Three clusters this cycle, grouped by what makes each set urgent right now.
The first cluster covers companies hiring someone to design how humans supervise agents. That's where your forward-looking artifacts create the widest separation from the field. The second covers two mandates that are about changing how a design org works with AI rather than designing AI products, which changes what the interview panel is screening for. The third is four windows at or past their decay thresholds, each needing a keep-or-release decision before Friday.
Agent Supervision Surfaces
Four roles across three companies. The design problem is the one your Trust essay frames: where does the human review, correct, or override an agent acting on their behalf? Carrier IQ's provenance work, your correction-loop thinking, and the agent-trace experience from TinyFish give you separation here that a portfolio-only candidate can't manufacture.
1. OpenAI. Builds and deploys frontier AI models and the consumer and developer products that distribute them.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Private, ~3,500 employees, $40B+ raised, $300B+ valuation.
- Offices: San Francisco HQ. SF-based candidates preferred.
- Value chain: Upstream model provider expanding into the midstream product layer. Design scope touches both the capability surface and the interaction surface.
- Best at: Shipping AI capabilities to consumers faster than any competitor, then iterating the interaction model in production.
- Signals: Product Design Lead, Growth–Codex posted August 18. Signal age: 11 days. Hot window. Silber's August 16 podcast laid out his evaluation criteria two days before the posting went live. High confidence that the podcast is a closer description of the actual job than the requisition text.
- Tier: AI-native. Tier Playbook: Read AI-native playbook before outreach.
- Rubric scores: Company 11/12 — AI centrality 3, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 3, Trajectory 3. Role 15/15 — Total comp 3 ($347K–$405K), Scope 3, Craft depth 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: Silber's stated criterion is anti-additive: reuse existing systems, extend rather than build, decline to ship when the thing isn't needed. Carrier IQ fits because the provenance layer you designed extended an existing quoting workflow instead of replacing it. The proof point to lead with is the decision gate architecture — when the system surfaces its reasoning versus when it acts silently. You've answered that question in shipped software, which is rarer in this applicant pool than it should be.
- Verdict: Act. Seek a warm introduction to the Growth-Codex mandate owner. What you need from that conversation is the geometry of the seat: manager of ICs, or senior IC with strategic scope? Silber's "just do less" philosophy points toward IC, but the posting language is ambiguous. Clarify before you invest in a full application. Window: 10 days remaining in the hot zone.
2. Stripe. Payments infrastructure for internet businesses, processing hundreds of billions in annual volume across 50+ countries.
Three roles tracked. Same company scores, three different mandates, three different portfolio matches. Priority order: Data & AI first, Risk second, Link third.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Private (pre-IPO), ~10,000 employees, ~$95B valuation. The equity window is the headline here.
- Offices: San Francisco HQ, Seattle, New York, Dublin, Singapore. SF roles confirmed.
- Value chain: Core payments infrastructure expanding into a financial services platform. Design scope ranges from API-adjacent developer tools to end-user financial dashboards.
- Best at: Building financial infrastructure developers will trust with real money, which sets an unusually high craft bar on error and edge-case states.
- Tier: Enterprise platform. Tier Playbook: Read Enterprise platform playbook before outreach.
Role A: Senior Staff Product Designer, Data & AI.
- Signals: Published August 15; 14 days old and hot. Base range $228,300–$342,500 plus equity and bonus. A syndicated version shows $251K–$376K. Treat the Stripe direct page as authoritative; the delta is most likely a syndication artifact, moderate confidence.
- Rubric scores: Company 11/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 3, Design influence 3, Trajectory 3. Role 15/15 — Total comp 3, Scope 3, Craft depth 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: The Data & AI mandate covers Radar, Sigma, Revenue Recognition — making Stripe's own data products intelligent. The hard part is surfacing model confidence to merchants who then make financial decisions on what the system shows them. Brand Pulse maps directly: how you show a user what an AI is tracking and how sure it is. Your differentiator is that you've designed the uncertain state in production, not just the confident one, and uncertainty display is the part of this role most candidates will only be able to discuss hypothetically.
- Verdict: Act. Apply directly and name the Data & AI mandate. Lead with forward-looking artifacts on inference-aware UX.
Role B: Senior Staff Product Designer, Risk.
- Signals: Published August 10; 19 days old and hot. $228,300–$342,500 plus equity. Crosses into Watch on September 1.
- Rubric scores: Role 14/15 — Total comp 3, Scope 3, Craft depth 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: Risk at Stripe means fraud detection, dispute resolution, compliance — the system acts and the merchant absorbs the outcome. Three parties, not two: Stripe's model flags, the merchant responds, the cardholder is affected, and nobody can review every action. That structure is the same one covered in the Headway battlecard. Lead with Carrier IQ's decision gates and the Watch–Verify–Delegate ladder from the Trust essay, translated into financial consequence. You've built this trust boundary in shipped software. Most candidates will only be able to discuss it.
