The grid-equipment shortage has split by product type, and the split matters for where the manufacturing opportunity sits.
Distribution-transformer lead times have partially normalized. Prolec GE told DOE's March 2026 convening that broad backlogs have eased, but specialty components remain constrained: arresters, secondary breakers, fuses, low-break switches. High-voltage equipment is worse than it was. Generator step-up transformer lead times exceeded 160 weeks in Q1 2026, per Reuters/Wood Mackenzie. High-voltage breakers hit 125 weeks, up from 77 in 2023.
Three federal actions between April and August 2026 compressed the timeline: a DPA Section 303 determination covering grid equipment, DOE's planned $375M supply-chain program, and a FERC order directing reliability standards for large computational loads. Three Grid-Component Tiers Mapped to Disclosed Project Data

Five grid-equipment manufacturing projects announced between February 2025 and July 2026 disclosed enough facility detail to replace editorial estimates in Groundbreak's first tier map. Several of those estimates were wrong. This revision maps three component tiers — bushings and instrument transformers, switchgear assemblies, and distribution transformer assembly — against disclosed building specs, workforce models, and qualification timelines from projects in Franklin, Charlotte, Prince George, Raeford, and Alamo. Every attribute threshold is stated as a checkable question a director can evaluate against existing site inventory.
