On April 21, 2026, in Brantley County, Georgia, one of these balloons touched a power line, and within a week 22,614 acres were burning, 90 homes were gone, and the governor had declared a state of emergency across 91 counties. No equivalent statute in Georgia requires a warning label.

The documents that explain how this happened don't agree on what "this" is. Each one answers to a different clock. The last is sixty-eight years old and 2,400 miles from Nahunta.

Ninety-Four Percent of the Southeast in Drought

The drought started in July 2025. It never broke. By mid-April 2026, 94% of the region from Florida to Virginia had reached severe-or-worse drought. Nine months of precipitation deficits: 8 to 16 inches. The recharge season that normally restores groundwater and streamflows did not arrive.

Helene's Downed Trees Are Still in the Woods

Hurricane Helene crossed nearly 14,000 square miles of Georgia forestland in September 2024. The state spent $135 million on cleanup. The Army Corps hauled millions of cubic yards. "There's only so much you can do short of bulldozing everything," a forestry commission spokesperson said. Nineteen months later, the rest is still there.

Driest Start to a Year Since 1895

January through March 2026: 4.79 inches of precipitation nationally. The previous record was 5.27 inches, set in 1910. Drier than the Dust Bowl winters. NOAA's records go back 131 years. Nothing in them looks like this quarter.

As of April 21, 2026, drought covered 62.78% of the Lower 48. That is the worst spring reading in the U.S. Drought Monitor's 26-year history. It sits 2 to 3 percentage points behind the all-time record, set in September 2012. September is supposed to be worse than April.

Jacksonville's rainfall deficit exceeds 25 inches. From Brunswick to Waycross, the fire zone, the deficit runs 15 to 20 inches. Officials say only a tropical system could reverse it. None is forecast. The deficit is not a prediction. It is an absence already measured.

Kevin Crews Died Fighting the Fifth Fire

James "Kevin" Crews, 59, of the Hilliard Volunteer Fire Department, suffered a medical emergency battling the Old Dixie Highway Fire on April 23. It was a 500-acre blaze. It was the fifth wildfire near Hilliard in one week. It was not the largest fire burning that day.
