What you need to know before anything else
Banu Guler is the buyer. She was appointed Chief Design Officer on July 24, 2026, roughly seven weeks ago. The Design Lead posting went live the same day and has been open approximately 50 days. This is not a backfill. Guler is standing up a design organization that did not previously exist. The window to position as someone who helps build that organization narrows each week the posting stays open.
Act this cycle. The Battlecard will carry the outreach message and positioning guidance. This reconstruction gives you the event pattern that grounds it.
Event sequence
February 2022. Midjourney ships its first model. Five months later, the Discord server opens to the public. By late summer, founder David Holz describes a self-funded team of roughly ten people with no outside investors.
2023. Revenue exceeds $200 million.
2024. Revenue reaches approximately $300 million, profitable. Eight major model versions have shipped. The product surface has expanded from a Discord bot to web and mobile interfaces.
2025–mid 2026. Midjourney ships its first video model, signs a Meta licensing partnership, and announces a medical-hardware initiative (full-body ultrasonic imaging). The company remains self-funded and engineer-led.
During this entire run, founding through mid-July 2026, no publicly identifiable design executive existed at Midjourney. I checked the company's careers page, LinkedIn, personal portfolio sites, Dive Club, Designer Fund Bridge, ADPList, Design Matters speaker archives, and public title searches. Nothing. Design decisions across an expanding product surface were made by engineers and the founder.
July 23, 2026. Midjourney announces its first acquisition: Co-Star, the astrology app Banu Guler co-founded in 2017.
July 24, 2026. Guler's CDO appointment goes public. The same day, Midjourney posts six product-organization roles simultaneously: Design Lead, Senior Product Designer, Product Designer, freelance Brand Designer, Product Manager, QA Analyst.
August 12, 2026. Guler appears in a reported Office Hours session discussing progressive disclosure and visual iteration, making the product more usable without requiring prompt-syntax expertise.
Late August–early September 2026. Alpha interface updates in August and September — simpler navigation, surfaced controls, rapid feedback cycles — track the direction Guler described. Neither update carries her byline, but the timing and substance align.
What Guler brought
Co-Star was not a small acquisition. Bloomberg-derived reporting puts the acquired team at approximately 24 employees and the product at 4.3 million monthly active users. The app holds Editors' Choice on the App Store with a 4.8-star average across 206,000 ratings and was a 2024 Webby nominee for Best Visual Design. Vanity Fair and Vogue profiled it primarily through its design and tone: monochrome visual identity, deliberately provocative interaction patterns, distinctive product voice.
Guler's background is fashion, independent publishing, and consumer product. Not enterprise software.
Two scope signals from her own public statements:
- She joined to lead a "unified product, design, and frontend team" across all Midjourney projects. Cross-functional and cross-project authority, broader than a typical CDO title.
- Co-Star continues operating under her direction (an iOS update shipped August 1). She is running a live consumer product while simultaneously building Midjourney's design function.
The acquisition announcement notes that Holz and Guler had known each other for more than five years. This was not a search-firm placement. It was a founder acquiring a trusted collaborator along with her functioning team.
Gaps in the record:
- Team composition. The 24-person team's functional breakdown is undisclosed. How many are designers versus engineers, product managers, or content specialists is unknown. This determines whether the Design Lead inherits an existing design team or builds alongside people who came from a different product context.
- Authority structure. Guler's budget authority, executive decision rights, and whether engineering outside frontend reports to her are unstated. Her cross-project scope is claimed publicly. The organizational power behind it is not confirmed.
- Equity. Midjourney is self-funded, profitable, and has taken no outside investment at $300 million in revenue. The Design Lead posting states cash compensation and benefits but does not mention equity. Whether equity exists, and in what form, is unanswerable from public signal. The standard venture-backed equity framework does not apply here. Clarify this early in any conversation.
The pattern: design authority arrived through acquisition, not maturation
Midjourney did not gradually develop a need for design leadership and go find it. It ran $300 million in revenue across an expanding product surface for four years without anyone in a design executive seat. Then it acquired a company whose primary asset was a functioning product-and-design team led by someone the founder already trusted, and immediately posted the roles needed to extend that nucleus across the rest of the product.
The Design Lead posting assigns recruiting, mentoring, prototyping, critique, and operating-rhythm responsibilities. It says the hire works directly with the CDO. The same-day Senior Product Designer and Product Designer postings describe different layers of hands-on work. The listings do not state whether those designers report to the Design Lead, directly to Guler, or elsewhere.
This is Guler's first external design-leadership hire at a company where design had no organizational representation eight weeks ago. The person in this role will help establish the operating rhythms, hiring pipeline, and craft standards of a design organization being assembled in real time.
