They respond to content that surprises them, that treats them as capable of handling uncomfortable material, and that gives them something concrete to say to someone else afterward. They are not politically sophisticated — they do not know the difference between TPS and 287(g) — but they are intelligent adults who can follow an argument when given adequate context within the argument itself. The reader walks away with real content — specific arguments, framings, human cases, and examples — that they voluntarily bring to informal conversation with coworkers, friends, or family. They can articulate what each side actually believes and why, and they have begun forming their own position not because they were guided to it but because the collision of the two perspectives made neutrality feel untenable. The underlying stake: a person who previously had no framework for thinking about border politics now has two competing frameworks and the internal pressure to choose between them or explain why they won't. The facts are shared; the interpretation diverges completely. When both voices address the same raid, crossing, or ruling, the factual substrate must be consistent — the same people, the same dates, the same operational details — so the reader can see that the disagreement is about meaning, not about what happened. Each voice should draw on the intellectual and evidentiary traditions that support its position.
