# On Deck

> Ground Truth follows AI as it's actually built, funded, and shipped: consumer assistants, vertical products from legal and healthcare to agriculture, and the capital moving behind them. It's written for practitioners who've shipped agentic systems and want more than press releases. It reads interaction models, architectures, trust patterns, and funding logic to judge which companies are serious, and where it's worth building next.

## Issue 15 — AI Capital

Where money flows and what it signals

### Deal Teardown

- [Manus and the Product-Layer Cost of Reversing an Agent Acquisition](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/issue/15/ai-capital/article/42795/markdown>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-11 · Format: Anchor Deal Breakdown

In April, China ordered Meta to reverse its completed acquisition of Manus. Over the next five months, Manus's help center documented what that meant for users: OAuth grants that couldn't transfer, accounts deleted because they were created under Meta's ownership, hosted deployments that went dark during the deletion window. It is the most detailed public record of what unwinding an agent acquisition costs at the product layer. That cost scales with integration depth, and it is already changing how agent deals get structured.

### Capital Pattern

- [Five Deal Forms and What They Reveal About Product Coupling](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/issue/15/ai-capital/article/42781/markdown>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-11

The structure of an acquisition tells you what the buyer thinks can be pulled apart. AMD buying [World Labs outright](https://ir.amd.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/1299/amd-to-acquire-world-labs-to-advance-the-future-of-ai-compute) for $8.2B says the research team, the spatial-intelligence models, and the workload feedback into chip design have to stay together. Apple [licensing Huxe's IP and hiring its people](https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/10/apple-discloses-deal-to-hire-team-and-license-tech-from-personalized-podcast-startup-huxe/) while the product shuts down says the talent is worth extracting and the product itself is not.

### Trajectory Read

- [TypeSafe AI's $870M Option Price](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/issue/15/ai-capital/article/42782/markdown>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-11

Twenty-four days from a $40M seed to an $870M Series A at $7.5B. No revenue diligence was possible in that window. a16z and Sequoia priced an option on a new model category — structured decision inference that bypasses text generation — and the valuation reflects conviction about the category, not evidence of a business.

### Two Deals, One Lens

- [What SAP Is Actually Buying with TechWolf](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/issue/15/ai-capital/article/42793/markdown>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-11 · Format: Two Deals, One Lens

SAP is acquiring TechWolf, a live graph of what employees actually do, inferred from work tools rather than HR records. The asset gives SAP's Joule agents organizational context they couldn't generate internally. It may also take that context away from Workday and Oracle, who were already using it. One of two acquisitions in eight days that show where enterprise agents are headed.

- [Why Salesforce Paid a Strategic Premium for Listen Labs](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/issue/15/ai-capital/article/42794/markdown>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-11 · Format: Two Deals, One Lens

Salesforce paid ~$2B for Listen Labs, an AI-moderated interview engine that captures why customers behave the way they do. The asset gives Agentforce behavioral context that CRM records can't supply. The strategic logic matches SAP's TechWolf deal, announced eight days apart, but the intelligence differs: customer motivation instead of organizational structure. Reading them together clarifies both.

### Deal Board

Two signals cut across this period's remaining deals. AMD's coordinated bets on World Labs (model research) and Vinci (physics simulation) show a chipmaker buying visibility into how physical-AI workloads will evolve — shaping future silicon, not selling current silicon. Meanwhile, domain owners are deciding that licensing content to AI companies is a worse position than owning them. C.H.BECK's majority takeover of Noxtua is the clearest case: lock the data advantage into equity structure, not a contract that can be renegotiated.

In regulated verticals, acquirers are building sequential workflow chains where each layer produces the evidence the next layer requires — Behavox-Apiax in compliance, Automation Anywhere-Boost.ai in customer-facing automation. The competitive logic is the same in both: displacing one component means replacing the data handoff to every adjacent component. Company-reported revenue claims below are flagged where unaudited.

Strategic acquisition, $8.2B. AMD is paying for a research feedback loop: World Labs' spatial and physical-AI workloads tell AMD how to design future chips for those workloads. Fei-Fei Li becomes EVP and chief scientist. AMD Ventures also backed Vinci this period — coordinated positioning across the physical-AI stack.

