McKinleyville, California, beside the county's airport microgrid. January 2046.
Behind the nightstand the carpet was gritty with something, dust or sand tracked in on shoes, and the wall was colder than the room. Above it the sash had been lowered onto the cord and rested there, and air came through the gap smelling of rain. Carla's fingers found the faceplate, then the two slots, then lost them. She had turned off the lamp to see outside, and now she couldn't see her own hand.
Through the window, Ben Ruelas stood at the bottom of her lawn under a headlamp, rain slanting through its cone. He held the end of the orange cord against his chest to keep the plug out of the gutter. The gutters on this street ran full every January. Tonight the water was black and curb-high and loud, fast enough to roll stones, and he had stood in it to cross.
The prongs went in on the second try.
His light swung away and bobbed back over the street to his side, where every house was dark, porches and windows and the streetlight on his corner.
In her hallway the nightlight sagged and recovered, so quickly she might have imagined it. Downstairs the refrigerator went on humming. She had lived above that sound for seven years and could not have said what it sounded like.
The hatch was in the floor of Ben's coat closet, under the boots. He lay on his stomach with his head and one shoulder through the opening, and the crawlspace breathed up at him: wet soil, mildew, the rubbery smell of the plastic sheeting laid over the dirt.
The sump pump sat in a plastic pit sunk below the sheeting, the lowest point under the house. When he left to cross the street, the water had been an inch below the pit's rim. Now it was level with the rim, and the sheeting around it had lifted in soft blisters where more was pushing up from the ground beneath.
Then the motor caught. The outflow pipe jumped and knocked the floor beam above it. In the headlamp the water dropped a finger's width, then two. The motor cut out and a valve in the pipe slammed shut. He felt it in his sternum before he heard it.
9:14.
That afternoon, kneeling in the mud down there, he had drawn a line with a carpenter's pencil on the cinderblock post beside the furnace, two inches below its base. Water in the furnace meant no heat for the rest of January, and a repair he couldn't pay for until spring.
9:19. The knock.
He backed out of the hole, sat against the coats, and typed with thumbs that wouldn't bend right: Running. Thank you. 5 min.
Outside, the pipe emptied onto his side yard. The yard couldn't take any more. Some of that water, he knew, was sliding back along the foundation and down through the soil into the pit, to be pushed out again.
Five years ago, at the open house, he had stood in that side yard and felt his boots settle. The agent said everything out here got a little soft in spring. The house across the street had the same floor plan, same builder, same year, and had sold the month before for ninety-one thousand dollars more. Its listing said Inside the airport microgrid! Lights stay on when the county goes dark. His said Great bones. He'd worked out the difference on a napkin and felt clever about it.
His breath was showing in the hallway now.
Carla read his text with her hands in dishwater.
She hadn't known the county was out until his side went black. Nothing in her house had blinked. The floor under her socks was warm, as it always was. She had never thought of the floor as having a temperature.
Her porch light was on. So were the Kesslers' and the Paiks', all the way down her side. On mornings after outages, kids from across the street walked the length of her side to the bus stop, under those lights. Nobody's parents mentioned it.
She dried her hands and opened the utility app. Most nights her usage was a flat line with a small hump at dinner. Tonight there was a row of narrow spikes, evenly spaced, regular as a pulse, and none of them were hers. The first sat at 8:52. She watched the next one climb and looked at the stove clock.
In a folder somewhere was the closing packet, and in it a page saying her service was for the address of record only. She had initialed the bottom. She could remember the pen better than the sentence.
Last January he had come to her step with the cord coiled on his shoulder, wet to the knees, and asked the way you'd ask to borrow a ladder. Two days later a bag of smoked salmon appeared on her porch rail. Tonight his text had come at 8:31, one word, Cord?, and she had gone upstairs and raised the window before she answered.
At 10:31:
AIRPORT GRID: Your home is on local power during a regional outage. Restoration time is not yet known. To keep power available for everyone inside, please reduce nonessential use. Thank you.
She got this text two or three times a winter. Usually she stopped the dryer and forgot about it. Everyone inside. She looked at the spikes again.
On the neighborhood board someone had posted a photo of her orange cord slung across the gutter with water standing around it. Whose is this? Below that: Ruelas pump I think. Then Dale Kessler: We're all on the same batteries tonight people. Then an account she didn't recognize: good for them.
She didn't reply. She switched off the light over the stove.
A little before eleven she went out onto the porch in her socks to look at the cord. It came down the siding from her bedroom window, through the lavender, across the lawn and into the gutter, where the current had it and pulled it taut as fishing line. The boards were wet. The cold came straight up through the wool.
Next door Hana Paik stood on her own step in a parka, a mug in both hands. Her porch light was on. Behind her, through the front window, the house was dark except for a camp lantern on the living room floor with two sleeping bags curled around it.
