Board as of August 29, 2026. The scan covered more than 200 listings across Ashby, Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, and direct career pages for 60+ companies, plus VC portfolio boards (Sequoia, a16z, YC Work at a Startup). Sixteen entries survived the rubric: three confirmed Act, one conditional on a date I can't verify, ten retirements. DoorDash and Flex both surfaced through IC clusters — five and three simultaneous Staff postings — but neither company clears 8 on the company rubric, so those clusters are monitor signals rather than action triggers. The list is supposed to run to 100. The verified field is 16, and that gap is the rubric working.
Two fields added per entry since last issue. Screening risk names the inference most likely to kill your candidacy before anyone talks to you. Evidence gate turns the biggest unknown into a question with a routing consequence: proceed, hold, or retire. Why now stays what it has been — the timing-specific trigger. Those three lines, read across all sixteen entries, are enough to plan the week.
Entries marked 🆕 were posted within the last 72 hours.
Vanta Director (Battlecard published today), OpenAI Codex Growth Lead, Headway Group Practices.
AI-Native Product Design
Five roles where AI is the core product and the design problem is how humans interact with, trust, or supervise it. The board's two strongest Acts are here. Gray Swan has a clear path to Act — the $40M Series A is confirmed — but at roughly 50 people the equity carries execution risk and the scope question below is unresolved. Nubank AI Private Banker is held back by public-company equity and a title that changed. Hightouch is an Act if the posting is fresh and a retirement if it isn't, and I can't tell which. Resolve that date before you spend an hour on it.
1. Vanta — Director of Product Design 🆕 | Aug 25 | 4 days Compliance automation platform replacing manual security audits with continuous monitoring. Battlecard published today.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Series D ($150M at $4.15B valuation, July 2025), pre-IPO, ~500 employees, ~$500M total raised.
- Offices: SF, remote-eligible.
- Value chain: Midstream compliance infrastructure sitting between security tools and audit bodies. Design owns the surfaces where a customer decides whether to trust an automated compliance assessment — the moment before they accept or override a finding.
- Best at: Turning compliance from a periodic event into a continuous automated state. The product bet is that companies will trust software to tell them they're compliant, which makes trust design the whole product.
- Why now: Battlecard published today. Four days old, pipeline still thin.
- Signals: The Head of Design search has been unfilled for 54 days (retired as a listing, but the vacancy persists). This Director posted beneath that open seat. An employee repost ~3 weeks ago confirmed the Head search was still active. Reading those together, the Director may be a hedge — filling the operational gap while the Head search continues.
- Tier: Enterprise platform. Tier Playbook: Read Enterprise platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 10/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 3, Design influence 2, Trajectory 3. Role 14/15 — Comp 3, Scope 3, Craft 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: Vanta's hardest problem is the exception moment — the platform says "you're compliant," and the user needs to know why, verify the evidence chain, and understand what to do when something breaks. Thermo Fisher's 197-orders-surface-the-3-that-matter pattern is the structural match: exception-first design in a regulated context where a missed flag becomes a compliance event, with 100% partner adoption showing the trust architecture earned professional buy-in. Carrier IQ adds the second layer — automated coverage selection in regulated insurance workflows, where a system makes consequential decisions professionals have to accept or override. You have both the exception-first pattern and trust architecture for automated professional decisions; most candidates at this level have one.
- Screening risk: "Head of Product" as your most recent title. A reviewer scanning resumes reads that as a product leader trying to get back into design. Handle it in the first thirty seconds of any conversation.
- Evidence gate: Does the Director own AI-governance rules, or only the surfaces displaying agent outputs? Proceed either way — the Battlecard covers both framings — but ask early, because the answer changes which case you lead with in the portfolio review.
- Verdict: Act. Battlecard ready. Move Monday.
2. OpenAI — Product Design Lead, Growth—Codex | Aug 18 | 11 days AI research company. Codex is the developer-facing code-generation product; this role owns developer adoption and retention.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Pre-IPO, ~3,500 employees. Highest equity potential on the board.
- Offices: SF, hybrid.