- Verdict: Act. Apply alongside Data & AI, but write the cover letters separately. Risk evaluates for consequence design. Data & AI evaluates for intelligence surfacing.
Role C: Staff Product Designer, Link. Link is Stripe's consumer-facing identity and checkout product. Published August 10; 19 days old and hot. $210,400–$315,600 plus possible equity. Role 13/15 — Total comp 3, Scope 2, Craft depth 3, AI exposure 2, Portfolio value 3. Verdict: Watch. Apply only after Data & AI and Risk. The Stripe equity story carries all three, but Link's thinner AI exposure means the work won't build the portfolio you're trying to build. If a Stripe recruiter asks whether you'd consider Link alongside the others, say yes. Don't lead with it. Tier Playbook: Read Enterprise platform playbook before outreach.
3. Headway. Marketplace connecting therapists with insurance networks by handling credentialing, billing, and matching.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Series C, ~$6B valuation, ~800 employees.
- Offices: New York HQ, remote-friendly for US-based roles.
- Value chain: Downstream marketplace in healthcare. Design scope covers provider-facing tools, patient matching, and the trust surfaces where AI-driven recommendations affect clinical access.
- Best at: Solving the insurance-credentialing problem that keeps therapists out of network.
- Signals: Three provider-side design roles clustered within two weeks, as covered in Issue #8. Senior/Staff Product Designer — Provider posted August 14; 15 days old, still hot, hits the Watch threshold in 6 days.
- Tier: Healthcare/Regulated. Tier Playbook: Read Healthcare/Regulated playbook before outreach.
- Rubric scores: Company 11/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 3, Design influence 3, Trajectory 3. Role 14/15 — Total comp 2 ($212K–$265K + equity), Scope 3, Craft depth 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: Headway is the cleanest three-party case in your whole target set. The platform recommends, the therapist acts, the patient carries the consequence, and reviewing each action individually stops being possible at any real scale. Carrier IQ proves you've designed gates for exactly that condition — the agent acts before a human can look at it. For Headway specifically, add Thermo Fisher mySupply (Product Design Director, BCG Digital Ventures): six pharma partners, 100% adoption, regulated domain, multiple stakeholders who each had to trust the same system. Roland Tiangco and Ellen Dong screen for regulated-domain proof, and most agentic-AI candidates don't have any.
- Verdict: Act. Contact Roland Tiangco with a provider-trust angle. Lead with the three-party framing from the Trust essay, grounded in Thermo Fisher. The cluster suggests a design-org build is underway, so ask about reporting structure and whether a leadership seat is being created above Staff. Window: 6 days before the cluster signal starts decaying.
Org Transformation Mandates
Two companies where the evaluation surface shifts. These roles screen for organizational navigation, change management, and whether you can install a new way of working without breaking trust. Craft bar is assumed. The question in the room is whether you can move a several-hundred-person org.
4. Vanta. Automated security and compliance platform (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA) that continuously monitors and certifies an organization's trust posture.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Series C, ~$10B valuation, ~600 employees, $350M+ raised.
- Offices: San Francisco HQ, remote US.
- Value chain: Midstream compliance infrastructure, sitting between the security tools companies already run and the auditors who certify them.
- Best at: Turning compliance from a periodic audit into a continuous automated signal.
- Signals: Director of Product Design posted August 25 — 4 days old, deep in the hot window. The Head of Design posting from July 6 (54 days) is still live alongside it. A Vanta employee reposted the Head search roughly three weeks ago, which confirms the recruiting effort is active rather than dormant.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read Growth-stage platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric scores: Company 11/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 3, Design influence 3, Trajectory 3. Role 14/15 — Total comp 3 ($275K–$323K + equity), Scope 3, Craft depth 2, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: The Director role is an org-transformation mandate wrapped in a compliance product. The work is making a design team operate differently because the product is becoming agentic. Alibaba.com is the match: you named a structural gap nobody had named, built the mandate around it, and ran cross-functional sprints that changed how the org worked. The number that carries it is +20% daily transactions, achieved through organizational redesign rather than a redesign of screens. The AI-design candidates who apply here will lead with craft artifacts, and this committee needs an operating model.
- Verdict: Act, but resolve the reporting line before you apply. A 54-day-old Head of Design search running next to a four-day-old Director posting is ambiguous. If a Head lands soon, the Director reports into them with a defined ceiling. If the Head search has stalled, the Director may have runway to CPO Jeremy Epling. Ask this in the first conversation: "Is the Head of Design role filled or in final stages?" The answer tells you whether this is a build-the-function seat or a manage-within-function seat. Move this week regardless.
