Act this week
The Capital One Director, Product Design — AI in Experience Design role reposted August 21 under a new requisition number with revised language. The pipeline has restarted. The committee spent nearly three months trying to fill this seat, and the revisions tell you what the first slate got wrong. What they learned they need maps closer to your profile than the original posting did.
Deploy the engagement package now. Lead with Trust Is the New Interface and Agentic Labs. Do not wait for the correction-lineage artifact.
Before the requisition
The public record does not reveal a specific departure or vacancy that triggered R243245. This is a new seat, not a backfill. The mandate was being defined in real time, not inherited.
Two signals preceded the posting. CDO Daniela Jorge reorganized XD senior leadership territories: Lucas Pettinati joined to lead Enterprise Consumer Product and Customer Identity and Core; Deidre Kolarick's remit expanded across Bank, Business, and Card; Fahad Osmani took responsibility for a newly formed Enterprise Platforms & Software design team. The org was restructuring around product domains. Nobody was assigned to own AI across all of them.
Then in March 2026, Daniela gave a public interview discussing AI changing how designers create and work, pairing opportunity with concern and asking how people remain at the center. That interview reads differently now: the CDO was already thinking publicly about the problem the requisition would try to solve two months later.
Four events, May through August
May 28. Capital One posted the role under requisition R243245. The mandate: "defining the long-term destination of Design in the age of AI." McLean, New York, San Francisco. Patrick Dohan, VP Design, Premium, promoted the role on LinkedIn, naming CDO Daniela Jorge and the Design Leadership Team as close collaborators. Patrick has been publicly documented at Capital One since at least December 2023; Daniela described herself as approaching three years at Capital One in a midyear post, placing her arrival around mid-2023. Both are established in their seats. This search extends existing strategy, not a new leader filling her own roster.
Early July. The listing disappeared from Capital One's search surfaces and returned a 404 on direct access. The record does not establish whether this was a deliberate pull or a technical failure. The gap matters. I'll come back to it.
July 19–20. R243245 reappeared with the same requisition number but a refreshed date and revised language. The vague "long-term destination" framing was replaced with ownership of roadmaps across three named areas: AI tooling, AI-enabled design-process evolution, and AI-centric talent upskilling. A player-coach expectation appeared. So did a preferred qualification for leading AI-process implementation at scale. The prior On Deck battlecard treated this as a live sourcing signal and counted 34 concurrent Capital One design openings.
August 21. New requisition number: R249772. Same title. Same three-area roadmap, same tooling scope, same player-coach expectations, same locations, same salary bands. Several sentences changed, and those sentences are what matters.
Reading the August revisions
Three shifts.
The organizational position dropped a level. May and July placed this director as part of Capital One's XD "top-of-house" team, their term for the senior design leadership group under CDO Daniela Jorge. August changed this to working closely with that team. The word "directly" was also removed from the sentence about partnering with senior Product, Engineering, and Design executives.
The personal-authority requirement disappeared. Earlier versions required "gravitas" sufficient to influence C-suite executives. August cut it.
Strategic influence shifted from individual to infrastructural. July said the director personally shapes product direction and outcomes. August: "Create an infrastructure for design leaders to shape product direction and outcomes."
The committee started by looking for a visionary peer to the CDO, someone with the executive presence to sit at the senior leadership table and personally drive AI strategy across the org. After three months, they are looking for a builder who equips existing design leaders with the tools, processes, and frameworks to drive AI adoption themselves.
That early-July disappearance likely marks the moment the first slate stalled, whether candidates declined or the committee couldn't reach consensus. The July refresh added operational specificity. When that still didn't close, August lowered the seniority ceiling and made the mandate about enablement infrastructure.
What the committee learned
Capital One's XD org already has the AI vision. Daniela Jorge has been setting it for three years. She reorganized her leadership territories to match product domains and was speaking publicly about AI's impact on design practice before this requisition existed. The org has direction. It lacks the operational layer that translates direction into changed behavior across hundreds of designers.
The posting sequence shows this gap coming into focus. The committee wrote the May version for a strategist who could sit beside the CDO and define where AI takes design. Three months of interviewing taught them that the vision layer was never the vacancy. August asks for the person who builds the system — tooling, process, upskilling — that makes the existing vision operational at scale.
Where you sit in the revised competitive field
The redefinition reshapes who is likely in the pipeline and where you win or lose.