- Value chain: Upstream model provider with downstream product surfaces. Growth—Codex sits at the conversion point where model capability meets developer behavior.
- Best at: Frontier AI capability deployed at consumer and developer scale simultaneously.
- Why now: Eleven days is fresh but compressing. Silber's podcast criteria landed two days before the posting, so the evaluation surface is documented and the window is narrowing.
- Signals: Silber articulated Growth evaluation criteria on a podcast Aug 16; this posted Aug 18. Treat the podcast as the real job description. Prior OpenAI leadership comp: $347K–$405K. His stated preferences: composable primitives over siloed experiences, reuse over addition, comfort with instability, humility over confidence theater. A feature-additive portfolio is structurally misaligned with what he said he wants.
- Tier: AI-native. Tier Playbook: Read AI-native playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 11/12 — AI centrality 3, Stage/equity 3, Design influence 2, Trajectory 3. Role 14/15 — Comp 3, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: Codex Growth is a trust-ramp problem: getting a developer from trying AI-generated code to relying on it daily. The Trust essay's core argument — users anchor to the worst outcome, and one confident wrong answer does more damage than ten correct ones repair — describes exactly what happens when a developer gets one bad suggestion and then manually reviews everything for the next month. Allē's 3.2× redemption lift proves activation-to-habit conversion at 30M-member scale. You have the published framework explaining why the ramp stalls and the metrics from having unstalled one.
- Screening risk: Your portfolio reads as enterprise platform redesign, and Silber's stated surface favors extending existing systems over adding features. Lead with the Trust essay and Agentic Labs. Keep Alibaba in reserve.
- Evidence gate: Is the Growth mandate primarily activation (new developer to first session) or retention (active developer to daily reliance)? Allē if activation, Trust essay if retention. Ask before the portfolio review.
- Verdict: Act. Needs a Battlecard. Prioritize this week.
3. Hightouch — Staff Product Designer, AI Creative Tools | Greenhouse updated Aug 12 | Original date unresolved Data activation platform connecting customer data warehouses to marketing tools. AI Creative Tools is a newer surface for AI-generated creative assets.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Series C, ~$80M raised, pre-IPO, ~200 employees.
- Offices: SF, remote-eligible.
- Value chain: Midstream data infrastructure between warehouses and marketing execution. AI Creative Tools extends into content generation, where the design problem is how marketers direct an AI to produce, evaluate, and iterate on creative without losing brand control.
- Best at: Defined the reverse-ETL category. CTO-led product culture with high technical expectations of designers.
- Why now: Entirely conditional on posting age. Inside 21 days, this is your second-best opportunity on the board and the pipeline is early. At 43+ days it's a retirement. One question decides it.
- Signals: Greenhouse page updated Aug 12. Original posting date not exposed. No corroborating first-seen date on aggregators or LinkedIn.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read Growth-stage platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 10/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 3, Design influence 2, Trajectory 3. Role 12/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: The work here is designing how a marketer directs an agent to produce something, then judges and iterates on what it made. Retail Velocity is the closest live analog — an enterprise user directing an agent to produce operational intelligence, where the design question is what the human needs to see to trust and act on the output. Alibaba's +20% transaction lift speaks to the evaluation surface: did the design measurably change how users find and act on information? Your agentic work is shipped and running, not concepts.
- Screening risk: The portfolio reads B2B enterprise. Agentic Labs bridges to creative tooling, but they're solo-built, and a reviewer may question whether the pattern survives a team-led product org.
- Evidence gate: What is the original posting date? Inside 21 days: Act, route to Battlecard. 22–42: Watch, hold for refresh. 43+: retire. Check LinkedIn for recruiter posts, or ask a Hightouch connection directly.
- Verdict: Act (conditional). Rubric clears. Freshness unresolved. Get the date before you invest outreach time.
4. Nubank — Senior Design Manager, AI Private Banker | Aug 21 | 8 days Digital bank serving 100M+ customers. AI Private Banker is an AI-native financial advisor. The Nubank AI Private Banker Opportunity Brief covers the company moment and outreach artifacts; this entry scores and routes only.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Public (NYSE: NU), ~8,000 employees.
