Sweep of current job boards at Cursor, Replit, Perplexity, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Signal type: which function owns trust-related decisions about the user experience. Source set: Ashby, Greenhouse, company career pages, company blogs, design community directories, and press coverage through June 29, 2026.
The finding: At all five companies, product managers and engineers are making trust-design decisions in roles that explicitly claim UX ownership. Design teams exist at all five. None of them hold authority over trust.
This changes who you contact and what you say.
Pattern 1: Product managers hold the trust mandate
This is the pattern that rewrites your outreach list.
At Cursor, the PM, Agent Harness owns how developers observe, steer, and intervene when agents fail. The PM, Cloud Agents owns reviewability, logs, developer handoff — and uses the phrase "designing the experience." Both are trust-design mandates staffed as product management.
At Anthropic, PM Safeguards claims full ownership of "design, development, deployment, and product UX" for safeguards systems. The posting doesn't say "partners with design." It says the PM owns the UX.
At OpenAI, trust surfaces are carved into PM verticals: Integrity for abuse protections, Families for parental controls and youth safety, Sensitive Deployments for misuse prevention. Each lists design as a collaborator. None lists design as an owner.
What to do with this: When you reach out about trust-related design work at these companies, the buyer is a product leader, not a design peer. Your outreach should speak risk mitigation and user-control architecture. Save the craft bar and design systems language for a different audience.
Pattern 2: No global design executive surfaced at any of the five
Checked job boards, company blogs, team pages, design community directories, personal portfolio sites, and conference speaker archives. No named company-wide product design executive appeared at Cursor, Replit, Perplexity, OpenAI, or Anthropic.
Design activity is real. Cursor, Replit, and Anthropic all post Design Engineer roles (Cursor, Replit, Anthropic). OpenAI posts Product Designers and a Product Design Manager scoped to Foundations (identity, access, payments). Perplexity posts a Design Director that reports to an unnamed Head of Design, but the scope is brand and marketing only.
The closest signal to a product design leader: Business Insider identified Meaghan Choi as head of design for Claude Code at Anthropic in June 2026, during a Replit Vibecon fireside. That's a product-area lead, not a company-wide executive.
At Cursor and Replit, Design Engineer roles sit inside Engineering. Replit's UX function reports through an Engineering Manager, UX. Design is embedded, not autonomous.
What to do with this: Do not wait for a Head of Design posting to appear. That vacuum is where you enter. But the person who fills it will be hired by a product or engineering leader. Your outreach target is the product executive who currently manages trust without a design partner and is starting to feel the cost.
Pattern 3: Trust fragments across five-plus functions, and policy design is splitting off
OpenAI is the extreme case. Trust-related roles currently span at least seven distinct functions: Product Design, Product Management, Safety Systems, Research Alignment, Product Policy, Trust & Safety Operations, and Intelligence & Investigations. Add Security, Privacy, and Identity infrastructure and you're past ten.
Anthropic shows a similar pattern at smaller scale. Safeguards, Policy Design, Compliance, AI Reliability, Security, Privacy, and Account Abuse all hold pieces. Anthropic's Policy Design Manager, Age-Appropriate Design is a design role that owns child safety interventions and content classification, but the authority chain is policy, not product design. Perplexity's AI Policy and Strategic Initiatives and Secure Intelligence Institute roles handle trust-adjacent work under non-design leadership. Policy design is becoming its own discipline, pulling trust-surface authority further from product design with every hire.
Even at Cursor, which is lean, trust distributes across PM (agent behavior), Engineering (evals and agent quality), User Ops (feedback loops), and Design Engineering (interface). Four functions, no single owner.
What to do with this: The fragmentation is your positioning opportunity. These companies need someone who can design the coherent user experience that emerges from all those slices — someone who has done exactly that across organizational boundaries before. Your Alibaba work is the proof pattern: you named a structural gap across homepage, search, and PDP, built the mandate across three cross-functional sprints, and delivered measurable outcomes at $50B+ GMV. Different domain, identical organizational problem. And your Agentic Labs work is the domain proof that competing candidates almost certainly can't match. You've already built the trust surfaces these companies are distributing across five-plus functions: agent observation, confidence calibration, intervention points, handoff moments. That's organizational credibility and domain proof in one.
Use "Trust Is the New Interface" as a shared-language tool. The Watch → Verify → Delegate framework gives safeguards PMs and policy design managers something they can engage with on their terms.
How to route outreach by company type
Founder-led, no visible design executive (Cursor, Replit)
- Decision-makers: At Cursor, Michael Truell (co-founder, CEO) and Aman Sanger (co-founder) are the visible product authority. No VP Product or design executive surfaced. At Replit, Amjad Masad (founder, CEO) is the primary contact; Michele Catasta (President) is a secondary path. No named design executive found in the checked source chain.
