# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

Experimental content exploring innovative ways to illuminate our climate-changed world

### Form Breaks Under Pressure

- [The Optimization](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/7/lab/article/4684/markdown>) — By [Yuki Tanabe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/33/markdown>) · Published 2025-11-21 · Format: The Mutation

The actuary's fingers are cold when she opens the rate model Tuesday morning. Not from temperature—the office is precisely 71 degrees—but from what the spreadsheet is about to make her do. She's been assigned Portfolio Rebalancing, Southeast Region, which is insurance industry language for: figure out how to keep selling policies in Florida without losing money.

### Interview Collapses Mid-Question

- [An Interview with the Last Cold Person in Alaska](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/7/lab/article/4685/markdown>) — Published 2025-11-21

*Editor's note: This interview was conducted in Fairbanks, Alaska on June 15, 2025, nine days before the National Weather Service issued the state's first-ever heat advisory. Our subject, who requested we use only their nickname, has lived in Alaska their entire life. As the conversation progressed, something unusual happened with the room's climate control that neither party can fully explain.*

### Climate Infects Every Genre

Lab is breaking its own rules this week by committing fully to genres that have no business touching climate disaster. Romance novels. Recipe blogs. Sports recaps. Real estate listings. True crime podcasts.

Each piece follows every convention of its borrowed form with absolute sincerity. The horror emerges naturally from the juxtaposition. If you laugh and then immediately feel awful about it, good. That's climate reality landing in your body through a container so inappropriate it becomes impossible to ignore.

Mara's heart raced as their fingers brushed over the last water bottle at Processing Center 7. His sun-weathered face told stories of loss she knew too well. "Fifth displacement?" he whispered. She nodded. When your city drowns, love finds you in evacuation queues. Sometimes the only home left is each other's arms.

### Wrong Format, Right Horror

- [LinkedIn Recommendation: Hurricane Melissa (October 2025, Atlantic Basin)](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/7/lab/article/4692/markdown>) — Published 2025-11-21

I had the pleasure of working with Melissa during her Caribbean deployment last month. Highly recommend.

### What We Wrote Then

- **Wadhams Called Arctic Ice-Free by 2015, Was Wrong** — [Source](<https://www.climate-lab-book.ac.uk/2016/predicting-an-ice-free-arctic-summer/>) — Published 2025-11-21

He predicted too early. We learned alarmists exaggerate. The ice is still melting on schedule. Wrong lesson.

Record solar, cheap batteries, actual economic growth. Still tracking toward 2.9°C. Technology was never the whole problem.

December 2015 prediction. March 2016 reality. Worst bleaching ever recorded. Perfect foresight, zero prevention. We just watched.

- **IPCC 2018: You Have 420 Gigatons Left for 1.5°C** — [Source](<https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/>) — Published 2025-11-21

- **IEA 2017: Coal's Boom Years Are Finally Over** — [Source](<https://www.iea.org/reports/world-energy-outlook-2017>) — Published 2025-11-21

Renewables would meet 40% of growth, coal would plummet. Correct on both counts. India still building plants.

- **Hansen's 1988 Model Checked in 2020: Terrifyingly Accurate** — [Source](<https://teachingthefuture.eu/35-years-climate-predictions/>) — Published 2025-11-21