- Offices: Sao Paulo HQ, US-remote design roles.
- Value chain: Vertically integrated digital bank. AI Private Banker is a downstream consumer product built on Nubank's data infrastructure.
- Best at: Scaling a digital-first bank past 100M customers while holding a design quality bar most fintechs abandon at that size.
- Why now: Eight days fresh. The title now reads Senior Design Manager rather than Head of Design, and that scope change needs answering before you calibrate outreach.
- Signals: Ethan Eismann conducts the asynchronous portfolio review. Posted alongside Digital Assets (entry 9) and Global Expansion — Nubank is building several design seats at once.
- Tier: AI-native. Tier Playbook: Read AI-native playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 9/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 2, Trajectory 3. Role 12/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 2, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: See Opportunity Brief. The brief was written against a Head-level role. A Senior Design Manager title may mean narrower scope; confirm before you calibrate intensity.
- Screening risk: See Opportunity Brief. The downlevel adds one variable: if this is a defined-mandate execution seat rather than a leadership-shaping one, the positioning changes.
- Evidence gate: Is Senior Design Manager a downleveled version of the Head role we were tracking, or a separate seat beneath an incoming Head? That determines whether the brief's positioning still holds. Ask in the first conversation.
- Verdict: Watch. Company score (9/12) is one point below Act. Role clears. Read the brief, then decide on the title-scope question.
5. Gray Swan — Staff Product Designer 🆕 | Aug 26 | 3 days AI safety company building evaluation and red-teaming tools for AI models. Raised $40M Series A at a Forbes-reported $200M valuation, ~50 employees.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Series A ($40M, May 2026), ~$200M valuation (Forbes-reported), ~50 employees.
- Offices: Remote-eligible (role listing).
- Value chain: Upstream AI safety infrastructure — the evaluation layer model developers use before deployment. Design scope is unusually broad for the headcount because the evaluation interface is the product.
- Best at: Commercializing AI safety evaluation. Most of this work happens inside research labs; Gray Swan is selling it. NIST partnership on AI-agent security red-teaming confirmed.
- Why now: Three days old, and at 50 people an early application reaches the decision-maker without an intermediary.
- Signals: $40M Series A (May 2026). NIST CAISI partnership on large-scale AI-agent red-teaming. Comp: $205K–$255K plus bonus and equity.
- Tier: AI-native. Tier Playbook: Read AI-native playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 10/12 — AI centrality 3, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 3, Trajectory 2. Role 12/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: The problem is the evaluation interface — how a researcher or operator judges whether a model is safe, what they need on screen to make that call, and what the interface does when the assessment is ambiguous. Brand Pulse is the nearest pattern you've shipped: a live system whose central design question is what a human monitoring agent output needs to see in real time, with sentiment scoring, urgency flags, source attribution, and hourly health scores. The Trust essay's five-handoff framework supplies the architecture for how trust moves between human evaluators and an AI system. Live agent-monitoring UX, where the challenge was making agent-generated assessments interpretable and actionable, is what safety evaluation tools are solving.
- Screening risk: The portfolio reads as large-org leadership, and a 50-person safety company may infer you're too senior and too enterprise to build from nothing. Front-load the BCG DV 0-to-1 builds and Agentic Labs. Also note the process includes a 90-minute technical interview with live coding — current code fluency is an explicit screen here.
- Evidence gate: Does the Staff designer own product direction, or work beneath the UX Lead the posting references? Product direction: proceed to Battlecard. Execution beneath a lead: the ceiling limits the opportunity regardless of AI centrality.
- Verdict: Watch. Both scores clear. The scope question below the UX Lead is the only gate; resolve it before investing outreach time, and if the answer is product direction, this becomes an Act.
Regulated Operations and Provider Workflows
Three roles where the design problem is high-stakes workflow under compliance constraint with multiple professional roles sharing a record. Headway Group Practices is the Act — fresh, and the portfolio parallel is unusually precise. Capital One is a different situation: its Director posting is the third iteration of the same AI-in-experience search, and the sequence itself is worth reading, but Bay Area eligibility is unconfirmed and that alone holds the verdict.
