We started with a name on a park sign at Baden and Martha. Dorothy Erskine spent decades arguing that rough open space deserved protection. In 1978 the city bought that rocky hilltop instead of letting someone build on it: her conviction, meeting a civic mechanism at the right moment. That turned out to be the pattern everywhere we looked. A speculator's streetcar bet became the street grid.
