Days 1–5

Full heat acclimatization takes seven to fourteen days. Plasma volume expansion, sweat sodium conservation, the cardiovascular adaptation that keeps a body's core temperature below the threshold for organ damage — none of it exists on the first morning of work. Seventy-one percent of occupational heat fatalities occur on the first day of exposure. A proposed federal standard would have capped that first day at 20 percent of a normal shift. It was frozen January 20, 2025. In 44 states, nothing has replaced it.

In September 2021, a woman in a flooded house applied for a FEMA buyout. She was told not to repair the house, not to sell it, and to wait. Over the next four and a half years, her son's asthma was reclassified three times. Mild intermittent to severe persistent. Her mother was hospitalized for COPD exacerbations from the bedroom mold. Her own blood pressure climbed, her weight dropped, her sleep fell to two or three hours a night. The buyout application's status, in every letter, read the same: Under Review. What follows is the chart.

Ingredients: 35°C ambient temperature. 100% relative humidity. One human body, core temperature 37°C. Shade. Drinking water, unlimited. Six hours.
Combine temperature and humidity until the wet-bulb reading reaches 35°C. A 46°C day at 50% humidity will substitute. Place body in shade with water available. Allow to rest.
At saturation, sweat will not evaporate. Metabolic heat has nowhere to go. Core temperature climbs past 40°C. Organs fail in sequence. The shade and water are still there.
Serves one.