6. Headway — Staff Product Designer, Group Practices | Aug 19 | 10 days Mental health marketplace connecting patients with therapists and handling insurance. Group Practices extends into multi-provider practice management.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Series D, $750M+ raised, pre-IPO, ~800 employees.
- Offices: NYC HQ, remote-eligible.
- Value chain: Vertically integrated healthcare marketplace handling credentialing, billing, and patient matching. Group Practices covers multi-provider coordination: how several therapists in one practice share patients, schedules, billing, and clinical records with insurance compliance on every interaction.
- Best at: Absorbing the administrative burden that keeps therapists from accepting insurance. The bet is that if you remove the paperwork, therapists take insurance patients and patients get care.
- Why now: Ten days fresh, and two Headway design seats open at once means active org-building. Early enough to be among the first positioned candidates.
- Signals: Provider CRM (entry 7) posted Aug 3. Two design seats open simultaneously.
- Tier: Healthcare/Regulated. Tier Playbook: Read Healthcare/Regulated playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 10/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 3, Design influence 2, Trajectory 3. Role 12/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 2, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: Multi-provider coordination in a regulated clinical context. American Red Cross is the closest structural parallel you have: three roles — field volunteers, finance officers, program directors — sharing one record for the first time, FEMA audit trails built in, $847K disbursed across 1,689 cases in two weeks, and surge architecture that absorbed 10x volume with zero retraining. Several professional roles on a single case record with compliance on every touch is the same shape. Plenty of candidates have regulated-domain experience or multi-stakeholder platform experience. Fewer have both in the same build.
- Screening risk: No healthcare or clinical domain experience in the published portfolio. Thermo Fisher's pharma work and Red Cross's FEMA compliance transfer structurally, but a reviewer may screen for healthcare vocabulary before reaching the transferable proof.
- Evidence gate: Does Group Practices involve AI-assisted provider matching or clinical decision support? If AI is in scope, lead Trust essay plus Red Cross. If it's pure workflow, lead Red Cross plus Thermo Fisher. Ask before the portfolio review.
- Verdict: Act. Needs a Battlecard. The regulated-domain proof is strong, and the missing healthcare vocabulary is a positioning problem rather than a disqualifier — say plainly that you've built this system architecture in pharma and disaster relief, and the compliance constraints were at least as demanding.
7. Headway — Staff Product Designer, Provider CRM | Aug 3 | 26 days Same company. Provider CRM is the relationship layer for therapists on the platform — how they run their practice through Headway.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Same as entry 6.
- Offices: NYC HQ, remote-eligible.
- Value chain: Same platform, provider side.
- Best at: Same as entry 6.
- Why now: Extended at 26 days. Go after Group Practices and raise this one in the same conversation rather than running separate outreach.
- Signals: 26 days, extended. Justification: healthcare design roles run thinner pools and longer fill cycles, and two simultaneous seats suggest active org-building.
- Tier: Healthcare/Regulated. Tier Playbook: Read Healthcare/Regulated playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 10/12. Role 11/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 2, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: This is the provider-side platform experience — how a therapist runs a practice, patients, and billing through someone else's product. Alibaba's supplier-side redesign addressed the same relationship: 200K+ suppliers running their business on a platform where UX moved transaction volume, with +20% daily transactions showing the redesign changed behavior at scale. That work was specifically about making a platform serve professional users whose livelihood depends on it, which is the relationship therapists have with Headway.
- Screening risk: Same healthcare gap as entry 6, compounded by 26 days of age. The committee may already have seen healthcare-native candidates.
- Evidence gate: Still actively sourcing, or narrowing to finalists? Active: proceed, behind Group Practices. Finalist stage: hold.
- Verdict: Watch. Extended. Group Practices is the stronger Headway target; pursue that and ask about this one.
8. Capital One — Director, Product Design—AI in Experience Design | Aug 21 | 8 days Large bank. The role designs AI-powered customer experiences across Capital One's digital products.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Public (NYSE: COF), ~55,000 employees.
- Offices: McLean, VA; hybrid. Bay Area eligibility unconfirmed.
