Lithium Carbonate Reverses Off May Two-Year High

CNY 200,500/mt on May 13, a two-year peak. Now CNY 163,000–180,000 as mine restarts (Bald Hill, Finniss) and Guangzhou Futures Exchange warehouse builds cap the rally. The +170% move from October 2025's CNY 73,550 low has reversed in direction but not in level. Prices remain more than double that floor. Trading Economics/SMM, early June 2026.

ESS Cells Rose Twenty Percent, Then Stopped

314 Ah LFP cells went from CNY 0.310/Wh in early December to CNY 0.365/Wh by April 20. Top-tier framework-procurement quotes touched CNY 0.40/Wh. Flat since. System Price

BESS System Prices Refuse to Follow Upstream

2h DC-side liquid-cooled ESS averaged CNY 0.49/Wh as of April 20. That is up from CNY 0.41/Wh in October 2025 but flat over the most recent reporting period. 4h systems stabilized above CNY 0.50/Wh. All Three Korean Makers in the Red

First simultaneous quarterly operating losses. LGES: KRW 207.8B reported, KRW 397.5B ex-IRA subsidy (editorial inference from disclosed subsidy contribution). July 4 is the construction-start deadline for co-located solar+BESS projects safe-harboring under pre-OBBB ITC rules. After that, the 55% non-FEOC cost threshold applies immediately, rising to 60% in 2027. Standalone BESS has faced the 55% threshold since January 1, 2026. The sole named exception is Hunan Yuneng, the market leader at 30% global share. The IEA flagged this structural condition in February 2026, before the lithium carbonate spike even began.

Current LFP cell prices already embed upstream losses that cathode producers cannot absorb forever. The IEA identifies two resolution paths: consolidation or restored pricing power. Both push cell costs up. Lithium retreating from its May peak treats the input symptom. The structural condition underneath remains untouched.
