Post-Labor Day scan across DesignBetter, 12 VC portfolio boards (a16z, Sequoia, Greylock, General Catalyst, YC, and others), and direct ATS platforms (Ashby, Greenhouse, Lever). Started with 162 senior design records. Seven roles at six companies survived verification for Watch. None cleared Act — the strongest portfolio matches are penalized by public-company equity (Nubank) or structurally thin design influence (Handshake, Replicant). Ten monitoring entries round out the scan: executive hires creating 30-day windows, funding triggers without design roles, and dormant signals with named reactivation conditions.
The prior 100 List published 73 entries when the evidence didn't support 100. This cycle supports 17.
Window status changes:
- New to Watch: Handshake, Nubank AI Private Banker, Nubank Digital Assets, Thumbtack
- Continuing Watch: HighLevel (Issue #10), Replicant (Issue #10), Allocate (Issue #10)
- Expiring: Nubank AI Private Banker (day 22, entering Watch decay), Allocate (day 25, in Watch decay)
- Downgraded to Ignore: Owner.com (day 209), Givebutter (day 30)
Nubank AI Private Banker, Handshake, and Replicant. Role scores separate them: 14, 13, and 13 versus 11, 11, and 11 for Thumbtack, HighLevel, and Allocate. The gap is craft depth and AI exposure. Nubank and Allocate are both aging — if you're moving on either, it's this week or you're watching the window close.
Agent-trust design roles
These three roles map to the Trust essay, TinyFish production depth, and Agentic Labs more directly than anything else outside the core 35. All three are held below Act by company-rubric gaps — public equity or design influence scored at 1 — but the role scores are the highest in this scan.
1. Nubank. Head of Design, AI Private Banker — leads 6+ designers building voice, confidence calibration, error recovery, and transparency for an AI financial advisor with 15M+ MAU across 135M customers.
- Stage / Size / Capital: NYSE-listed (NU). ~7,000 employees. Public RSUs.
- Offices: Palo Alto hybrid, 2–3 days/week.
- Value chain: Downstream consumer fintech. AI Private Banker sits on Nubank's banking infrastructure; the team is building foundational interaction systems intended to extend platform-wide.
- Best at: Deploying AI-native financial products to 135M consumers faster than any US neobank.
- Signals: Posted Aug 21 (day 22, entering Watch decay). Justified: Head of Design for a 15M-MAU AI product. The candidate pool combining AI-trust design, consumer financial services, and team leadership is thin enough to expect a long fill cycle. Recency flag: Watch.
- Tier: AI-native. Tier Playbook: Read AI-native playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 9/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 1, Design influence 3, Trajectory 3. Role 14/15 — Comp 2, Scope 3, Craft 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio 3.
- Portfolio match: The hard design problem is confidence calibration in financial guidance where bad output costs the user money. A customer asking "should I move my savings?" needs to distinguish a confident inference from a hedged guess, and they don't have the financial literacy to parse the difference on their own. Lead with Carrier IQ's provenance framework from Agentic Labs — showing where an automated recommendation came from and why is the exact problem AI Private Banker faces for financial attribution. Cite Allē (30M members, 3.2× redemption, Product Design Director at BCG Digital Ventures) as consumer-trust proof at scale. What separates you: you've built agent provenance in production (most recently as Head of Product at TinyFish) and designed consumer trust at 30M-member scale. That combination is rare in this candidate pool.
- Hiring manager: Ethan Eismann, CDO, runs design evaluation. Rohan Ramanath, GM AI Core, is the product partner. Direct reporting line unresolved.
- Verdict: Watch. Misses Act on two independent grounds: company score 9 (public equity limits Stage/equity to 1) and signal at day 22, entering Watch decay. Even if the company score were higher, the anchoring signal is no longer in its hot window. Battlecard candidate if upgraded. Action: Route through Eismann's orbit. Prepare the Trust essay as the async artifact and Carrier IQ provenance as the specific proof point. Identify the direct reporting line before investing in tailored outreach. This posting is aging — act before day 30 or accept that you're watching it decay.
2. Handshake. Staff Product Designer, Student AI Agent — designs the experience of an AI agent acting through the student career-search workflow, including reasoning transparency, uncertainty communication, and handoffs.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Late-stage private. 1,001–5,000 employees. $190K–$240K + equity.