- Value chain: Downstream consumer financial services. The role owns the AI-in-experience mandate inside a large product org.
- Best at: More technology and design investment than most banks. The tech-forward reputation is real, though design influence varies sharply by org.
- Why now: Eight days fresh, but geography is unresolved. Don't spend outreach time until that clears.
- Signals: Third iteration of this search. Prior tracking shows the May-to-July-to-August sequence moving from visionary CDO-peer language to operational specificity to enablement infrastructure. That progression — aspirational, then operational, then enablement — is what a failed senior search usually looks like from outside. The committee has calibrated through failure, which means it now knows what it actually needs, and early candidates matching the revised language get outsized attention.
- Tier: Enterprise platform. Tier Playbook: Read Enterprise platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 7/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 1, Design influence 2, Trajectory 2. Role 10/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 2, AI exposure 2, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: The problem here is organizational rather than craft: how does a Director embed AI into customer experience across a matrixed bank where influence is earned rather than granted? Alibaba's mandate-building sequence maps to it — you named a structural gap nobody had named, built the research case, secured executive buy-in, ran cross-functional sprints, moved NPS 2.2 points. Most candidates lead with craft or vision. Leading with the sequence of finding the gap, building the case, and executing across functions matches what Capital One actually screens for: patience, listening before prescribing, business-language fluency, cross-functional credibility.
- Screening risk: A portfolio presentation that opens on design artifacts rather than influence mechanics gets filtered here.
- Evidence gate: Is the role open to Bay Area candidates? A geographic mismatch ends it regardless of score. Confirm before any outreach.
- Verdict: Ignore-until-trigger. Bay Area eligibility unconfirmed, and the company score (7/12) is weak on its own terms: public bank, no equity upside. The entry stays on the board because the requisition sequence is useful context for how large-company design searches evolve. Trigger: employer confirms Bay Area eligibility.
Enterprise Platform and Workflow Automation
Four Watches. Render's Agent Experience role carries the strongest role score in the cluster at 13/15 and is held back only by posting age, now 22 days. Gusto's Head of Design is a harder call: 38 days old, and design leadership there has publicly signaled a preference for people who ship over people who write strategy. Both are worth work, neither is worth Monday.
9. Nubank — Senior Staff Product Designer, Digital Assets 🆕 | Aug 27 | 2 days Same company as entry 4. Digital Assets is Nubank's crypto trading, custody, and yield product.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Public (NYSE: NU), ~8,000 employees.
- Offices: Sao Paulo HQ, US-remote design roles.
- Value chain: Downstream consumer product — crypto inside the Nubank app.
- Best at: Same as entry 4.
- Why now: Two days old. If you're going after Nubank, this is the freshest seat; raise both it and AI Private Banker in one conversation.
- Signals: Posted alongside AI Private Banker and Global Expansion.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read Growth-stage platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 9/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 2, Trajectory 3. Role 11/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 2, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: Trust boundaries around crypto. A customer who trusts Nubank with a checking account has to extend that trust to assets with an entirely different risk profile. Carrier IQ's automated coverage selection is the transferable proof: a system making consequential financial decisions in a regulated workflow and having to earn professional trust to do it. The right framing is the trust-boundary pattern in regulated finance rather than crypto expertise, because Nubank's crypto users are banking customers first.
- Screening risk: No crypto or digital assets work in the portfolio. A reviewer may filter for blockchain-native candidates before getting to the trust-design argument.
- Evidence gate: Does Digital Assets have its own design leadership and roadmap autonomy, or does this IC report into centralized design? Autonomous team: proceed. Ceiling-defined seat: hold.
- Verdict: Watch. Company 9/12, one below Act. If you pursue Nubank, lead with AI Private Banker and pick this up in the same thread.
10. Clio — Staff Product Designer, Practice Areas | ~Aug 8 | 21 days Legal practice management platform. Practice Areas is the vertical-specific surface — family law, personal injury, immigration.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Late-stage private, IPO candidate, $900M+ raised, ~1,500 employees.
- Offices: Vancouver HQ, US-remote roles.
