What They Actually Evaluate
Line up the healthcare postings against tech postings and the vocabulary overlap is near-total — but each term resolves to a different standard.
At a tech company, "craft bar" lands at product quality and user delight. At Oscar, "uncompromising craft bar" lands at clinical experiences and regulated operations. At a tech company, "design systems" means consistency and shipping speed. At Talkiatry, the design system means a single leader balancing patient, provider, and business needs across four product surfaces.
The healthcare CPO is evaluating whether you understand that the regulatory constraint is the design surface — whether you see clinical trust, multi-stakeholder accountability, and compliance requirements as the material you design with.
Lee makes this concrete: he says patients, providers, and payers give different answers about healthcare's central problems, then names patient engagement as the product leader's additional frame. This candidate typically has deeper brand recognition and possibly stronger pure-craft signal. Their weakness is structural: they've never worked in a system where design doesn't have final authority over what ships. Your counter: you have. The Tells

When they're genuinely interested:
Ellen Dong at Headway, according to her published account of her hiring process, runs product demos for promising candidates before formal interviews, uses app critique to observe thought process, and treats the candidate's questions as evidence of depth. When she's closing, she personally delivers offers and introduces finalists to the team. The operational signal: if a healthcare CPO starts showing you the product's internal complexity — the provider interface, the clinical review workflow, the parts that aren't public — they're selling you.