- **Mecka Sells Human Motion Data to Robot Makers** — [Source](<https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/07/robot-data-startup-mecka-ai-nabs-60m-from-sequoia/>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) — Published 2026-10-11

$60M Series B, Sequoia-led. Mecka pays people to record everyday tasks via body sensors, converts that motion data into robot training signals. Claims $100M+ ARR by June 2026 (unaudited — exceptional if real for a company founded in 2024). Nvidia, Qualcomm, Samsung investing as hardware buyers who need this data supply to exist.

- **Vinci Brings Continuous Physics Simulation to Hardware Design** — [Source](<https://www.getvinci.ai/blog/why-physics-needs-to-move-at-the-pace-of-design/>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) — Published 2026-10-11

Tag: Physical AI

$250M Series B at $1.5B valuation. Vinci gives hardware engineers continuous thermal and structural analysis during design rather than at isolated simulation checkpoints. AMD Ventures participating here alongside the World Labs acquisition — AMD is placing bets at both the simulation and model-research layers of physical AI simultaneously.

- **German Publisher Takes Majority Ownership of Noxtua** — [Source](<https://www.noxtua.com/news/press-releases/series-c>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) — Published 2026-10-11

100M+ euro Series C, with C.H.BECK converting from lead investor to majority shareholder. Noxtua's jurisdiction-specific legal workspaces derive their moat from exclusive publisher content. Owning the AI company locks that advantage into equity rather than a licensing contract that could expire or be renegotiated. Law firm investors CMS and Dentons exit but remain customers.

- **Clio Acquires Judiciary AI to Reach Court Workflows** — [Source](<https://www.clio.com/about/press/clio-acquires-learned-hand-judiciary-ai/>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) — Published 2026-10-11

Strategic acquisition. Clio extends from law-firm practice management into court workflows by acquiring Learned Hand, which builds AI for judges and court staff. The competitive value is access to court docket data and procedural records that Clio's law-firm customers already interact with — a data position competitors cannot easily replicate.

- **Bloomberg Completes Canoe Deal, Combined Product Already Live** — [Source](<https://canoeintelligence.com/bloomberg-completes-canoe-intelligence-acquisition-advancing-strategy-to-transform-private-markets-investing/>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) — Published 2026-10-11

Completed acquisition. Canoe converts unstructured private-market documents — capital calls, K-1s, distribution notices — into validated portfolio data already feeding Bloomberg PORT Enterprise. Worth noting: this is the only deal in the period where the combined product is operating, not stated intent. Watch it as a live test of whether acquisition rationale produces real product behavior.

- **Behavox Acquires Apiax, Completes Compliance Evidence Chain** — [Source](<https://www.behavox.com/news/2026-behavox-acquires-apiax>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) — Published 2026-10-11

Tag: Finance AI

Completed acquisition. Behavox already owned surveillance and archiving; Apiax adds the upstream layer — financial regulation converted into machine-readable rules. The combined chain runs from regulatory text through behavioral monitoring to evidence preservation. Each layer generates what the next layer needs, making the system structurally hard to displace one component at a time.

- **Hexagon Buys Rocscience to Calibrate Sensors Against Simulation** — [Source](<https://hexagon.com/company/newsroom/press-releases/2026/hexagon-to-acquire-rocscience-closing-the-loop-between-realworld-monitoring-and-advanced-simulation>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) — Published 2026-10-11

Tag: Field Industrial

$535M strategic acquisition. Hexagon owns monitoring sensors (radar, structural health) at mining and infrastructure sites. Rocscience owns engineering-simulation models predicting rock and soil behavior. Combined: live sensor data updates the model, model outputs direct where sensors should focus. At ~10-11x forward revenue, the multiple reflects perceived scarcity of domain-specific simulation assets.

- **Automation Anywhere Adds Regulated-Industry Conversational AI Layer** — [Source](<https://www.automationanywhere.com/company/press-room/conversational-ai-finally-connected-work-automation-anywhere-acquire-boostai>) — By [Reva Sandoval](<https://anchor.is/on-deck-vvSq/team/143/markdown>) — Published 2026-10-11

Tag: Enterprise AI

Strategic acquisition pending. Boost.ai brings customer-facing conversational AI with a hybrid NLU/LLM architecture built for auditable behavior in compliance-critical flows — financial services, insurance, telecom. Combined with last year's Aisera acquisition (internal employee-service AI), Automation Anywhere now covers both back-office and customer-facing automation surfaces. Boost.ai's European footprint adds GDPR-aligned credentials.