- Offices: San Francisco hybrid.
- Value chain: Three-sided marketplace connecting 25M knowledge workers, 1,600+ institutions, and 1M employers. The AI agent is a product layer on the marketplace.
- Best at: Network density in early-career hiring. No competitor has the institutional-employer-student triangle at this scale.
- Signals: Posted Sep 4 (day 8, hot). Active three-role design cluster: this Staff seat plus Staff Growth and Senior Product Designer II, all live simultaneously. Glassdoor 3.1/5 from 306 reviews with recent concerns about leadership and product-engineering alignment. Treat as a due-diligence question for the interview, not a disqualifier at outreach.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read growth-stage playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 7/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 1, Trajectory 2. Role 13/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio 3.
- Portfolio match: The surface is an agent recommending career paths to students — high-stakes personal decisions where a bad recommendation erodes trust fast and the user has no independent way to evaluate the agent's reasoning. Lead with the Trust essay's Watch-to-Verify transition: the moment a user decides whether to act on an agent's suggestion. A student shouldn't delegate career decisions to an agent they can't verify. Cite Allē's dual-surface redesign (30M members, 3.2× redemption, Product Design Director at BCG Digital Ventures) as proof you've designed consumer decision flows at scale. What separates you: you shipped agent workflows in production at TinyFish where the user needed to understand what the agent did before acting on it. Most consumer AI designers haven't worked at that trust layer.
- Hiring manager: Vee Sahgal, CPO, is the executive fallback. No Head of Design, VP Design, or design director identified. Gap flagged.
- Verdict: Watch. Company held back by thin design influence — no visible design leader. Action: The three-role cluster suggests a design-team build. Before outreach, confirm who owns design evaluation. Check whether any of the three postings name a design manager. If the design manager remains unresolved, route through the recruiter on this posting to confirm the evaluation path. The Glassdoor signal warrants a direct question about design's relationship to product and engineering if you reach a conversation.
3. Replicant. Director, Product Design — builds the design function from near-zero at a voice/chat/messaging agent company for customer-service automation. Three-person team, ~80% hands-on, reports to VP Product.
- Stage / Size / Capital: 51–200 employees. Stage undisclosed (likely Series B–C). Comp not posted.
- Offices: Remote (US). Previously surfaced in Issue #10; still live, no new signal beyond continued availability.
- Value chain: Midstream AI agent platform for contact-center automation. The product is the agent — conversation design, guardrails, and trust are the core design surface.
- Best at: Unusual candor. The posting explicitly states that previous attempts to establish design were under-resourced and the company remains engineering- and sales-led.
- Signals: Live, no posting date resolved. Glassdoor 3.9/5 from 40 reviews, 76% recommend. Recency flag: Watch (no date confirmation). Date risk: if this posting is older than 42 days, the verdict drops to Ignore-until-trigger. The posting date could not be confirmed from any public source.
- Tier: AI-native. Tier Playbook: Read AI-native playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 8/12 — AI centrality 3, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 1, Trajectory 2. Role 13/15 — Comp 1, Scope 3, Craft 3, AI exposure 3, Portfolio 3.
- Portfolio match: Two mandates here, and the order matters. Lead with function-building — you built design practices from zero across Thermo Fisher, Red Cross, Equinox+, and Allē as Product Design Director at BCG Digital Ventures. Then bridge to agent-trust: the Trust essay's framework for when an agent should escalate to a human is the exact design problem in customer-service automation. What separates you: the candidates who've built design functions from scratch rarely have agent-design production experience, and the candidates with agent experience rarely have function-building backgrounds. You have both, and the TinyFish work grounds the agent side in production reality.
- Hiring manager: Benjamin Edick, VP Product. Confirmed in the posting.
- Verdict: Watch. Penalized by design influence (1/3) and undisclosed comp. Action: Your first question to Edick or the recruiter is when this search opened. If it launched more than six weeks ago, ask what changed — a stale search at a company that admits to under-resourcing design may be a search the company isn't committed to filling. If the window is confirmed active, lead with function-building proof (BCG DV), bridge to agent-trust (Trust essay + TinyFish). Ask about compensation range and executive sponsorship durability early. The posting's candor about past under-resourcing is useful — but you need to determine whether it reflects genuine self-awareness or a pattern that will repeat. "Align without formal authority" at an engineering- and sales-led company deserves a direct question: what budget, what headcount commitment, what executive sponsor?