5. Capital One. One of the largest US banks, with a technology-forward reputation and a design organization of several hundred.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Public (NYSE: COF), ~55,000 employees, $60B+ revenue.
- Offices: McLean VA HQ, Richmond, New York, San Francisco, Plano TX. SF presence confirmed.
- Value chain: Downstream financial services. Design sits inside a technology organization large enough to have its own internal platform politics.
- Best at: Running one of the more mature design organizations in financial services. Whether that maturity now functions as rigidity is the thing to test in interviews.
- Signals: The AI-in-Experience-Design Director search (R249772) was analyzed in Issue #8 as a reset: the requisition language moved from visionary CDO peer toward enablement infrastructure. That shift works in your favor. The renewed requisition shows 7 days old on the current Workday page. Hot window.
- Tier: Enterprise platform. Tier Playbook: Read Enterprise platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric scores: Company 8/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 1, Design influence 3, Trajectory 2. Role 14/15 — Total comp 3 ($251K–$287K + possible incentives), Scope 3, Craft depth 2, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: The reset language asks for someone who builds the infrastructure that lets other design leaders shape product direction. Your Trust essay works here as something a design org can adopt and run, not as a point of view. The specific proof: you wrote the five-handoffs model and then built Agentic Labs on top of it. Candidates at this level tend to arrive with frameworks or with production work. You have both, and they're connected.
- Verdict: Watch. Company score of 8/12 clears Watch but not Act, which needs 10+ on the company side. The reset opens a real window and the signal is hot at 7 days, but public-company equity caps the upside that makes the other Act targets worth your week. If you have bandwidth left after them, draft outreach. Otherwise hold. Trigger for upgrade: a new posting or recruiter activity on LinkedIn that names the AI-in-XD mandate specifically.
Expiring Windows
Four targets where the signal is aging out. Each gets a keep-or-release call.
Midjourney: last outreach attempt by September 2, Ignore-until-trigger on September 5. Gusto: reach out before Wednesday September 3, or release. Stripe Risk and Link: hot → Watch on September 1.
6. Midjourney. Generative image and video platform, profitable, ~200 employees, no outside funding.
- Signals: The Design Lead posting is 36 days old. Banu Guler's last public hiring signal was her July 24 announcement, also 36 days back. No new design postings and nothing public from Guler in 30 days.
- Tier: AI-native. Tier Playbook: Read AI-native playbook before outreach.
- Rubric scores: Company 11/12 — AI centrality 3, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 3, Trajectory 3. Role 15/15 — Total comp 3 ($285K–$350K), Scope 3, Craft depth 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio value 3.
- Portfolio match: Guler is building the design org from scratch and hasn't settled what "good" means yet, which makes her receptive to a candidate who arrives with a way to think about the problem. Your artifacts on intent-based interaction land on Midjourney's actual product question: users want to describe an outcome, not compose a prompt.
- Verdict: Watch, with a final outreach attempt by September 2, then release. The posting crosses the 43-day Ignore threshold on September 5. If you haven't contacted Guler, send one message this week referencing the July 24 announcement and the intent-based interaction work. No response by September 5, move to Ignore-until-trigger. Trigger for re-entry: any new Guler post, or a fresh design requisition on the Ashby board.
7. Gusto. Payroll, benefits, and HR platform for small businesses, serving 300,000+ companies.
- Signals: Head of Design, Unified Service Platform, $204K–$280K depending on location. Tracked since Issue #7 across multiple cycles with no repost, no language change, no recruiter activity detected. Posting is 38 days old, inside the 42-day Watch window, crossing into Ignore on September 3.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read Growth-stage platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric scores: Company 9/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 3, Trajectory 2. Role 11/15 — Total comp 2, Scope 3, Craft depth 2, AI exposure 2, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: Function-building inside a mature product company. Thibodeau has publicly rejected candidates who work only in frameworks and strategy documents, so production proximity has to be the first thing she sees from you. Allē carries that: 30M members, 3.2× redemption, dual-surface redesign, done as Product Design Director at BCG Digital Ventures, in a product where the money is real.
- Verdict: Watch, final window. 38 days old and crossing the 42-day threshold September 3. If you intend to reach out, do it before Wednesday. Absent a repost, a language change, or recruiter activity by then, this drops to Ignore-until-trigger next cycle. Trigger for re-entry: repost with new language, a "still hiring" post from the recruiter or hiring manager, or a fresh requisition number.
