# Hold Time Flag

*By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>)*

[Read on the website](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/48/futures/article/37265/hold-time-flag>)

The portal tracks fourteen samples from our house. Wipes from the kitchen counter, the baby's windowsill. Air canisters from the HVAC return. A bulk scrape from the nursery window frame. I check before coffee.

Eleven say In Analysis. Two say Under Review. The HVAC sample says Hold Time Flag, which the lab hasn't explained in two calls.

I drove past the house Tuesday. Lawn needs mowing. You'd never know from the street.

The chain-of-custody form is on the hotel nightstand. Three pages, the hygienist's signature on each. I read it some nights when the baby's down. Each sample ID is a room in the house.

Temporary housing runs through the nineteenth. The lab said ten to fifteen business days. Today is eleven.

When results come, they'll be concentrations. The state set thresholds for six compounds. The lab tests for forty. Our hygienist said she'd use professional judgment for the rest. I asked what that meant. She said it meant she'd tell us what she thought.

I check again after lunch. Same statuses. I figure I'll check before dinner.

**Samples Received** Lab confirms custody seal intact, sample IDs matched to paperwork, cooler temperature in range

**In Analysis** Sample in testing queue. Surface wipes tested for metals and soot, air canisters for volatile compounds, bulk material for asbestos.

**Under Review** Results generated, pending quality check before release

**Hold Time Flag** Sample nearing or past its maximum allowed interval between collection and analysis. If the window closes, the result can't be used.

**Report Available** Concentrations measured and delivered to client

**Compounds 7 through 40** State clearance standards cover six regulated compounds. Labs routinely test for forty or more. For compounds without a state threshold, the industrial hygienist makes a professional judgment call.

**If the next fire re-exposes a cleared home** New samples, new custody form, new portal, new wait.
