct. He waters the garden at five-thirty every morning and watches it do what his wife set it up to do.

She's evacuated twice before. She has the system down—go-bag, route, medications on ice, cat carrier by the door. But her mother's ashes are on a shelf in a storage unit past the bayou, and the access road floods before the main corridors close. In this story set in early-2040s Baton Rouge, a woman who has mastered every part of leaving confronts the one variable her system can't solve: a six-pound plastic box she never found a place for, now separated from her by rising water and a gate that won't open.

- [Forty-Five Seconds](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/41/futures/article/29972/markdown>) — By [Wren Castellano](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/73/markdown>) · Published 2026-07-09 · Format: Serial Chapter

Wren has until five p.m. to file a utility hardship appeal that keeps her power on through October. She also has a dead father's voicemail sitting on a legacy telecom server scheduled for purge, a regional office that requires her to show up in person with a death certificate, and a car whose AC blows warm. It's ninety-one degrees in Albuquerque at five forty-seven a.m. She can do both. The math works if nothing else goes wrong.

- [Smoke Practice](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/41/futures/article/28702/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2026-07-03 · Format: Headlamp Practice

The steering wheel holds yesterday's heat at 3:51 AM. A father drives his daughter to cross-country practice on a trail outside Denver, her gym bag smelling of N95 masks and last night's sparklers, the AQI app reading 74, yellow, Moderate — a number he knows the way he knows her shoe size. The teenagers will run six miles through smoke that tastes like a campfire in another county. One runner won't be there because no ride was arranged. It's a routine morning in the early 2030s, and the tension lives entirely in the routine.
