# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 51 — Future Tense

Imagining plausible climate-changed futures to illuminate choices we face today

### Underline Chapter

- [The Relay](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/51/futures/article/39797/markdown>) — By [Wren Castellano](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/73/markdown>) · Published 2026-09-25 · Format: The Underline Series — Weekly Chapter

Reyes has walked the high-country relay circuit for fifteen years, carrying sealed messages between factions who trust her because she never opens them and never adds to them. She knows which charge controllers are lying and by how much. She knows what the rivers feel like this summer, because she put her hand in and pulled it out after ten seconds. Now she's carrying two messages about the same derelict dams on the lower Snake, both sides arguing from a version of the basin that stopped existing a decade ago, and the rule that made her useful is the reason nobody's going to hear it.

### Family Drill

- [Season](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/51/futures/article/39796/markdown>) — By [David Kern](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/36/markdown>) · Published 2026-09-25 · Format: Family Drill

Three binders. A trigger ladder from the first named storm to the order to leave. Go-bags on the closet floor, a contractor who calls back, an evacuation route run nine times. After nine hurricane seasons on the Gulf Coast, this family is the one the neighbors call to ask when they're leaving, and the local station did a segment on them. The house survives every year. Their seventeen-year-old has stopped checking her bag, nobody can remember the last time they drove down to the water for no reason, and the system is working exactly as designed.

### Heat Enterprise

- [The Margin](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/51/futures/article/39798/markdown>) — By [Wren Castellano](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/73/markdown>) · Published 2026-09-25 · Format: Heat Enterprise

In late-2030s Houston, the usable outdoor hours have compressed to pre-dawn and late evening. Maren has built a growing business in that gap — weddings, festivals, corporate events designed for twilight and the hour before sunrise — tracking wet-bulb temperatures, insurance triggers, and the exact minute the sun clears the skyline. But her business partner has already left Houston, her mother has arrived with moving boxes, and a two-hundred-person wedding on Saturday will test whether the margin she's built her life around still holds.

An island community on the North Carolina coast has been relocated inland, and by every measure the move worked. Good drainage, solid construction, houses that stay dry. But seven streets still carry temporary designations from the site plan, and a county signage grant means they need real names. At the meeting, residents begin proposing: Silver Lake, Howard Street, Schoolhouse Creek. Each name arrives with a body attached to it — the sulfur off exposed mud at low tide, sand packed by generations of walking, a ferry's approach felt through dock planks before the horn sounds.

Three years ago a woman started growing food off a cold spring in Oregon's abandoned interior — hand-cut channels, terraced beds, calories and a trade surplus on ground the maps had zeroed out. This week a compact surveyor walks in with a tablet and a length of rebar to designate that spring as a protected thermal refuge. The designation puts her coordinates in a registry every armed faction in the basin can query, and reclassifies her water as habitat flow she'd need fourteen months of paperwork to touch. Her beans have three weeks.

Insurance paid. The house went back up to spec — ember screens on the vents, rated roof, a hundred feet of cleared ground and gravel around the foundation. Four inspections, all passed, notice signed and dated. A family moves back in on a September evening with the air clean and the fire risk low, and their seven-year-old stands in the hall asking which bedroom is hers, because she was four when they left. Light switches are stiff. The cabinets don't make a sound. The go-bag is in the front closet where you'd grab it on the way out. Around ten the wind shifts out of the south, and both parents are sitting up in the dark before either one says anything.

Nora reads a watershed off a data card and reads her apartment's air filter by the pitch of its hum. Fourteen months ago her mother Jan arrived in Boise from Northern California with three suitcases and a three-week plan. The house Jan left behind never burned; it just became uninsurable, then unsellable, and now it bleeds twelve hundred dollars a month. They are sharing 740 square feet through another smoke season, windows taped shut, while Nora's field season opens and closes without her and Jan quietly reorganizes the kitchen into something better than what Nora managed on her own.