8. Babylist. Registry and commerce platform for new and expecting parents, Series D.
- Signals: Director, Product Design — AI Builder posted August 3; 26 days old, Watch window. LinkedIn shows 200+ applicants. The role reports to a "VP, Head of Product Design and Research" whose identity isn't publicly resolved. Staff and Senior Product Designer "AI Builder" roles are posted at the same time, so there's a cluster here.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read Growth-stage platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric scores: Company 8/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 2, Trajectory 2. Role 10/15 — Total comp 2, Scope 2, Craft depth 2, AI exposure 2, Portfolio value 2.
- Portfolio match: "AI Builder" reads like they want someone who ships AI features fast. Equinox+ answers that — 0 to MVP in 3 months across 5 brands, 4.8 stars, Product Design Director at BCG Digital Ventures. For Babylist specifically, Allē's dual-surface work is closer: recommendation and personalization surfaces in a category where the user is deciding on behalf of someone vulnerable and has low tolerance for a wrong suggestion.
- Verdict: Watch, and the unresolved buyer identity is a blocker. You can't position without knowing who the VP is, or whether "AI Builder" means product ambition or tooling fluency. Issue #7 flagged this and it hasn't moved. Message Danica B. in Talent Acquisition with a short expression of interest and one question: who leads Product Design & Research? The answer determines whether you can position at all.
9. Coinbase. Cryptocurrency exchange and financial services platform, publicly traded (NASDAQ: COIN).
- Signals: Staff Product Designer, Experience & Engagement is the founding design hire for the CX product team covering Help Center, Chatbot, Voicebot, escalation, and Concierge. Posted August 5; 24 days old, Watch window. Andy Montgomery, VP of Design for Consumer Products and roughly 18 months in seat, is the closest identified design executive. A second role, Staff Product Designer, Financial Services Lead, covering Coinbase One membership, card, and loyalty at $207K–$244K, clears Watch on role score (11/15) but the AI exposure is too thin to buy outreach time ahead of the Act targets.
- Tier: Enterprise platform. Tier Playbook: Read Enterprise platform playbook before outreach.
- Rubric scores: Company 8/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 1, Design influence 3, Trajectory 2. Role (Experience & Engagement) 11/15 — Total comp 2, Scope 3, Craft depth 3, AI exposure 2, Portfolio value 1.
- Portfolio match: This is a chatbot and voicebot mandate in a financial context. The supervision handoffs in your Trust essay apply to one narrow question: when does the bot escalate to a person versus act on a customer's account by itself? Carrier IQ's provenance architecture covers the auditability side. But portfolio value is the problem — a Coinbase support-chat case study does less for junochen.com than a Stripe or OpenAI case would, and portfolio value is why you're running this search.
- Verdict: Watch, deprioritized below every Act target. Company score of 8/12 clears Watch. The role clears on scope and craft depth, the AI exposure is chatbot-adjacent, and Montgomery's 18 months in seat means the new-executive window closed long ago. Trigger for upgrade: a Director+ design posting under Montgomery, or a product shift that pushes AI past support tooling.
Window Status Changes
Upgraded this cycle:
- Vanta Director: new entry → Act (4-day-old posting, hot window).
Stable:
- OpenAI Growth-Codex: Act (11 days, still hot).
- Stripe Data & AI: Act (14 days, still hot).
- Stripe Risk: Act (19 days, approaching Watch threshold September 1).
- Headway Staff: Act (15 days, approaching Watch threshold in 6 days).
Expiring (crossing decay threshold within 7 days):
- Stripe Link and Risk: hot → Watch on September 1.
- Gusto Head of Design: Watch → Ignore-until-trigger on September 3 unless a refresh signal appears.
- Midjourney Design Lead: Watch → Ignore-until-trigger on September 5 unless you make contact by September 2.
Downgrade candidates next cycle:
- Babylist Director: stays Watch, but 200+ applicants and an unresolved buyer cut expected conversion. Downgrades if the buyer isn't identified by next cycle.
- Coinbase Experience & Engagement: Watch, deprioritized.
- Gray Swan's Staff role: A three-day-old Staff Product Designer posting at this AI-security company is the most direct current match to your trust, evaluation, and human-control thesis — but Series A stage and a live coding exercise are material filters to assess before pursuing.
- Within's enterprise AI seat: A Staff Product Designer role at this Series B company scores 15/15 on the role rubric with $250K–$313K comp and 7× reported growth, though the requirement to bring designs into code is a real technical screen.
- Hightouch's agent-tools mandate: The Staff Product Designer, AI Creative Tools role builds 0→1 tools for AI agents making real-time marketing decisions, but compensation is undisclosed and formal level is unstated — verify both before committing outreach effort.
- Superhuman's education agents: Following its acquisition of GPTZero, Superhuman posted a Staff Product Designer role leading agent configuration, data management, and model-choice controls for a new education vertical — a strong human-agent system design match if the organizational geometry between education, Grammarly, and GPTZero teams becomes clearer.