"Fifty-two in there," Hana said. "They think it's camping."
Two winters ago, in the long one, the batteries had held for thirty hours. Then this side went dark with the rest of the county for most of an afternoon. What Carla remembered of that afternoon was mostly Theo Paik, six then, standing on her kitchen tile in snow pants eating crackers out of the box, because her house held its warmth an hour longer than his. He asked her when it would come back. She looked at her phone as if it might know.
Hana blew across the mug. Her eyes went down the lawn to the gutter and stayed there.
"We've got a spare lantern," she said. "If you want it."
"I'm okay," Carla said.
Hana nodded and went in. The lantern moved across the window and settled.
Inside, Carla turned the thermostat down two degrees and stood in the hall in her damp socks, waiting to feel the difference. The floor was warm. It went on being warm.
Ben's garage freezer had stopped at seven. By ten the frost on its walls had gone wet. Inside were two Dungeness crab off a boat at the harbor in December, ground elk from his brother, half a loaf of bread.
He lit the camp stove on the concrete and the blue ring hissed. While the water heated he went to the hatch twice. Four minutes fifty between knocks. Then four-forty. The water around the furnace post had reached the pencil line, and the line was getting hard to see.
4:40, he sent.
He carried the pot across. The gutter came over the tops of his boots and the cold closed on his ankles, then his calves. He rang. Inside, the chime sounded, clear and ordinary, and it startled him. He hadn't heard anything electric since seven.
Steam came off the pot and fogged the porch light.
"Freezer's going," he said. "It's going either way."
She took it. The handles were hot through the towel, and the weight pulled her shoulders forward.
"I've got room in mine," she said. "For the rest."
He looked past her at the kitchen, the lit hall, her socks on the warm floor. "You've got the pump," he said.
His phone buzzed in his jacket. A timer, not a message. He was already turning, and then he was in the street, the headlamp shrinking toward his door.
She ate standing at the counter, cracking the legs with her hands, juice running to her wrists. She took out the butter and was halfway to the microwave before she stopped and put it back. She ate the crab plain.
Each time a spike rose on the app, she watched the hallway and waited for the nightlight.
By one in the morning the knocks were three-forty apart.
Ben lay on a couch cushion by the hatch in his coat and hat. Other things in the house wanted the cord: the freezer, the furnace fan, a lamp. At eight o'clock he had chosen without feeling himself choose. The pump kept water off the furnace, and the furnace kept the house, and the house was the mortgage and the floor his daughter crossed in her socks every other weekend, the one thing he owned that was worth more than he owed on it, though not by much.
Past the end of the street the airport beacon turned and threw its light across his ceiling, green, then white.
He typed 3:40 sorry. He deleted sorry.
At her door she hadn't looked at the crab. She had looked at him, then over his shoulder at his dark house, and he had seen her working the same sum he'd worked crossing the gutter, the pot on one side and the cord on the other.
The pipe knocked. He started counting again from zero.
2:38:
AIRPORT GRID: Reserve is lower than forecast. Water heaters and heating systems inside the service area may be cycled off remotely. Please limit use to essentials.
A minute later the heat stopped. She didn't hear it stop. She heard the room afterward, a quiet with a different shape, and under it, from downstairs, a low hum she couldn't place, and then could. The refrigerator.
Her feet were warm under the blanket. She drew them up anyway, knees to her chest. By morning the floor would be cold. She tried to find, in seven years of mornings, one step onto a cold floor in this house. Her soles didn't remember any.
The phone kept waking on the nightstand. 3:30. Later, 3:20. The nightlight in the hall dipped, and dipped again. She was counting the gaps before she knew she was doing it, the way you count after lightning.
Essentials. At three in the morning she didn't know what the word meant. The batteries out past the runway were shared. The Kesslers were asleep on them, and the Paiks on their living room floor, and the kids who would walk to the bus under her porch light in five hours.
She reached down behind the nightstand, past the gritty carpet and the cold wall, found the cord, and followed it to the plug. It was warm. Warmer than plastic should be, warm like a forehead at the start of a fever. She closed her hand around it.
In the hall the nightlight dipped and came back. Downstairs the refrigerator hummed, and she heard it.
The phone lit with his next number. She didn't turn her head. Her hand stayed where it was.

The real airport microgrid: The California Energy Commission's final report on the Redwood Coast Airport Microgrid records 63 islanding events across 38 months for its 19 customers, and notes that resilience is hard to put a price on, which is one reason projects like it are difficult to replicate.

Rules on sharing power: PG&E's Electric Rule 18 bars customers from supplying electricity to premises outside their service application, with narrow exceptions that don't cover one private house helping another.

A real conservation request: After Hurricane Helene, customers powered by the Hot Springs, North Carolina microgrid were asked to conserve so the town's supply would last, a working precedent for the texts Carla receives.
