An independent researcher just published a wire-level teardown of xAI's Grok Build CLI, and the numbers are absurd. On a 12 GB test repository, the coding agent's model channel used 192 KB of traffic. A parallel upload channel quietly bundled the entire Git repo and its full commit history into 73 chunks, shipping 5.10 GiB to a Google Cloud Storage bucket called grok-code-session-traces. That's a 27,800× ratio between what the model needed and what left your machine. The "Improve the model" toggle? It controls training consent only. Flip it off, the server still returns trace_upload_enabled: true. xAI marketed this tool as "local-first."