Prediction
Guler will fill this role externally, and she is being highly selective because this hire sets the standard for every external design hire that follows. The posting's 50-day duration, combined with her limited public appearances and active product shipping, indicates she is in consolidation mode: integrating the Co-Star team, establishing authority across Midjourney's projects, and shipping visible changes, all simultaneously.
The org-building character of the role has a finite lifespan. Once Guler's internal organization stabilizes and the first external design hires are in seat, the Design Lead becomes a different job: managing within an established structure rather than co-creating one.
What would make this wrong: Guler has already identified an internal candidate from the Co-Star team or an existing Midjourney employee, and the external posting is procedural. Or the role has been quietly filled and the Ashby listing hasn't been pulled. The posting's continued presence as of September 12 argues against both, but neither can be ruled out from public signal.
Competitive landscape
Three candidate profiles are likely in the pipeline. These are inferred from the posting's requirements, Guler's background, and Midjourney's market position, not from observed candidates.
Consumer-product design director. Confidence: high. This is Guler's own world. She built a consumer product recognized primarily for its visual and interaction design, and she knows exactly what good looks like here. She will naturally attract and be able to evaluate candidates from consumer-product backgrounds. Probable advantage: aesthetic sensibility and consumer-product intuition that maps to Midjourney's user base. Where you're vulnerable: your portfolio leads with enterprise and B2B platforms. The Alibaba and BCG DV work demonstrates scale and org-building, but it doesn't answer the craft-taste question Guler will screen for first. This is your sharpest vulnerability, and the archetype most likely to actually be in the pipeline.
AI-native design leader (Anthropic, OpenAI, or well-funded AI startup). Confidence: moderate. Midjourney's profile attracts AI-native candidates, but the org-building scope — recruiting, mentoring, operating rhythms — may filter some toward pure-IC roles instead. Probable advantage: brand recognition in AI, direct experience designing for generative models. Where you're differentiated: published frontier AI design thinking. The Trust essay's five-handoff framework and the forward-looking visual design artifacts are work most AI-native candidates don't produce publicly because they design internally. Your Agentic Labs apps are live and inspectable.
Craft-heavy senior IC (Staff or Senior Staff from a large company). Confidence: lower. The posting's recruiting, mentoring, and operating-rhythm responsibilities actively screen against pure ICs. Probable advantage: portfolio depth in specific design execution. Where you're differentiated: the org-building half of the role. Your Alibaba and BCG DV leadership scope covers ground a pure IC cannot.
Contact recommendation
Who: Banu Guler. She is the only named executive over product, design, and frontend. The posting says the Design Lead works directly with her. She is the decision-maker.
Warm path assessment: Cold. No mutual connections verified. Her last located public appearance was August 12, outside the four-day recency window. LinkedIn or X direct message, with the formal Ashby application submitted in parallel.
People returned from Labor Day. If Guler resumed external candidate evaluation this week, outreach that arrives now lands during a natural restart. The posting crossed 50 days. The window is open but narrowing.
Why the positioning archetype fits this pattern: The problem Guler described in Office Hours — making AI-native creative tools more usable without sacrificing power — maps directly to the Trust essay's five-handoff framework and the forward-looking visual design artifacts. These are the evidence layers most relevant to what this reconstruction reveals about her priorities. Your enterprise-scale cases (Alibaba, the BCG DV portfolio) establish org-building credibility, which matters for a role that is standing up a design organization from nothing.
The consumer-product gap is your most serious competitive vulnerability here. Guler built a consumer product recognized primarily for its visual and interaction design. Your published portfolio does not contain comparable consumer-product craft proof. The forward-looking artifacts demonstrate AI-native interaction thinking at the level Midjourney's product surface demands, and that is real and relevant. But they do not substitute for consumer-product visual taste, and a candidate from Guler's own world will not need to bridge that gap. The Battlecard will address how to handle this in outreach.
- Guler's hiring instincts: A 2023 interview with Co-Star's people lead said every finalist met Guler and she retained final approval over all hiring decisions across the company — worth knowing if that pattern carries to Midjourney.
- Midjourney's undisclosed projects: The acquisition announcement described Medical as the first of roughly six ambitious projects expected over six months, which means the Design Lead's actual product surface could expand substantially before year-end.
- Homepage routing risk: The current junochen.com homepage places NDA-protected TinyFish work first under Selected Work before surfacing the Agentic Labs or Trust essay — a recipient clicking through from outreach may encounter the transition narrative before the AI-native proof.
- Slack's parallel window: Michael Lenahan publicly said the VP Product Design role reports to him and named agent-as-coworker interaction models as the problem, making it the only other current target with a confirmed hiring owner and a direct mandate overlap with your Trust framework.