Platform and marketplace leadership
Different portfolio lead for these three. Alibaba's B2B marketplace redesign and the BCG DV function-building track record, not the Trust essay.
4. Thumbtack. Director, Product Design — leads multiple teams across Demand Partnerships (Lowe's, OpenAI, Gemini, real estate) and Demand Generation for a home-services marketplace connecting 4.5M customers with 300K service businesses.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Late-stage private, $3.2B valuation as of 2021. 1,001–5,000 employees. $293K–$379K total cash (Bay Area).
- Offices: US-remote.
- Value chain: Downstream consumer marketplace. Design scope spans partner-facing entry points and homeowner-facing conversion.
- Best at: Compensation transparency and scope clarity. The posting is unusually specific about what the director owns.
- Signals: First observed Sep 7 (day 5, hot). The posting says the director raises craft quality "through teams rather than individual contribution." Management-led, not player-coach. Craft depth scored at 2 accordingly.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read growth-stage playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 7/12 — AI centrality 1, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 2, Trajectory 2. Role 11/15 — Comp 3, Scope 3, Craft 2, AI exposure 1, Portfolio 2.
- Portfolio match: The design problem is marketplace coherence — how partner acquisition channels (Lowe's, AI platforms, real estate) feed into a homeowner experience that feels unified rather than fragmented. Lead with how you identified the structural gap in Alibaba's non-localized experience and built the mandate to fix it across homepage, search, and PDP (+20% daily transactions, +2.2pt NPS, Head of Design and Research, North America). The three cross-functional sprints at Alibaba mirror the cross-partner coordination this role requires. What separates you: Alibaba at $50B+ GMV is marketplace proof at a scale no other candidate in this pool will match.
- Hiring manager: Lauren Porter, historically Head of Design (named 2023, 6+ years tenure). Current status unconfirmed.
- Verdict: Watch. Strong comp, clear scope, but management-led craft and low AI exposure limit the role score. Action: Confirm whether Porter still owns design. If she does, lead with Alibaba's marketplace scale. If the design leader has changed, that's a different signal worth investigating before outreach.
5. HighLevel. Staff Product Designer — leads design across multiple product areas of an SMB platform serving 2M+ businesses, with explicit focus on AI-powered automation where customers need transparency, control, and trust.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Profitable. General Atlantic minority investment (2024), founders majority. 1,500+ employees. $190K–$240K. Previously in Issue #10; this cycle adds verified direct URL and confirmed comp.
- Offices: US-remote.
- Value chain: Midstream platform — agencies and SMBs run operations on HighLevel (CRM, automation, messaging, AI Employee).
- Best at: Growth velocity while profitable. 5× over three years, founder-controlled.
- Signals: First observed Sep 6 (day 6, hot). No design leader identified in public profiles or company pages.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read growth-stage playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 8/12 — AI centrality 2, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 1, Trajectory 3. Role 11/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 2, Portfolio 2.
- Portfolio match: The design problem is making AI-powered automation trustworthy for SMB operators who don't have technical teams to debug when the AI Employee does something unexpected. Lead with Brand Pulse from Agentic Labs — real-time AI-powered business intelligence where the operator needs to understand what the system surfaced and why. Cite Alibaba (+20% transactions, Head of Design and Research, North America) as proof you can improve conversion in complex B2B platforms. What separates you: you've designed AI-powered business tools (Agentic Labs) and redesigned a massive B2B marketplace (Alibaba). HighLevel's product sits at the intersection of both.
- Hiring manager: Unresolved. No design evaluation owner identified. Gap flagged. Action before outreach: Check whether the Lever posting names a hiring manager in the application flow. Search LinkedIn for anyone with a design leadership title at HighLevel. Check whether HighLevel's product leaders (VP Product, CPO) have design in their background — at a company this size with no visible design leader, the product executive may own the evaluation.
- Verdict: Watch. Profitable growth and hands-on craft, but unknown design evaluation owner. A company with 1,500+ employees and no identifiable design leader is a signal worth reading carefully.
6. Allocate. Head of Design — owns the design function for a private-market investment platform supporting 350+ advisory firms, 1,500 GP relationships, $5B+ in assets. Reports to CEO.
