Mike Wintz was nearly four miles from his ranch, fighting the fire, when he heard over the radio that the flames were headed for his home.
He didn't leave. He fought his way back. Neighbors and other volunteer firefighters raced toward the house from the other direction. They stopped the Morrill Fire near his front door. The next day, the winds shifted, the fire flared, and the home was threatened again.
The house survived. Nearly everything else on the Wintz family's 11,000-acre ranch near Bingham did not.
On March 12, 2026, sparks from a downed power pole in Morrill County caught 70-mile-per-hour winds and became the largest documented wildfire in Nebraska history. By the time it was contained on March 29, the Morrill Fire had burned 642,029 acres. For Mike and Kayla Wintz, who had spent 21 years building a cow-calf operation on leased Sandhills rangeland, the fire consumed all of their grazing land in less than six hours. About 900 bales of hay. The hair off their bulls. Singe marks on the backs of their yearlings. And it arrived at the worst possible moment: calving season, the one time you do not want to move cattle.
The stress on pregnant cows cost them six calves. Mike spent the days after the fire moving his herd to a pasture about 90 minutes away, near Ashby in Grant County, where a couple had offered their land. Two hundred bales of donated hay from fellow ranchers sat in the new pasture.
The generosity was real and immediate. The question is what it can carry.
What the grass does
The Nebraska Sandhills are roughly 20,000 square miles of grass-stabilized sand dunes, the largest such formation in the Western Hemisphere. The grass holds the sand. The sand holds the water. The whole system is more resilient than it looks.
After wildfires burned huge swaths of the Sandhills in 2012, during a drought with precipitation 72 percent below normal, researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln spent years collecting plant samples from burned and unburned areas of the Niobrara Valley Preserve. Their finding: within two years, aboveground herbaceous biomass in burned areas had recovered to levels indistinguishable from unburned areas.
"The Sandhills recovered remarkably fast. That's what grasslands do," said Dirac Twidwell, the UNL rangeland and fire ecologist who led the study. "They thrive with fires."
Two years. Maybe less with good rain. The Sandhills have been burning and recovering for thousands of years, long before anyone ran cattle on them. The Morrill Fire, measured against that history, is an event the landscape was built to absorb.
Mike Wintz's operation runs on a different calendar.
What the rancher does
"The impact that it will be this fall is I won't be able to probably keep any replacement heifers for the next year's herd," Wintz told the Flatwater Free Press. "I imagine I'll cull some cows a little bit deeper than I normally would, too. My herd will be reduced, that's for sure."
He projected two to three years of impact on his operation. That estimate assumes the rain comes. Morrill County had been in at least abnormal dryness since October 2024 and was in extreme drought when the fire hit in March. More than 96 percent of Nebraska was in abnormal dryness or worse. The grass needs moisture to come back. Without it, the two-year clock doesn't start.
The ecological recovery and the financial recovery run on completely different clocks. The ecological timeline is peer-reviewed, well-documented, about as settled as rangeland science gets. Two years. The grass returns. But replacement heifers not kept this year means calves not born next year means revenue not earned the year after that. Each season of reduced herd compounds into the next. Donated hay and borrowed pasture carry a family through a season. A restructuring outlasts what generosity can hold.
Twidwell, who has cataloged more than 1,300 wildfires across the Great Plains since 1985, draws a careful distinction. The ecology recovers. The management context is getting harder. A century and a half of fire suppression created what he calls "a more uniform grassland ecosystem," one with continuous fuel loads that carry fire farther and faster than the patchy, fire-maintained landscape that preceded European settlement. The fires are bigger now because the way people managed the grass changed.
"We're entering a new kind of wildfire era for this generation than what past generations have experienced," Twidwell said, "and it's pretty well established on why."
The fire burned through an industry already contracting. Nebraska's cattle-and-calves operations fell from 23,280 in 2012 to 16,958 in 2022, according to Census of Agriculture reports. Nearly 30,000 producers in the state were 65 or older. The consolidation was happening before the fire. The fire accelerates it. A rancher who culls deeper this fall and can't keep replacement heifers next year is a rancher whose herd is smaller in 2028 than it was in 2025, even if every blade of grass is back.
The Wintzes' ranch sits on leased land. Twenty-one years of work, and the ground beneath the operation belongs to someone else. That fact doesn't change the daily reality of ranching. It changes the math of recovery. An owner can wait out a bad stretch differently than a lessee. The lease doesn't pause because the grass burned.
I've seen this pattern in other communities, in other landscapes. The people doing the hardest physical work of recovery are often the ones with the least structural cushion to absorb the cost of it. Their competence, their neighbors' generosity, their willingness to drive 90 minutes to borrowed pasture and start again: all of it is real and all of it functions as quiet evidence that the system works, that the community will get through this. And maybe it will. But "the community gets through this" and "every family in the community gets through this" are different sentences. The consolidation numbers tell you who didn't make it. The names take longer to learn.
What has kept him going, Wintz said, has been his neighbors and folks from across the state who have donated.
And then his own answer to the question underneath everything:
"The Sandhills are resilient. The grass is there. It just needs a little bit of moisture to pop up, and they'll be back. It's just going to be a different year for me: calving different and haying different, summer range different."
A different year. He may mean temporary, a deviation from normal that normal will eventually correct. He may mean altered, a new set of terms requiring a new way of operating. The grass doesn't care which one it is. It just grows. The rancher has to figure it out while the growing happens.