- Contact path: Cold LinkedIn DM to founders. At companies this size with no design executive, founder-direct outreach outperforms career-page applications. The July 4th week thins inbox volume. Send Tuesday or Wednesday.
- Narrative fit: You conducted 32 warehouse floor interviews at Thermo Fisher, named five failure modes no one had mapped, and built five modules that recovered $20M+ in annual margin for a company that had no design function before you arrived. Cursor and Replit have the same structural gap in agent trust surfaces. Lead with that. "I build design teams" is a weaker opening than "I've built the thing you're missing."
Product-reorg, fragmented trust (OpenAI)
- Decision-makers: Greg Brockman returned to lead product strategy in May 2026. Three named product leads under him: Thibault Sottiaux (core product/platform), Ashley Alexander (consumer), Nick Turley (enterprise). The Product Design Manager Foundations role is live. Reporting line unclear — could route to product, design, or LoveFrom's overlay.
- Contact path: Cold LinkedIn DM to Sottiaux (core product/platform is where Foundations sits). The Foundations role is your entry point for a conversation, even if the role itself is scoped below your level.
- Narrative fit: Your Alibaba trust-architecture work consolidated a fragmented platform experience across three surfaces and delivered +20% daily transactions and -47% buyer security concerns at $50B+ GMV. OpenAI currently distributes trust decisions across seven-plus functions with no design coherence layer. You've solved this problem before, with metrics.
Safety-first, policy-design split (Anthropic)
- Decision-makers: Ami Vora took over product authority in January 2026 when Mike Krieger shifted to Labs. She is the most likely hiring decision-maker for any senior design role. Meaghan Choi is a product-area design contact for Claude Code specifically, not company-wide.
- Contact path: Cold LinkedIn DM to Vora. Reference the essay in first contact. The case studies are second-conversation material.
- Narrative fit: Thermo Fisher and Red Cross prove you lead design in regulated, high-stakes contexts where compliance isn't optional and failure has direct human consequences. The essay gives you shared vocabulary with Safeguards and Policy Design teams that competing candidates won't have.
Answer-quality focused, engineering-led trust (Perplexity)
- Decision-makers: Aravind Srinivas (co-founder, CEO) is the visible product authority. An unnamed Head of Design exists — the Design Director, Brand & Marketing reports to them — but the only visible design mandate under that title is brand and marketing. No product design leadership role surfaced in the checked source chain. No VP Product was identified either, which is notable for a company at this stage and may indicate founder-led product decisions.
- Contact path: Cold LinkedIn DM to Srinivas. Perplexity's Evals, Data Flywheel, and Enterprise Experience roles all touch trust without design ownership. That's the gap to name.
- Narrative fit: Your Carrier IQ work at Agentic Labs is the sharpest match here. You built an agentic system where a wrong answer has direct financial consequences in a regulated industry — InsurTech quote automation where confidence calibration and trust surfaces are the entire product. Perplexity's entire business is answer quality. Lead with Carrier IQ and the essay. The enterprise case studies are supporting evidence here, not the headline.
The design leadership role you're looking for at AI-native companies may never be posted. Trust authority has already been distributed to PM, engineering, safety, and policy. Contact the product leaders currently managing trust without a design partner. Show them what coherence looks like. July 4th week starts Friday — inboxes thin out, response rates go up. Send outreach Tuesday or Wednesday.
Most of your competition is still refreshing job boards. By the time a Head of Design posting appears, the trust architecture will already be set, and the role will be to execute decisions already made. Move now.
- Suno's live Head of Product Design: Suno's Ashby board shows an explicit mandate to lead Product Design, Design Engineering, and UX Research — the clearest AI-native design leadership posting in this cycle, and a direct battlecard candidate for next issue.
- Gusto's AI-native service design language: Gusto's fresh Senior Staff Service Designer posting describes designing handoffs between AI systems, product experiences, and human teams, including what happens when AI gets something wrong — unusually aligned with the trust essay's framework and worth a dedicated card.
- OpenAI's LoveFrom design overlay: The Verge reported that LoveFrom would take over design for all of OpenAI including software, but OpenAI's board still posts internal Product Design roles, which means the reporting line for Foundations design work remains unclear and worth monitoring.
- Anthropic's product-area design signal: Business Insider identified Meaghan Choi as head of design for Claude Code during a Replit Vibecon fireside, which confirms product-area design leadership exists at Anthropic even though no company-wide design executive has surfaced.