- Stage / Size / Capital: Early-stage. $225K–$260K + bonus + equity. Previously in Issue #10; now at day 25 (Watch decay).
- Offices: Palo Alto, 3 days/week.
- Value chain: Midstream fintech infrastructure between GPs and advisory firms.
- Best at: CEO-direct reporting for design. Unusual authority structure at this stage.
- Signals: Posted Aug 18 (day 25, Watch decay). Justified: Head of Design at a specialized fintech company; thin candidate pool. Recency flag: Watch, aging.
- Tier: Growth-stage platform. Tier Playbook: Read growth-stage playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 8/12 — AI centrality 1, Stage/equity 2, Design influence 3, Trajectory 2. Role 11/15 — Comp 2, Scope 3, Craft 3, AI exposure 1, Portfolio 2.
- Portfolio match: The design problem is making complex financial infrastructure — fund access, GP relationship management, portfolio construction — usable for advisory firms whose operators are financial professionals, not technologists. Lead with Thermo Fisher mySupply ($20M+ margin, 6 pharma partners, 100% adoption, Product Design Director at BCG Digital Ventures): regulated B2B infrastructure designed for specialized professional users who adopted it completely. What separates you: 100% adoption in regulated B2B infrastructure with sophisticated institutional users. Most design candidates at this level have consumer or general enterprise backgrounds, not specialized professional-user platforms.
- Hiring manager: Samir Kaji, CEO. Confirmed. Note: Hana Yang (CXO) and Matt Gittlitz (CPO) also hold product/experience titles.
- Verdict: Watch. Strong authority claim but low AI exposure and aging. Action: If you're going to move, move this week — day 25 and counting. Outreach goes to Kaji directly. Lead with Thermo Fisher. Ask about the CXO/CPO/Head of Design decision-rights structure early — three people sharing authority over product and experience needs clarification before you invest further.
Consumer fintech — evaluate the screen before investing time
7. Nubank. Senior Staff Product Designer, Digital Assets — lead design voice for consumer crypto products (buying, selling, staking, transfers, payments) across 135M customers.
- Stage / Size / Capital: NYSE-listed. Palo Alto hybrid. Public RSUs.
- Signals: Posted Aug 27 (day 16, hot). Interview includes async portfolio review with CDO Ethan Eismann, then live review with design leaders.
- Tier: Enterprise platform. Tier Playbook: Read enterprise playbook before outreach.
- Rubric: Company 7/12 — AI centrality 0, Stage/equity 1, Design influence 3, Trajectory 3. Role 10/15 — Comp 2, Scope 2, Craft 3, AI exposure 1, Portfolio 2.
- Portfolio match and screen-out risk: The posting explicitly states that candidates whose work is principally B2B or enterprise are not a fit, and requires recent mobile consumer-product work. Your strongest consumer proof — Allē (30M members, dual-surface, 3.2× redemption) — is consumer-facing but not mobile-first. Alibaba is B2B. Thermo Fisher is enterprise. The Agentic Labs apps are web-based. This is a potential screen-out at the async portfolio review, before you reach a conversation. Hiring manager: Michael Rihani, GM Digital Assets.
- Verdict: Watch with screen-out flag. Do not invest outreach time until you've assessed whether Allē passes the mobile-consumer screen. If the gap is real, this becomes Ignore-until-trigger (trigger: you publish a consumer-mobile case study).
Executive-hire windows
Three CPO/CTO hires in the past week at companies outside the core 35. None has posted a qualifying design role yet. The 30-day window after a product-leadership hire is historically when design searches launch.
8. Portside. Aviation operations platform, 235+ employees, 1,100 enterprise customers. David Kim named CPO Sep 8. Current jobs board has product-engineering roles, no design posting. Trigger: Director+ or Staff design role appears. Window: 26 days remaining.
9. Sionic. Real-time bank-to-bank POS payments with AI fraud detection. Shashi Varma named CTO and Head of Product Sep 10. No design posting or public design leader. Trigger: Design role appears. Window: 28 days.
10. ASI. Promotional products platform (1.2M+ products, 3,000+ suppliers). Former Zillow VP Matt Gilliland named CPO Sep 8, starts Sep 14. AI design studio launched July. Trigger: Design leadership role appears. Window: 30 days from Sep 14.
