Trigger
The Director, Product Design - AI in Experience Design role (R243245, posted 05/28) no longer surfaces in Capital One's Design Jobs category or keyword search as of July 3, though the direct URL still resolves and a new Senior Director, Research & User Intelligence posting (R244903, June 18) links to it via similar jobs. Confidence: moderate. The posting is liminal, but the organizational mandate is confirmed by signals predating it by months.
Window
The long weekend clears inboxes. Outreach that anchors to the organizational problem rather than a req number is valid now and stays valid through July.
The ambiguous posting status works in your favor. When a req is cleanly live, you compete with every applicant in the Workday funnel. When it's in limbo, a direct message to the CDO about the organizational problem positions you as someone who understands the mandate, someone who found the question before the listing. If R243245 is paused for pipeline reset, H2 headcount unlocks mid-July and the req likely resurfaces in revised form within 2–4 weeks. If it's been filled, one director cannot govern AI adoption across several hundred designers alone. More seats are coming.
What this probably means for the design org
Capital One's XD org spans several hundred designers across UX, UI, service design, content, research, AI, and accessibility. R243245 was explicitly top-of-house: work with the SVP/CDO and senior leadership to define how Design works with AI, own roadmaps for AI tooling, process evolution, and talent upskilling across the entire org.
A LinkedIn hiring post from February 2026 shows this mandate existed months before the May careers-page posting. The need has been real and unfilled for at least four months.
The search-surface inconsistency at 36 days post-posting reads like a pipeline reset: first search didn't close, req pulled for revision. R244903 posting three weeks later strengthens this reading. R244903 is a parallel build, a separate leadership seat on a separate track. Its preferred qualifications call for "experience developing AI-enabled continuous-discovery tools or programs" and "extracting insights from synthetic data or personas and building automated research workflows." AI as research methodology infrastructure. Daniela Jorge is building multiple leadership seats simultaneously across two distinct AI-integration tracks: design practice and research intelligence. I'm reading from pattern here, not direct evidence. But it's a buildout pattern. Multiple seats, multiple tracks, staggered postings.
The core question remains: when hundreds of designers start using Claude, Gemini, and agentic workflows in their daily practice, who ensures quality, governance, and decision integrity at scale? Capital One holds more agentic and generative AI patents than any other financial institution. The further along they are, the more acute the governance gap becomes.
Your angle
Lead with "Trust Is the New Interface" and Agentic Labs. Do not lead with case studies.
This is an org-transformation role. The buyer is asking "can you define how my org works with AI without breaking quality or trust?" Your Trust essay answers that directly. Users anchor to worst outcome, not average accuracy. One confident wrong answer does more damage than ten correct ones repair. Consistency is what the design delivers. Apply that framework to an internal design org adopting AI tools and it becomes the governance model Capital One needs.
Agentic Labs proves you're not theorizing. Brand Pulse, Retail Velocity, Carrier IQ are live agentic systems where you made the autonomy-threshold decisions this role requires at scale. The hook: "I've built the agentic workflows you're trying to install across your org, and I've published the trust framework that governs when they should act and when they should stop."
Alibaba ($50B+ GMV, +20% transactions) and Thermo Fisher ($20M+ margin, pharma, 100% adoption) serve one purpose here: proving you've operated at enterprise scale in regulated environments. Don't lead with them. Reference them only when asked about organizational credibility.
Who to contact
Daniela Jorge, SVP and Chief Design Officer, Capital One. Joined in 2023 after CDO at PayPal (2020–2023, 425M customers, 34M merchants) and VP Design at AT&T (500 designers). She's roughly 2.5 years in. Past the learning phase, deep into building the org she wants. R243245 and R244903 are both her buildout.
Public fingerprint:
- In her CDO interview, she said AI gives designers "accelerated starting points" that designers then "customize, edit, and refine with discretion, creativity, and contextual knowledge," and immediately flagged safeguards around risk, bias, and creative rights.
- Her UXDX 2025 talk was "Driving Transformational Business Results: The Role of Design Across the Org."