- Value chain: Vertically integrated legal tech — case management, billing, client intake, documents. CoCounsel, the AI legal assistant, is the strategic bet.
- Best at: Dominant position in cloud-based legal practice management.
- Why now: Twenty-one days, right at the Watch justification threshold. Move this week if Clio matters to you; it may not survive the next cycle.
- Signals: Workday page shows "Posted 21 Days Ago" with applications open.
- Tier: Enterprise platform. Tier Playbook: Read Enterprise platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 8/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 2, Trajectory 2. Role 11/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 2, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: Vertical specialization without fragmentation — making a horizontal platform work for the distinct workflows of different practice types while keeping it one product. Thermo Fisher was the same structural challenge: one supply-chain platform serving six pharma partners with different compliance requirements, decomposed through 32 warehouse-floor interviews into five failure modes and five modules. That research-to-module decomposition is what vertical work requires, and it's a different skill from optimizing flows that already exist.
- Screening risk: No legal tech background. Exception-first design transfers, but a reviewer may screen for candidates who already understand trust accounting, legal billing, or court filing.
- Evidence gate: Is Practice Areas 0-to-1 or iteration on existing vertical features? 0-to-1: Thermo Fisher and the BCG DV builds are strongest. Iteration: Alibaba is the better lead.
- Verdict: Watch. Still active at 21 days. Move this week or monitor for a refresh.
11. Render — Staff Product Designer, Agent Experience | Aug 7 | 22 days Cloud platform for deploying web services. Agent Experience is a newer surface for developers deploying autonomous agents.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Series C, ~$100M raised, pre-IPO, ~150 employees.
- Offices: SF, remote-eligible.
- Value chain: Midstream cloud infrastructure between developers and compute. Agent Experience extends into agent deployment and management: what a developer needs to see while their autonomous agent runs on Render.
- Best at: Developer experience simplicity — deployment as simple as a git push.
- Why now: Extended at 22 days, but agent-experience design is a specialized mandate with a thin pool, which is why the extension is credible. Worth pursuing if agentic infrastructure is a priority domain for you.
- Signals: No evidence of a hire.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read Growth-stage platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 8/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 2, Trajectory 2. Role 13/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: Deploy, monitor, debug, intervene — the developer's view of an agent running unattended. Brand Pulse is the shipped proof: hourly health scores, source attribution, agent-written narratives, all designed around what a human watching an agent needs on screen. The five-handoff framework in the Trust essay describes how a developer's relationship with a deployed agent moves from watching every action to letting it run, which is the retention curve Render is designing for.
- Screening risk: No developer tooling or cloud infrastructure in the published portfolio. A reviewer may screen for CLI patterns and deployment mental models before reading the agentic-UX proof.
- Evidence gate: Is Agent Experience 0-to-1 or an extension of the existing dashboard? 0-to-1: BCG DV plus Agentic Labs. Extension: Alibaba platform evolution.
- Verdict: Watch. Extended with justification. Role score 13/15 is the strongest thing about it.
12. Gusto — Head of Design, Unified Service Platform | July 22 | 38 days Payroll, benefits, and HR platform for SMBs. Unified Service Platform is a consolidation mandate.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Late-stage private, valued at $10B+, IPO candidate, ~2,500 employees.
- Offices: SF, Denver, NYC. Hybrid.
- Value chain: Vertically integrated SMB platform — payroll, benefits, time tracking, HR in one product.
- Best at: Making employer compliance feel simple to people who don't have an HR department.
- Why now: Thirty-eight days. Head of Design searches at this scale usually run 8–12 weeks, so the search is probably live, but the committee has likely worked through two or three slates and calibrated. Monitor for a repost.
- Signals: No evidence of hire or pause. Comp: $240K–$280K.
- Tier: Enterprise platform. Tier Playbook: Read Enterprise platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 9/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 3, Trajectory 2. Role 11/15 — Comp 2, Scope 3, Craft 2, AI exposure 2, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: Systems consolidation without breaking the customers who depend on each piece. American Red Cross: six legacy systems into one platform serving three roles, national deployment in six months, $847K disbursed under live operational pressure, surge architecture absorbing 10x volume with zero retraining. Multi-system consolidation with zero-retraining deployment is what the role describes, and you've done it at national scale where failure meant someone didn't get relief money.
