# The Hysteresis

> The Hysteresis exists to give a small cross-functional team — strategy, investment, and procurement — a shared weekly instrument for reading the battery supply chain earlier than consensus. Success means the team consistently identifies inflection points in cell pricing, supplier health, and policy enforcement weeks or months before they surface in earnings calls, annual surveys, or trade press. The commercial mechanism is internal-first: the publication proves itself as a decision tool inside the organization, then extends to paid subscribers and a practitioner community as upside. Revenue follows utility — if the team makes better-timed procurement calls and competitive assessments because of what they read here, the publication earned its place.

## Issue 7 — Signal

The numbers, their velocity, and what moves next

### Weekly Price Stack

Two upstream inputs moved meaningfully this week. Everything downstream held. Lithium carbonate's weekly decline is now accelerating for the third straight week, with spodumene falling in parallel at nearly the same rate. Cell prices across all ESS and EV applications registered flat or sub-1% noise in both InfoLink's Tuesday assessment and SMM's Thursday table.

The second derivatives are pulling apart. Upstream costs are falling faster while the cell and system layer absorbs none of it. Six flat-to-noise downstream readings against two accelerating upstream declines: that widening pass-through gap is the operative signal for anyone timing a procurement lock or marking a model to market this quarter. Cell makers are pocketing margin, not passing through. The question is how long buyers let them.

▼ Meaningful WoW change. InfoLink July 22: RMB 141,000/MT average (139,000–143,000 range), down 7.2% WoW. Third consecutive acceleration: −2.6% (July 8), −5.0% (July 15), −7.2% now. SMM July 24 confirms continued drift. Downstream buying hand-to-mouth only.

▼ Meaningful WoW change. InfoLink July 22: $2,050/MT average ($2,000–$2,100 range), down 6.8% WoW. Tracking lithium carbonate in lockstep, pointing to supply-side repricing rather than isolated demand destruction. No secondary source available at this assessment date.

◆ Flat. InfoLink July 22: RMB 0.370/Wh, flat WoW. SMM July 24: $0.0475/Wh, +$0.0003 day-over-day. That SMM tick is sub-noise. Early-July cell softening has arrested even as lithium keeps falling underneath it.

◆ Flat. InfoLink July 22: RMB 0.370/Wh, flat WoW. SMM July 24: $0.0478/Wh, flat. SMM's 314 Ah ESS Index at $0.0471/Wh shows −$0.0001 day-over-day, which is sub-noise. Both formats have converged to the same InfoLink average.

◆ Flat. InfoLink July 22: RMB 0.50/Wh, flat WoW. This level has held since at least early July through cell moves in both directions. Non-cell costs (PCS, thermal management, fire suppression, EMS, warranty provisions) limit system-price sensitivity to raw-material swings.

~ Noise. SMM July 24: 100 Ah and 174 Ah formats both at $0.0515/Wh average, each +$0.0002 day-over-day. Cumulative drift of roughly +1.2% over two weeks from the July 10 baseline of $0.0509/Wh. Not a reversal signal.

◆ Flat. SMM July 24: 5-series (50–60 Ah) at $0.081/Wh, flat. 6-series (144 Ah) at $0.0806/Wh, +$0.0003 day-over-day, within noise. NMC holds a ~57% premium over LFP at China domestic spot.

Tag: ESS Stack

◆ Flat. SMM July 24: $0.0563/Wh average ($0.0538–$0.0589 range), flat. Sits above naked ESS cells but below InfoLink's DC-side containerized system price, capturing partial integration cost. Mirrors the broader downstream stillness.

### Velocity Synthesis

- [The Pass-Through Trap](<https://anchor.is/the-hysteresis/issue/7/signal/article/33087/markdown>) — By [Elise Huan-Cartwright](<https://anchor.is/the-hysteresis/team/53/markdown>) · Published 2026-07-24 · Format: The Velocity Synthesis

Lithium carbonate posted its sharpest weekly decline of 2026 and LFP ESS cells registered zero pass-through. SMM's 280 Ah format ticked up. Three consecutive weeks of this pattern now have a mechanism: iron phosphate rose ~40% in H1, cathode processing fees increase August 1, and Q2 absorption tightened. The cost stack decoupled from its most-watched input sometime in H1, and any cell-price model still running lithium as the primary variable is already broken. Buyers planning to lever the carbonate decline into procurement concessions will find the other side of the table unmoved.

### The Non-Lithium Floor

- [The LFP Cost Floor That Lithium Indexation Misses](<https://anchor.is/the-hysteresis/issue/7/signal/article/33086/markdown>) — By [Elise Huan-Cartwright](<https://anchor.is/the-hysteresis/team/53/markdown>) · Published 2026-07-24

Iron phosphate rose from approximately RMB 10,000/MT at year-end 2025 to [RMB 14,500–15,000/MT by mid-July](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104002063-smm-mid-year-market-analysis-2026-h1-lfp-cathode-material-market-review), per SMM's H1 LFP cathode review (July 13) and Hunan Yuneng's own client letter ([SMM, July 16](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104008673-smm-lithium-battery-lfp-market-leader-announces-price-increase-all-series-to-raise-by-2000-yuanmt-from-august-1)). The driver is sulfur, not lithium. Hunan Yuneng states iron phosphate now accounts for over 70% of LFP processing fees and announced a +RMB 2,000/MT processing fee increase across all LFP product series effective August 1.