- A September 2025 LinkedIn post celebrated a decade of Experience Design at Capital One.
All three signals point the same direction: design as organizational capability, design as business driver. She talks about design the way a COO talks about operations.
Warm intro path: No confirmed mutual connection through BCG DV, Alibaba, ADPList, or Dive Club surfaced. PayPal design alumni network is the most plausible indirect path. If you know anyone from PayPal's design org 2016–2023, ask. Otherwise cold.
Channel: LinkedIn DM. Her profile shows active posting. Send Tuesday July 8 or Wednesday July 9.
Outreach messages
Warm message (if a PayPal design connection surfaces):
"Hi Daniela — [Name] suggested I reach out. I've been following Capital One's AI-in-Experience-Design mandate, and the organizational question it raises is one I've been working on directly: when agentic systems enter a design practice at scale, where does autonomy end and human judgment begin? I published a framework on this ('Trust Is the New Interface') and built three live agentic products that test those thresholds in production. I'd welcome 20 minutes to share what I've learned and hear how you're thinking about governance across XD. Here's the essay: [link]."
Cold message:
"Hi Daniela — your framing in the Capital One CDO interview stuck with me: AI gives designers 'accelerated starting points,' but discretion, creativity, and contextual knowledge stay human. That's the exact tension I've been building around. I published 'Trust Is the New Interface' — a framework for where agentic autonomy should end and human judgment should begin — and I've shipped three live agentic products that test those boundaries in production. I'd love to share what I've learned about governing that transition at scale. Would 20 minutes work in the next couple weeks?"
What not to say:
- Do not reference the R243245 posting status or ask whether the role is still open. It signals you're watching the careers page, which puts you in the applicant pool rather than the conversation.
- The posting lists Claude, Gemini, Windsurf as preferred qualifications. Every candidate who read the listing will lead with tools. Daniela is hiring for judgment at scale. Lead with judgment.
The non-obvious thing
Capital One's Chat Concierge is a live multi-agentic system for car buying with agents handling natural language understanding, action planning, hallucination validation, and plan explanation. In production, serving customers. Which means Capital One's XD org is already designing for agentic handoffs in live products, and the governance questions your Trust essay addresses are operational problems they're solving right now.
Go one layer deeper. Capital One's 2022 UX-for-AI article by their VP of Data Experience Design argued that UX designers should treat "AI actions under the hood" as part of the user experience and called for "experience monitoring" as a design discipline. That was four years ago. R243245 is the organizational answer to the question that article raised. Knowing this lineage signals depth no other candidate will have. Reference Chat Concierge if you get the meeting.
Warning signs
The search-surface inconsistency could mean R243245 was filled and the direct URL is a Workday artifact. If filled, your entry point narrows from "candidate for this seat" to "thought partner on the broader mandate." Verify through the conversation itself: ask about the AI-in-XD mandate broadly, not the specific req. Her answer will tell you whether the seat is open, restructured, or taken.
This mandate has been publicly visible since at least February and unfilled as of July. At a growth-stage company, a four-month-open Director search would be a red flag. At Capital One it's normal operating tempo for a regulated financial institution with a several-hundred-person design org. If speed and autonomy are your primary motivators, calibrate expectations accordingly. The buildout is real. It moves on institutional time.
- R244903 as conversation opener: The live Senior Director, Research & User Intelligence posting asks for AI-enabled continuous-discovery tools and automated research workflows, which gives you a second entry point if the AI-in-XD conversation stalls.
- Daniela's org-design philosophy: Her Finding Our Way podcast appearance from the PayPal era describes customer experience reviews that surface "when products reflect the org chart," a framing worth echoing if you get the meeting.
- Patrick Dohan as secondary contact: The February 2026 LinkedIn hiring post attributes the AI-in-XD vision to Patrick Dohan on Capital One's Design Leadership Team, making him a potential direct-line contact if Daniela doesn't respond.
- Capital One's patent position: Their June 2025 AI article claims recognition as the only financial institution among top U.S. patent leaders in agentic and generative AI, which is useful context for demonstrating you've done your homework if the conversation advances.
