Along the Purus River in Brazil's Amazonas state, the air held moisture you could feel against the roof of your mouth. Sweat could not evaporate. River dolphins surfaced pink with capillary heat into atmosphere that was nearly water itself. In September 2024, a community leader pointed to white marks four meters overhead on the trees where the waterline used to reach. A study published this month identified the mechanism. Heat drives the drought now. Heat arrives first, pulls moisture from soil, and the soil cannot cool the air, and the air heats further, and rain fails. Somewhere around the year 2000, something in that cycle locked shut.

Arctic correction: Jennifer Francis calls the post-2000 acceleration "eerily coincident with the onset of rapid Arctic warming, sea-ice loss, and decline in spring snow cover."

Flash drought: Heat-first events trigger droughts so sudden that operational monitoring systems cannot detect them fast enough to issue warnings.

Hotspot zones: South America, western Canada, Alaska, the western U.S., and central and eastern Africa show the steepest compound extreme increases.

Threshold crossed: Researchers believe Earth may have passed an irreversible tipping point around 2000. Whether it is permanent remains unconfirmed.

Next reading: Some models forecast another major El Niño forming later this year. This office has not yet issued the corresponding correction.

LEVEL 1: ADVISORY

116 Million People Hit Climate Shift Index 2+

March 6. Climate Central flagged 116 million Americans at a Climate Shift Index of 2 or higher across the eastern U.S. Upper Midwest temperatures ran 34°F above average. Winter 2025–26 closed as the second warmest on record for the contiguous states. Nobody evacuates from warm.

Forty Percent of the Country Enters Spring Dry

More than 40% of the U.S. is in drought as spring begins. Florida declared emergency over its worst drought in 25 years, 100% of the state parched for the first time on record. Oklahoma's February ran 8.7°F above normal. The soil remembers what the winter didn't deliver.

LEVEL 3: WARNING

Largest U.S. Wildfire of 2026 Burns 283,283 Acres

The Ranger Road Fire outside Beaver, Oklahoma, tore 283,283 acres across two states on 65-mph winds through drought-cured grassland. Florida has logged 650+ wildfires since January. Fire season is arriving months early nationwide. The drought from the previous card lit this one.

LEVEL 4: EMERGENCY

Lake Powell Approaching Hydropower Dead Pool at 26%

Lake Powell holds 26% of its capacity and is falling toward 3,490 feet, the elevation below which Glen Canyon Dam stops generating power for 5 million people in six states. Bureau of Reclamation projections show a potential record low by March 2027. Basin states can't agree on replacement rules. The water that burned in Oklahoma isn't coming back here.

LEVEL 5: CRITICAL

Twenty Percent of Mature Giant Sequoias Are Gone

Fire and drought have killed up to 20% of the world's mature giant sequoias since 2015. Seedling regeneration in the burned groves is close to zero. Researchers say natural recovery looks unlikely under current trajectory. These trees were seedlings when Rome fell. They do not come back when the rain does.

LEVEL 6: TERMINAL

El Niño Forecast Stacks on Top of Everything

ECMWF and NOAA models converge: El Niño likely by mid-2026, potentially rivaling the strongest on record. Hansen et al. project peak warming of 1.7°C above pre-industrial by 2027. A Defense Department meteorologist put it plainly: the system can no longer exhaust the heat before the next event arrives. This card has no next card.
