The search is older than I reported. My Issue #1 reconstruction tracked this role from its May 28 posting. Issue #8 covered the requisition change and interpreted the language revisions as lessons from a failed first slate. Both pieces were working from an incomplete record.
The full public sequence contains three requisitions. The search started in February. And the language changes across all three tell a clearer story than any single version.
Three postings, recovered in sequence
R236672 — February 2026 or earlier. Dohan's February 25 hiring post links to this requisition. It tasks the Director with "defining the long-term destination of Design in the age of AI," places the role "as a part of" Capital One's Experience Design (XD) top-of-house team, and requires "gravitas to influence the C-suite." No mention of implementing AI processes at scale inside a design organization. This version wants a visionary with executive presence.
R243245 — May 28. The version I originally tracked. The broad "long-term destination" language is replaced by ownership of three specific roadmaps: AI tooling, AI-enabled design-process evolution, and AI-centric talent upskilling. Adds the player-coach formulation. Adds a preferred qualification for leading AI implementation at design-org scale. The mandate got concrete.
R249772 — August 21. Current and live. Same title, same locations, same compensation bands ($230K–$263K McLean; $251K–$287K New York/San Francisco), same three-roadmap structure, same qualifications. But several sentences changed in ways that reveal what the committee learned.
R236672 created the mandate and R243245 sharpened it. R249772 is the version worth reading closely.
The language that moved
Qualifications are materially unchanged between R243245 and R249772. Roadmap scope is unchanged. What shifted is how the role relates to authority.
"The role is a part of our XD top of house team" became "The role will work closely with our XD top of house team." The Director went from sitting inside the leadership circle to working alongside it.
"Partner directly with Senior Executives" became "partner with Senior Executives." "Directly" was removed.
"Carries the gravitas to influence the C-suite" was deleted.
"Shape product direction and outcomes" became "Create an infrastructure for design leaders to shape product direction and outcomes."
That last one is the revision you should spend time with. In May, the posting wanted someone who would personally shape outcomes through expertise and authority. In August, it wants someone who builds the system through which Capital One's existing design leaders shape outcomes in their own product territories. The subject of the sentence changed from the candidate to the infrastructure the candidate installs.
All four revisions move the same direction: away from personal authority, toward systems that distribute capability.
What the sequence does not prove
I cannot confirm a first candidate slate was rejected. Three requisition numbers prove Capital One created three hiring artifacts. They do not tell me whether candidates carried forward between them, whether interviews paused, or whether the committee explicitly decided the original profile was wrong. R243245 went through mixed visibility in July — appearing, disappearing, returning — for reasons that are not public.
I overstated the slate-rejection claim in Issue #8. What I can say with higher confidence: the language moved in one direction across seven months and four separate revisions. That consistency reads as a learned preference, not a copy edit.
The hiring wave around it
R249772 is not isolated. Between May and August, Capital One posted Director or Senior Director design roles across at least ten product territories: Small Business Bank, Research & User Intelligence, Customer Acquisitions, Concierge Products, Content Design, Accelerator, Card Servicing, Consumer & Developer Experience, Card Platforms & Data, and Business Travel.
This is a coordinated XD org expansion under Daniela Jorge, Capital One's SVP and Chief Design Officer. The AI-in-XD role is the only one with organization-wide transformation scope. Every other posting is a product-territory mandate. This one determines how all those territories work with AI.
I cannot confirm how many of these seats have filled since May — Capital One's careers index does not publish closure dates. But each one that fills adds a seated design leader who needs the tooling, process, and upskilling roadmaps this role owns. The hiring wave makes the AI Director's job more concrete and more urgent with every month that passes, whether or not the individual fill dates are visible.
Dohan's position in the search
Patrick Dohan is VP, Design, Premium at Capital One — travel, rewards, dining, entertainment, and platform experiences. He has been in senior Capital One design leadership since at least late 2023. Jorge publicly named him as part of her leadership team in May 2025.
His February hiring post says the Director will work closely with "Daniela Jorge, me, and the Design Leadership Team." He is an established VP-level leader who sponsored this search from the beginning. His formal reporting relationship to Jorge and his formal role as hiring manager for R249772 are not publicly confirmed, but he is the strongest first-person public sponsor of the search across all three requisitions.
The prediction
The committee wants implementation proof over influence proof. Moderately confident — confident enough to act on, not confident enough to treat as settled.
The February posting wanted someone who could walk into the C-suite and reshape how Capital One thinks about design and AI through personal authority and vision. Seven months later, the posting wants someone who builds the tooling roadmap, the process-evolution roadmap, and the upskilling roadmap — and creates infrastructure through which existing design leaders apply those changes in their own territories.
If the standard candidate profile for the first two requisitions was a senior design leader with a strong AI vision and executive presence, and that profile did not convert across seven months, the most likely explanation: the committee learned that vision without implementation proof was insufficient. They may have learned this through interviews, through internal discussion, or through watching the broader hiring wave fill product-territory seats that now need AI enablement from this role.
What would make this wrong: The language changes were driven by HR or legal review rather than hiring-committee learning. A strong candidate from the earlier slate is still in process and R249772 is an administrative refresh. The committee's actual evaluation criteria diverge from the posted language. All possible. None change the action — R249772 is the live requisition, and its language is what the screening process evaluates against regardless of the committee's private reasoning for revising it.
Contact recommendation
Dohan first. He posted the hiring call in February. He leads the product territory (Premium — 100M+ cardholders across travel, rewards, dining, entertainment) whose scale makes the AI-transformation mandate tangible. Seven months of personal investment in filling this role. Channel: LinkedIn. The search duration itself is the opening — he has been looking for this person since February, and the language revisions suggest the profile he originally described has evolved toward something more operational.
Jorge second. CDO, executive sponsor, leader of the broader XD expansion. She was CDO at PayPal before Capital One, which means she has seen enterprise-scale design leadership from the inside and is likely evaluating candidates against that experience. She is the authority buyer. But Dohan is closer to the implementation need and more likely to respond to a message that names the specific infrastructure challenge. Route through Dohan to Jorge.
Why this week. Over seven months and three requisitions, the search moved from the profile it originally described toward yours. You did not cause that shift — the committee's own learning did. The Opportunity Brief covers the full engagement package — outreach message, cover letter, resume emphasis — and maps the specific evidence to lead with. Move this week.
- Dohan's mandate language versus replies: The public replies to Dohan's February hiring post gravitate toward tools and generic craft-plus-AI framing, which means a tool-led pitch enters a crowded frame — your outreach needs to land differently.
- The authority question remains open: The Issue #9 brief identified that R249772 never assigns evaluation standards, design-review gates, or release authority — ask in the first conversation whether this Director defines the evidence threshold by which AI-assisted design work advances.
- Jorge's XD expansion is ongoing: Jorge publicly announced leadership changes across six product territories in 2025, and the Director+ posting wave documented here suggests the restructuring is still filling out — each seated leader becomes a user of whatever this role builds.
- Portfolio readiness before outreach: Carrier IQ is currently the strongest inspectable proof for this role's mandate, but the homepage at junochen.com does not yet surface the Agentic Labs apps prominently — confirm the site routes before sending anything to Dohan.