Funding triggers
Four companies that raised significant rounds in the past two weeks without posting a qualifying design role. Funding at this scale historically precedes design-team expansion by 4–12 weeks.
11. Wonderful. $550M Series C at $5B valuation (Sep 2), led by Insight Partners. Enterprise AI, Amsterdam HQ, 650 employees. Research note: the funded company at wonderful.ai is distinct from wonderfulagent.ai, a separate smaller organization. The funded company's careers page lists deployment and operations roles, no product design. Trigger: Product design posting on wonderful.ai. Geographic risk: Amsterdam HQ — confirm US-accessible roles before acting.
12. Inspiren. Senior-living care platform (AI notifications, fall prevention, care planning). Series C announced Sep 10. 51–200 employees. Current Greenhouse board has product management and engineering, no product design. No design leader appointed in the past 6 months. Trigger: Product design posting appears. Portfolio note if triggered: lead with Red Cross (national deployment, high-stakes care delivery, Product Design Director at BCG Digital Ventures) and TinyFish production AI experience.
13. Archy. Dental practice management, 1,000+ practices. $50M Series C (Sep 11), led by JMI Equity. Current Senior Product Designer posting at $150K–$175K — below comp floor and below Staff level. Trigger: Director+ or Staff role at competitive comp.
14. Forus. Healthcare. $150M Series C at $3B valuation (Sep 8), led by Bain Capital Ventures. Current Product Designer role is New York on-site, not Staff level. Trigger: Bay Area-accessible Staff+ design role.
Dormant or blocked
Three companies previously surfaced or investigated without a current actionable path.
15. Owner.com. Staff Product Designer still live but dated February 16 — 209 days old. Ignore-until-trigger. Trigger: repost with fresh language or new design leadership hire.
16. Givebutter. Director, Product Design posted Aug 13 (day 30). Still live but aging without a fresh buyer event. Ignore-until-trigger. Trigger: funding, executive hire, or repost.
17. Cognition. Devin (end-to-end software agent), 51–200 employees. Joseph Zhang identified as Head of Design. Jared Palmer named VP Engineering days before cutoff. No qualifying design posting — current recruiting targets product engineers who write production code and define agent UX. Ignore-until-trigger. Trigger: Staff+ product design role appears, or Zhang posts a hiring signal.
Design systems as AI infrastructure — standing monitor
I looked for companies where design-systems roles reference AI agents, generated interfaces, MCP, or machine-readable tokens. The pattern is real — Careem's posting describes a system that must serve "AI agents that consume, generate and assemble design" with MCP integrations — but the only new qualifying example is in Dubai. Thumbtack has a design-systems posting referencing machine-readable foundations for "humans and agents," but at Senior level. Imprint's Design Systems Lead uses "machine-readable, AI-consumable foundations" but has been indexed for roughly two months. No Bay Area-accessible, Staff+-level, fresh posting in this category survived verification. Adding as a standing monitoring item — the pattern is producing postings faster than qualifying ones are reaching the Bay Area at the right level, and that will change within a cycle or two.
Next week: Check whether the three executive-hire windows (Portside, Sionic, ASI) have produced design postings. Re-verify Nubank AI Private Banker and Allocate — both are in Watch decay and will be downgraded if no refresh signal appears by day 42. Continue scanning for design-systems-as-AI-infrastructure postings at Staff+ level.
- Cognition's $48B raise: Cognition reportedly raised more than $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation on September 9, but Head of Design Joseph Zhang has not posted a hiring signal and current recruiting targets product engineers rather than designers.
- Anthropic's Evals role: Anthropic's Product Designer, Evals & Prompts posting requires production Python and evaluation-pipeline ownership, making it a capability gap rather than a positioning gap — worth tracking for adjacent roles where agent-production experience is the advantage.
- LinkedIn timestamp unreliability: LinkedIn permits employers to promote and renew already-open jobs, which updates displayed age without creating a new requisition — the visible "posted X days ago" can reflect a distribution event rather than a fresh opening.
- Wonderful identity confusion: The company that raised $550M at wonderful.ai is a 650-employee Amsterdam-based enterprise AI company, distinct from the 64-employee wonderfulagent.ai organization whose Product Designer role circulated in aggregator feeds.
