Trigger
Capital One posted Director, Product Design - AI in Experience Design on 05/28/2026 via Workday. Confirmed live today (06/29/2026) with active apply button across McLean, SF, and NYC. No evidence of posting revision since original publication. Confidence: high.
Window
32 days old. Deep in the extended window, which normally favors you. But the calendar changes the math.
July 4th falls Saturday. The observed holiday is Friday. Most hiring managers at companies this size go dark Wednesday afternoon and don't resurface until July 7. A 40-day-old Director posting that sits silent through a holiday week is at serious risk of being pulled for re-scoping when the committee reconvenes.
Send outreach today or tomorrow. Wednesday is the outer edge. You need to land in Daniela Jorge's inbox while she's still in work mode, not while she's mentally checked out for a long weekend.
No revision to the posting language was detected since the 05/28 publish date, which supports a first-pass search still in progress. That status is unverified against Workday's internal revision history, which isn't publicly exposed.
What This Trigger Probably Means for the Design Org
Read the posting for what's absent. No product area, no direct-report count, no business-unit GM. The role sits on the "XD top of house team" reporting to the CDO's senior leadership. The mandate is AI tooling, AI-enabled design process evolution, and AI-centric talent upskilling across the entire XD function.
Every other candidate will read "Director, Product Design" and prepare a product design leadership pitch. They will be wrong. Capital One has hundreds of designers. The hire they need is someone who can answer a question the org hasn't answered yet: how does this function actually work with AI?
Daniela Jorge posted about her SLT offsite focused on second-half priorities on May 18. The role appeared ten days later. That sequence reads like a leadership team that aligned on AI-in-design as a strategic priority and immediately opened the req. Confidence on this inference: moderate. Timing is suggestive, not confirmed.
Your Angle
Lead with "Trust Is the New Interface" and Agentic Labs. Case studies stay in reserve.
The posting names Claude, Gemini, Claude Code, Stately, XState, and Windsurf. Competing candidates will list tool proficiency. You can do something none of them can: point to a published essay that names the core design problem of AI adoption, then point to three live agentic products you built solo that prove you've already moved through the experimentation-to-implementation curve this role is supposed to shepherd for an entire org.
The hook: I've built the agentic workflows you're trying to install at scale.
Brand Pulse, Retail Velocity, and Carrier IQ are live, running systems. Most applicants will say they understand AI tooling. You've shipped it, you know where it breaks, and you know what designers need to trust the output.
Alibaba and Thermo Fisher are secondary. Use them only if asked about enterprise credibility in regulated, matrixed environments. The Alibaba agentic sourcing vision and the Thermo Fisher 5-agent supply coordinator show you've already architected AI-native workflows for complex domains. But they support the conversation. The essay opens it.
Who to Contact
Daniela Jorge, SVP and Chief Design Officer. LinkedIn. She's the buyer. The role reports to her top-of-house team. Her PayPal CDO tenure means she evaluates through a lens of design at financial-services scale with consumer-grade craft expectations.
Public fingerprint: On May 13, she posted about deep customer insights being "one of the most valuable assets a company can own" and explicitly called out avoiding "research theater" to accelerate learning velocity. On May 18, the SLT offsite post naming ten senior leaders and describing second-half priority alignment. No recent conference talks surfaced in Config, Design Matters, or AIGA archives.
Warm intro path: No visible overlap with BCG DV, Alibaba design leadership, ADPList, Designer Fund, or Dive Club. Her May 18 post names ten SLT members: Jen Cardello, Patrick Dohan, Deidre Kolarick, Fahad Osmani, Renee McKeon Rives, Lucas Pettinati, Kim Johnson-Woody, Michael O'Connor, Alanna Y., and Caroline Finnell Gaines. Scan that list against your network. If you recognize anyone, that's your warm path. Otherwise this is cold.
Channel: Cold LinkedIn DM. Anchor to the May 13 "research theater" post. It maps directly to your essay's thesis about trust calibration.
Outreach Messages
Warm message (if you find a mutual through her named SLT):
"Hi Daniela — [mutual name] suggested I reach out. Your May post about avoiding research theater and accelerating learning velocity resonated with something I recently published: 'Trust Is the New Interface,' on why trust in AI is fundamentally a design challenge. I've been testing that thesis by building live agentic products across brand intelligence, CPG, and regulated InsurTech. Your Director, AI in Experience Design role looks like the org-scale version of the same question. Would you be open to a conversation?"
Cold message:
"Hi Daniela — your recent post about avoiding 'research theater' to accelerate learning velocity named something I've been working on from the build side. I published 'Trust Is the New Interface' this month arguing that trust in AI is a design challenge before it's anything else, then built three live agentic products (brand sentiment, CPG intelligence, InsurTech automation) to pressure-test where designers' judgment has to stay in the loop and where it doesn't. Your Director, AI in Experience Design posting reads like the org-scale version of that same question. I'd welcome the chance to share what I've learned about the experimentation-to-adoption curve. Open to a brief conversation this week before the holiday?"
What not to say:
- Do not pitch tool fluency. The posting names specific tools, but the mandate is strategic and organizational. Leading with Claude Code proficiency signals you read this as a hands-on IC role. You want them to see the architect.
- Do not praise Capital One's design culture generically. Daniela has been building the org for nearly three years. She knows what it is. Specificity about her stated priorities (learning velocity, insight quality) signals homework. Generic praise signals a template.
The Non-Obvious Thing
Capital One's 2025 10-K filing names "agentic commerce" as an emerging risk category: autonomous AI agents initiating transactions on behalf of users. The filing flags increased fraud exposure, liability shifts, and generative AI's capacity for "hallucinatory" outputs in customer-facing processes.
The C-suite already frames agentic AI as a customer trust and liability problem. The XD org transformation role exists inside that context, whether the posting says so or not. Competing candidates will frame this as "help designers use AI tools better." You can frame it as the trust architecture for AI-assisted experiences, a design problem you've already named and published on. That's why the essay leads.
Warning Signs
The tool list (Claude Code, Stately, XState, Windsurf) is unusually specific for a Director-level role. If the hiring committee weighted this posting toward hands-on prototyping and code-adjacent implementation rather than strategic org design, the role may be scoped smaller than the "XD top of house" language suggests.
Ask early: Is this role expected to define the AI-in-design strategy for the XD org, or to implement a strategy that's already been defined? The answer tells you whether you're walking into a mandate or a set of instructions. You want the mandate.
- Suno's live Head of Product Design: The Ashby posting mandates leading Product Design, Design Engineering, and UX Research, and the Spark incubator controversy makes trust architecture the central design question there.
- Gusto's AI service design language: Their Senior Staff Service Designer posting explicitly asks about AI handoffs, exception handling, and what happens when AI gets something wrong, which maps directly to your Thermo Fisher exception-first work.
- Capital One's adjacent XD hiring cluster: A Product Design Director, Consumer & Developer Experience posted 06/11 and a Product Design Manager posted 06/26 suggest the XD org is scaling multiple leadership seats simultaneously, not just the AI role.
- NIST's AI Risk Management Framework: The framework's trustworthy AI guidance makes the "trust is a design problem" thesis institutionally legible beyond your essay, useful if Capital One's compliance or risk teams are stakeholders in this hire.