AI-native design leaders (Anthropic, OpenAI, well-funded AI startups) were probably the archetype the committee had in mind in May. Strong AI brand pedigree. But the August language — "create an infrastructure for design leaders" — asks for proof of enablement at scale, not proof of designing AI products. Most AI-native candidates design internally. They haven't published methodology because they haven't needed to. Your Trust essay and Agentic Labs artifacts are externalized, forward-looking design methodology, the kind of thing a hiring committee can look at and see the system this person would install. Against candidates who can talk about AI but can't show a transferable methodology, that is a real differentiator. Confidence that this archetype was in the first-round pipeline: moderate. I'm inferring from the language changes, not from confirmed pipeline data.
Enterprise design directors (Salesforce, Adobe, large-bank peers) match on org scale. They underperform on AI-native credibility and published frontier thinking. The three-area roadmap — tooling, process evolution, talent upskilling — requires demonstrated AI-in-design methodology, not generic transformation leadership. Your Alibaba scale plus Agentic Labs specificity covers both dimensions. Confidence: moderate.
IC-track senior candidates (Staff or Senior Staff from FAANG or late-stage companies) are likely eliminated by the August language. "Infrastructure for design leaders to shape product direction" is a leadership-enablement mandate. The posting is not looking for the best designer in the room. Confidence: high. The language is unambiguous.
Your vulnerability. You don't have a case study showing enablement infrastructure deployed across a large design org. The Trust essay argues for the methodology. Agentic Labs demonstrates the artifacts. Neither shows the organizational installation, the part where hundreds of designers actually change how they work because of a system you built. The correction-lineage artifact would partially close this gap, but the window cost of waiting exceeds the positioning gain. The committee has been searching for three months. They will discount a missing case study before they extend the search for a perfect candidate.
Prediction
The search reset with R249772. A new requisition number combined with substantive language changes indicates a redefined and reapproved role. The pipeline is early. The committee is motivated: three months of unfilled search creates real organizational pressure, especially given the 35+ concurrent design roles Capital One is currently running and the broader XD buildout underway. Jen Cardello, who leads Capital One's Experience Design Research function (now rebranding to "User Intelligence"), recently promoted 11 openings across that team: one senior director, one director, one senior manager, and eight leads. Her exact title is not confirmed in the public record, but her functional leadership is clear from the scope of that hiring push.
The first two weeks of the reset are the highest-value window. The new pipeline is thin. The committee now knows what it wants after three months of calibration. Early candidates who match the revised language get outsized attention because the committee can finally see what "right" looks like.
What would have to be true for this to be wrong: The requisition number changed for administrative reasons — Workday housekeeping, budget-cycle reapproval — and the existing candidate slate carried over intact. You'd be entering a mature pipeline rather than a fresh one. The urgency would be lower, but the action would be the same: apply. A mature pipeline with an unfilled seat still needs candidates, and the language changes still favor your profile regardless of pipeline state.
Contact recommendation
Primary route: Patrick Dohan, VP, Design, Premium at Capital One. He is the confirmed sponsor of this search. His hiring post is the most direct first-person public promotion of the role. Whether he is the formal hiring manager or a peer sponsor, he is the person most likely to route a strong candidate into the process.
Executive route: Daniela Jorge, SVP and Chief Design Officer. Patrick's hiring post is more recent and more role-specific; start with Patrick.
Warm-path status: unresolved. Check your LinkedIn mutual-connection graph with both contacts before choosing the channel. If you have 3+ mutuals with Patrick, reference them in the close. If you have a direct connection to either, ask for an introduction rather than sending cold outreach.
Post-outreach expectations. Enterprise recruiting cycles are slower. Response within 5–7 business days is normal. Follow up at day 10 if silent, then day 20. A recruiter screen and hiring manager screen in the same week would be unusually fast; if that happens, this role may close quickly. Two follow-ups maximum before you redirect energy.
The posting is one day old under a new requisition. The language changes favor your positioning. Three months of search fatigue is working in your favor. Lead with Trust Is the New Interface and Agentic Labs.
- Daniela's freshest AI language: Her March 2026 interview is the newest verified first-person AI statement from the CDO — monitor her LinkedIn for anything more recent that could sharpen the outreach hook.
- Ki C.'s appointment as precedent: A Director, Research and User Intelligence for Premium and Travel recently joined and the listing closed, confirming that Capital One's XD director-level searches are converting, not just cycling.
- Concurrent XD leadership seats: Capital One's design jobs index shows Senior Director roles in Card Platforms & Data and Research & User Intelligence alongside the AI director, which means the hiring committee is evaluating multiple leadership candidates simultaneously and may cross-reference profiles.
- Design Systems guardrails signal: The prior battlecard flagged a Design Systems IC role covering "AI-Native Design Guardrails" and the shift from asset creation toward experience auditing and automation coaching — if that seat filled, the person in it is a likely stakeholder in the AI director's mandate.