- Screening risk: Gusto's design leadership has stated a preference for production proximity over strategic frameworks — Thibodeau wrote publicly that someone working exclusively in frameworks or strategy documents wasn't a fit, and Gusto then pushed every designer to ship PRs. A portfolio that leads with strategy and no shipped production work gets cut. Put the Agentic Labs deployments and Thermo Fisher's 12-month build-to-launch early.
- Evidence gate: Is the evaluation cycle still running at 38 days, or has it stalled? Running: proceed, with the caveat that the committee has calibrated. Stalled: hold for repost.
- Verdict: Watch. Extended. Company 9/12, one below Act.
Marketplace Growth and Consumer Activation
Four roles at two companies, both scoring 6/12 on the company rubric — DoorDash is public with no equity upside, Flex is Series A with almost no AI centrality. They qualify for Watch on role score alone. What's actually interesting here is the clusters: DoorDash posted five Staff roles on Aug 26, and Flex has three inside a two-week window. Clusters that size frequently precede a design leadership hire. Watch for a Director+ posting at either company.
13. DoorDash — Staff Product Designer, Dasher Growth 🆕 | Aug 26 | 3 days | SF/Sunnyvale/NYC hybrid Public marketplace and logistics platform. Dasher Growth owns courier supply, retention, and financial products (Crimson).
- Stage / Size / Capital: Public (NYSE: DASH), ~31,400 employees.
- Offices: SF, Sunnyvale, NYC, Seattle.
- Value chain: Downstream three-sided marketplace. This role sits on the courier supply side.
- Best at: Logistics-at-scale product design — last-mile UX problems most marketplace companies never encounter.
- Why now: Three days old, but the cluster is the thing to track. A Director+ posting following within two to four weeks would change the calculation.
- Signals: Five Staff roles posted simultaneously (Dasher Growth, Merchant Marketing, Integrity, Support, SevenRooms). Only Dasher Growth and Merchant Marketing are Bay-eligible. All five emphasize production code contribution.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read Growth-stage platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 6/12 — AI centrality 1, Stage/equity 1, Design influence 2, Trajectory 2. Role 10/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 1, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: Allē's 3.2× redemption lift and $42 CAC are activation-to-habit conversion at 30M-member scale, which is the Dasher Growth mandate. Carrier IQ supplies financial-product trust architecture for the Crimson side. Activation metrics and financial-product trust proof in one candidate is uncommon; growth designers usually have the first without the second.
- Screening risk: The posting explicitly requires "contributing meaningfully to the codebase." Agentic Labs demonstrates code capability, but solo-built rather than inside a commercial repo.
- Evidence gate: Does "contributing meaningfully to the codebase" mean shipping production features alongside engineers, or does building and maintaining live applications count? The former is a hard gap. The latter is fine.
- Verdict: Watch. Company 6/12 is weak. Track the cluster for a Director+ posting.
14. DoorDash — Staff Product Designer, Merchant Marketing 🆕 | Aug 26 | 3 days | SF/Sunnyvale/Seattle/NYC hybrid Same company. Merchant Marketing owns campaign creation and marketing tooling for restaurants reaching 40M+ consumers.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Same as entry 13.
- Value chain: Midstream marketing tooling connecting merchants to consumers.
- Why now: Same cluster signal as entry 13.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform.
- Rubric: Company 6/12. Role 10/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 1, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: Alibaba's supplier-side work is the match: 200K+ small businesses running their operation through a marketplace, +20% daily transactions. Brand Pulse adds automated market-signal interpretation. Merchant-side marketplace proof with transaction outcomes attached is scarce; most growth designers bring consumer-side metrics.
- Screening risk: Same production-code requirement as entry 13, plus a request for ads-manager and experimentation platform experience that Brand Pulse doesn't cover.
- Evidence gate: Same as entry 13.
- Verdict: Watch. If you pursue DoorDash, Dasher Growth is the better match — Allē's activation metrics land harder than Alibaba's platform metrics on a marketing-tooling role.
