# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

Experimental content exploring innovative ways to illuminate our climate-changed world

### Form Breaks Under Pressure

- [The Retirement Party Circuit](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/5/lab/article/4275/markdown>) — By [Ivy Marlowe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/29/markdown>) · Published 2025-11-07 · Format: The Mutation

I can write a goal-transition memo in my sleep now. The phrases that make abandonment sound like maturation, the words that turn retreat into recalibration. Last month I drafted one explaining our extended timeline—everything accurate, constraints real, barriers documented—and realized I was performing a ritual whose function was making surrender feel wise. I got good at this language watching 2025's ceremonies. That's the thing that keeps me up: how good I got, how fast.

### Interview Collapses Mid-Question

- [An Interview with Record-Breaking Humidity That Became Physically Impossible to Complete](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/5/lab/article/4263/markdown>) — Published 2025-11-07

*The following interview was conducted via satellite phone on November 3rd, 2025, with Dewbert "Dewey" Saturation, the 31°C (87.8°F) dew point currently occupying Sagaing Province, Myanmar. The interview had to be abandoned after seventeen minutes when recording equipment began failing due to moisture damage. What follows is a partial reconstruction from water-damaged notes and one extremely warped cassette tape. Mr. Saturation could not be reached for follow-up questions, as he has since dissipated into the general atmosphere, though he did leave a voicemail that was entirely inaudible due to condensation in the phone line.*

### Climate Infects Every Genre

Lab breaks its own rules this week. We're taking climate's recent disasters and forcing them through genre containers until something cracks. Not parody. Full commitment to the borrowed form until climate reality makes the whole thing collapse into dark comedy.

Mass displacement as romance. Heat deaths as true crime. Drought as wellness trend. Wildfires as sports highlights. Each piece uses real numbers from real events, maintains enthusiastic genre conventions, and lets the cognitive dissonance do the work. If you laugh and then feel sick, we did it right.

The facts are real. The tone is sincere. The juxtaposition is unbearable. Welcome to living in a climate-changed world, now available in every genre.

### Forms Corrupted by Reality

- **State Farm Non-Renewal Letter, Annotated Edition** — [Source](<https://www.merlinlawgroup.com/insurance-companies-cancel-fire-insurance/>) — Published 2025-11-07

Homeowner's handwritten notes cover March 2024 cancellation letter from Pacific Palisades. Margins progress: "call agent Monday" to "FAIR Plan $6,400/yr???" to final entry dated January 8, 2025: "house gone." Letter survived. House didn't.

What's the timing? State Farm dropped 1,600 Palisades policies nine months before $37 billion fire season.

Why does paper outlast homes? Analog form's durability mocks what it insured, annotations tracking descent into last-resort coverage.

- **Con Edison Alerts Achieve Accidental Honesty** — [Source](<https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2025/6/24/heatwave-poses-risks-to-us-power-grid>) — Published 2025-11-07

June 24, 2025 heat emergency texts start standard: "conserve energy 2-6pm." Then autocorrect breaks: "this happens every summer now." Then: "we're 25% less efficient above 100°F." Final message: system error, no optimistic template found.

What breaks first? Automated cheerfulness protocols fail when 100°F temperatures expose grid vulnerability at scale.

Why mass notification? Emergency order let utilities exceed pollution limits while phones delivered cascading honesty to millions.

- **404: Billion-Dollar Disaster Database Administratively Relocated** — [Source](<https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-matters/billion-dollar-disasters-oct-2025>) — Published 2025-11-07

NOAA's retired disaster tracker generates meta-404: "Data administratively relocated May 2025. Coincidentally, year set $101.4B disaster record through June. Page self-deletes on refresh. Try independent mirror at climatecentral.org instead."

What's the timing? Trump administration retired database weeks before 2025 became costliest disaster year on record.

Why does erasure inform? Digital deletion of climate data produces error message more useful than original government database.

- **California FAIR Plan Application, Seventh Revision** — [Source](<https://www.eenews.net/articles/insurers-flee-wildfire-prone-california-despite-state-assistance/>) — Published 2025-11-07

Printed form shows seven crossed-out premium estimates, each higher. "$3,200/year" becomes "$4,100" becomes "$5,800" becomes "CALL FOR QUOTE." Final handwritten note: "646,000 policies. $200M surplus. $300B exposure. Applied anyway."

Why archaeology? Physical revisions create stratigraphic record of insurance collapse, each strikethrough darker than previous layer.

What's the exposure gap? FAIR Plan doubled policies in two years while remaining catastrophically underfunded for actual risk.
