The Mandate Test You Run Before You Tailor Anything

Holiday weekend. Hiring managers are offline. Use the quiet to draft outreach you send Tuesday, but draft it diagnostic, not promotional. Enterprise transformation roles (Capital One's AI in Experience Design posting is the live example) often carry Director titles stapled to adoption-program mandates. You can separate real authority from decoration in three moves. Name the company moment so the message reads as timed. State a one-sentence thesis about what the role requires: "AI design transformation is most durable when the design leader owns the operating contract — standards, decision rights, incident authority — not the adoption program." Lead with your essay and Agentic Labs as proof. Then close with one diagnostic question framed as confirmation, not interrogation: "Is that the shape of what you're building?" Someone with real authority will answer directly. Someone without it will redirect you to another stakeholder or hedge. Both responses tell you what you need to know before you spend a week tailoring materials for a mandate that may not exist.

Three probe questions — pick one per outreach:

"Is the mandate to define how design and AI work together — standards, tooling, decision rights — or to help teams adopt AI products already being built?" Names both versions without ranking them. If the reply hedges, the mandate is still being negotiated internally.

"When an AI experience fails in a customer interaction, who owns what changes before the next iteration?" If the answer redirects to safety or risk, design sits downstream of governance.

"Where does design have real input today — before roadmap lock, or after requirements are set?" Entry timing tells you more about actual authority than reporting line does.

Transferable to any enterprise transformation signal. Same structure works wherever the title outpaces the mandate.

Decayed. Suno's Head of Product Design hit 73 days. Thirty past stale threshold, no repost, no hiring-manager activity. Remove from active board. Headway's Design Director, Core Insurance & Design Systems is at ~269 days. Ghost req. Retire it. Kiddom's Director of Design returned no result on a direct Lever check July 3. Never verified, now gone.

Strengthened. Headway's Provider Experience posting (June 4, 29 days) picked up two corroborating PM roles: Staff PM, AI Platform (June 17) and Staff PM, AI Patient Experience (June 24). The design role posted before the PM cluster, which inverts the usual pattern. Both functions are hiring into the same AI buildout simultaneously, and that parallel investment is a stronger signal than the design posting alone. Ramp's Director, Product Design (June 8, 25 days) now sits inside a cluster: design recruiter (June 15, moderate confidence), agentic CX PM, and AI Operations Specialist for agentic workflows. They are building infrastructure around this role.

New. Suno launched Spark (June 25–28), pivoting toward a managed streaming destination with governance terms drawing sharp industry backlash. Company moment, not a role signal. The stale posting and the fresh controversy are separate facts. Anthropic updated two roles in the scan window: Research Engineer, Computer Use (June 30) and Product Operations Manager, Feedback Loops (July 2). Neither is Director+ design leadership. Both confirm continued investment in agentic product infrastructure during the pre-IPO build, but no design leadership opening is visible on Greenhouse as of today.

Ramp cluster confidence: Director posting and agentic PM roles are high confidence (Ashby-confirmed). Design recruiter is moderate confidence, sourced from developments log, pending direct verification.

Anthropic context: Confidential S-1 filed June 1. Pre-IPO periods often suppress external design leadership postings. No visible opening is consistent with that pattern but not explained by it alone.
