Lab The Docket A weekly guide to living in a climate-changed world

The Docket translates climate change from abstract crisis into visceral lived experience through literary journalism that makes readers feel the weight, absurdity, grief, and possibility of our planetary moment. To help readers understand how to live—not just survive—in a world already transformed by climate change, moving beyond prevention debates to illuminate the reality of adaptation, resilience, and human experience on a warming planet. Lab is where The Docket breaks its own rules. This is the experimental space for formats, voices, structures, and approaches that would get rejected anywhere else—including the rest of The Docket. If it feels safe, polished, or like something you've seen before, it doesn't belong here. Lab content is explicitly permitted—encouraged—to fail spectacularly. Experiments that make some readers uncomfortable, confused, or angry are often the most valuable. Writers and editors should pursue ideas that feel risky, half-formed, or potentially ridiculous. The only unacceptable failure is playing it safe. If your piece could run in The Atlantic, The New York Times, or even in another Docket section without anyone blinking, kill it and start over. Experimental doesn't mean "weird for weird's sake" or "hard to read." It means finding new ways to make climate reality land in readers' bodies and brains. It means structural innovation that serves emotional truth. It means making formal choices that conventional editors would cut. Some experiments will be quietly radical (a piece about sea level rise written entirely without the letter 'e'). Some will be loudly strange (climate horror fiction formatted as a mortgage application). Some will break genre entirely (is this journalism? fiction? poetry? yes). The through-line: readers should finish Lab pieces thinking "I didn't know you could do that" or "I've never felt climate change this way before." Every Lab piece must do at least one thing that would get it rejected from a traditional publication. If you can't identify what that thing is, you're not pushing hard enough. Lab content must still serve The Docket's core mission: making climate reality visceral and lived. Experimentation isn't an excuse for self-indulgence—formal innovation must serve emotional or intellectual truth about living in a climate-changed world. No climate denial, no false balance, no rehashing settled science. We break format rules, not factual integrity. Quarterly review looks for: Did this experiment reveal new possibilities? Did it fail in an interesting way that taught us something? Did readers respond with confusion, delight, anger, or something we didn't anticipate? Did it make the editorial team uncomfortable? Success is measured by innovation and learning, not clicks. A piece that bombs with readers but shows us a new technique is more valuable than a conventional piece that performs well. Successful experiments migrate to regular sections when: (1) the format proves replicable and sustainable, (2) reader response suggests an appetite for more, (3) the innovation can be systematized without losing its power. Most Lab experiments should NOT migrate—they should remain singular provocations that expand what's possible. Lab content doesn't have a single voice—it has permission to try any voice that serves its purpose. Second person? Fine. Present tense stream of consciousness? Try it. Fragmented syntax that mimics climate anxiety? Go for it. Deadpan bureaucratic language that makes horror worse? Absolutely. Format is content. The way a piece looks on the page, how it uses white space, whether it has footnotes or strike-throughs or section breaks—these aren't decorative choices, they're storytelling tools. Use them. Genre is a suggestion, not a law. Mix journalism with fiction. Blend memoir with speculative writing. Create pieces that refuse categorization. The best Lab content exists in the spaces between established forms. Discomfort is data. If your experiment makes you uncomfortable to publish, that's often a sign you're onto something. Obviously stay within ethical bounds and factual accuracy, but emotional discomfort—for you, for readers, for the editorial team—is often where the most valuable work lives. Lab is not a dumping ground for conventional pieces that don't fit elsewhere. If it's a well-reported, traditionally structured feature, it belongs in another section. Lab is not "quirky" or "playful" climate content. Playfulness is fine if it serves a purpose, but experimentation isn't about being cute or clever—it's about finding new ways to make people feel climate reality. Lab is not where you explain the experiment. If your piece needs a lengthy editor's note explaining what you were trying to do, the experiment failed. The work should speak for itself, even if it speaks strangely. Lab is not license to abandon rigor. Experimental form requires even MORE discipline than conventional journalism, not less. Every weird choice must be defensible. Editors should greenlight Lab experiments that make them nervous. If a pitch feels too risky, too weird, or too likely to fail, that's often the right choice. The editorial question isn't "will this work?" but "will we learn something valuable if it doesn't?" Kill pieces that feel safe. Champion pieces that feel dangerous. Push writers past their first experimental idea to their third or fourth, where the real innovation lives. The goal is to publish things that make other publications say "we could never do that" and make our own team say "I can't believe we did that." What if you wrote about wildfire season using only insurance documents and their footnotes? What if a piece about climate migration was structured as a choose-your-own-adventure where all paths lead to loss? What if you explained drought through a dating profile for a dying river? What if you covered a heat wave entirely through what people DON'T say—all the conversations that stop mid-sentence? What if you wrote climate horror that was scarier for what it didn't mention than what it did? What if you told a flood story backwards, starting with the insurance settlement and ending with the weather forecast no one believed? These are provocations, not prescriptions. Your experiments should be weirder than these.
