# The Docket

> The Docket is a weekly publication about the decisions climate change is already putting in front of Americans: whether to buy the generator, whether the flood insurance is enough, whether to stay in the city you love. It follows the people making those choices now. It treats climate anxiety as a reasonable response to real conditions. It won't tell you what to do, but it shows the tradeoffs clearly.

## Issue 8 — The Lab

Experimental content exploring innovative ways to illuminate our climate-changed world

### Form Breaks Under Pressure

- [I Bought Weather Insurance for an Indoor Concert](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/8/lab/article/5295/markdown>) — By [Ivy Marlowe](<https://anchor.is/docket/team/29/markdown>) · Published 2025-11-28 · Format: The Mutation

I've developed a three-tier system for indoor entertainment: green (proceed as planned), yellow (monitor conditions hourly), red (activate backup venue research). Tonight's a yellow, trending green, which is why I'm standing in line outside a building with a roof in November having purchased weather insurance for the privilege.

### Interview Collapses Mid-Question

- [An Exit Interview with the Carbon Budget We Already Spent](<https://anchor.is/docket/issue/8/lab/article/5296/markdown>) — Published 2025-11-28

*Editor's note: The following interview was conducted via atmospheric sampling equipment at Mauna Loa Observatory on November 22, 2025. Our subject requested we refer to them by their full designation, though they acknowledged this would make for "awkward radio." They also insisted the interview had already happened, was currently happening, and would never happen, all simultaneously. We have attempted to transcribe their responses as accurately as possible, though temporal coherence degraded significantly after question three.*

### Climate Infects Every Genre

Lab exists to break things. This week we're breaking genre.

What happens when you treat planetary collapse with wedding-magazine breathlessness? When you LinkedIn-post about coral reef mortality like it's a promotion? When you ASMR-whisper tornado statistics? When species extinction gets the self-help treatment?

These aren't parodies. They're genuine attempts to inhabit genre conventions so completely that climate reality creates cognitive whiplash. The dissonance is the point. The horror lives in the gap between the cheerful container and its contents. If you finish reading and feel wrong about feeling amused, we succeeded. If you're just uncomfortable, even better.

Saying "I do" on Switzerland's Birch Glacier? BOOK IMMEDIATELY. Our May venue buried Blatten village when permafrost melted. Morning ceremonies recommended (afternoon collapses register 3.1 magnitude). Ice-blue photography guaranteed! Limited availability. Literally. Your forever starts here (venue longevity not guaranteed).

Just hit my biggest milestone yet! 84% of global reefs bleached. History-making numbers. Tipping points aren't setbacks, they're PIVOTS. When 80% mortality hits, you adapt. Grateful for this irreversible growth opportunity. Ready to disrupt your entire biome? Let's connect. #Leadership #ThinkDifferent #NoTurningBack

Close your eyes. Breathe deeply. Feel the 210-mph winds through Enderlin, North Dakota. First EF5 in twelve years. Listen to debris whisper. Let the pressure drop hold you. Notice how the funnel says "unprecedented." This moment is yours. Surrender to the vortex. You are safe here. Namaste.

You cannot hold onto everything. One-third of global species will transition by 2100. The Bramble Cay melomys already released its attachment. Sixty bumblebee species chose local extinction. Release your grip on biodiversity. Your journey toward accepting 17% loss begins with radical acceptance. You are exactly where you need to be.

### What We Wrote Then

- **Paris 2015: The Treaty That Promised 1.5°C** — [Source](<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Agreement>) — Published 2025-11-28

Threw a party for a target we'd overshoot in nine years. Emissions kept climbing. The champagne aged better than the commitment.

Called it landmark year, emissions at 25-year low. Next year they jumped 2.5%. Turns out corners have excellent reversal capability.

- **IEA 2017: Coal's Boom Years Are Finally Over** — [Source](<https://www.iea.org/reports/world-energy-outlook-2017>) — Published 2025-11-28

Predicted coal's death. Then Ukraine happened and Europe relit the furnaces. Boom years take more curtain calls than Cher.

Said irreversible changes coming earlier than expected. By 2025 we'd blown past them. The warnings were the optimistic scenario.

Predicted 2066-2086 for ice-free summers. Reality says 2040s. We're beating every deadline we wish we'd miss by decades.

- **2017: Record $306 Billion in Weather Disasters** — [Source](<https://blogs.edf.org/climate411/2018/01/03/a-look-back-at-2017-the-year-in-weather-disasters-and-the-connection-to-climate-change/>) — Published 2025-11-28

Warned this could become normal. By 2025: $4.5 trillion, 832,000 dead, 9,700 events. Normal would've been a mercy.
