The SNA's public event listings tell you where to go and when. What they leave out is the part that actually keeps people home: what happens in the first sixty seconds after you walk in. Each gathering type has its own mechanics, and the mechanics do most of the social work for you.
The coffee. Fourth Saturday mornings, the SNA board sets up at Railroad Espresso, 705 Monterey, 9 to 10 a.m. You order coffee like any other morning. The board is there to be approached. The SNA's own framing: "Swing by for some java and meet your board and your neighbors." You don't need a topic or a complaint. You need a cup.
The work day. Last Sunday of the month, 10 a.m., corner of Hearst and Detroit. The Detroit Steps Maintenance Day provides all supplies. Your first minute is someone handing you gloves and pointing you toward a section of stairway. The task comes before the conversation, which makes the conversation easier when it arrives.
The potluck. December 6, 2 to 5 p.m., Sunnyside Conservatory, 236 Monterey. The building is ordinarily closed to the public; it opens for permitted events, and the SNA's annual Holiday Potluck is one of them. There's no kitchen inside the octagonal room, so everyone carries something in. The dish in your hands gives you a reason to ask where things go, and someone a reason to show you.

Holiday Potluck — Dec 6, 2–5 p.m. Sunnyside Conservatory, 236 Monterey Blvd. Bring a dish. Capacity: 70 people. Street parking only.
What you don't need for any of them: An invitation. Prior attendance. A name to drop. The SNA's events are framed as open — "everyone is welcome" appears in their public posts without qualification.
One thing that helps: Arriving five minutes after the listed start. Someone else will have already walked in first.