15. Flex — Staff Product Designer, Consumer | Aug 22 | 7 days | SF/NYC/SLC hybrid Fintech letting renters split rent across the month. The Consumer role owns payment experience, experiments, recovery states, and financial-pressure moments.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Private, Series A, 251–500 employees. Processing ~$2B/month for 1.5M customers.
- Offices: NYC HQ, SF, SLC.
- Value chain: Downstream consumer fintech between renters and landlords, extending short-term credit for rent.
- Best at: Scale relative to stage. $2B a month at Series A means the product-market fit is real.
- Why now: Seven days old, three roles in a two-week window. Watch for a Director+ posting.
- Signals: Comp: $200K–$250K base plus equity.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read Growth-stage platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 6/12 — AI centrality 1, Stage/equity 1, Design influence 2, Trajectory 2. Role 10/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 1, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: Allē's dual surface across 30M members and the 3.2× redemption lift are consumer financial behavior at scale. The structural pattern transfers; the regulatory surface doesn't. Rent-payment credit risk and disclosure requirements are a different problem from loyalty redemption, and you should say so before an interviewer does.
- Screening risk: The posting asks for substantial consumer mobile work and experimentation fluency. Your portfolio opens B2B. Allē and Equinox+ are consumer, but neither is fintech with credit-risk UX.
- Evidence gate: Does Flex's design function shape product strategy or execute PM-defined specs? Shapes product: proceed. Delivery function: the influence ceiling is too low to be worth the equity risk.
- Verdict: Watch. Company 6/12, minimal AI exposure, Series A execution risk. The cluster and the $2B monthly volume are what keep it on the board.
16. Flex — Staff Product Designer, B2B | Aug 22 | 7 days | SF/NYC/SLC hybrid Same company. The B2B role owns the property-management platform — reconciliation, multi-team workflows, dense financial operations.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Same as entry 15.
- Value chain: Midstream B2B platform connecting Flex to property managers.
- Why now: Same cluster signal as entry 15.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform.
- Rubric: Company 6/12. Role 10/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 1, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: Thermo Fisher mySupply solved the same shape: multi-stakeholder enterprise platform, exception-first design (197 orders, surface the three that matter), $20M margin, 100% partner adoption. Property management reconciliation is a lighter-regulation version of the same problem, and exception-first design for professional operators is what you've done repeatedly.
- Screening risk: The role wants property-management and accounting workflow depth. Thermo Fisher transfers structurally, but a reviewer may screen for direct property-tech experience.
- Evidence gate: Does the B2B roadmap include AI-assisted reconciliation or automated exception routing? If yes, Trust essay and Carrier IQ come into play and the role's AI exposure score improves. If it's team tooling only, AI exposure stays at 1.
- Verdict: Watch. Same company limitations as entry 15. Of the two Flex roles, B2B is the better portfolio fit.

Discovery leads without qualifying ATS records: Vitalize (hospital capacity AI), Instrumentl (grant OS), Boulevard (Series D salon/spa platform), Outsmart ($38M raised, title conflict). Each needs a live canonical employer posting before it can enter the board.
- Vanta's September 10 event: CPO Jeremy Epling is expected to introduce custom agents, skills, and end-to-end workflows at Vanta Delivers, which will reveal whether the Director's AI workflow builder is a headline product bet or a feature within a broader platform push.
- Nubank's CDO operating model: Ethan Eismann describes his approach to direction, judgment, and AI-augmented design leadership in a first-person account on his site that doubles as preparation material for the asynchronous portfolio review he conducts on senior design candidates.
- Gray Swan's NIST partnership: NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation published a detailed account of the large-scale indirect-prompt-injection competition that Gray Swan co-led with frontier labs, which establishes the company's position in the AI safety evaluation space beyond its own marketing claims.
- Nu's Q2 financial scale: The SEC-filed quarterly results showing 138.9 million customers, $5.9B revenue, and $1.06B net income provide the authoritative scale context for calibrating whether a Senior Design Manager seat at Nubank carries more product consequence than a Director title at a smaller company.
