Everybody Got in Line at Once

A large power transformer is wound by hand, built to specification, in factories running at 98% of global capacity. When one is destroyed, the replacement enters a queue averaging 128 to 144 weeks. The U.S. imports roughly 80%. One company makes the specialized core steel domestically.

Everybody got in line at once. Storm-damaged utilities, data centers chasing 125 gigawatts of new load, renewable interconnection, EV charging buildout, all bidding on the same factory slots while April's restructured tariffs raised every input cost. Two billion in new domestic factory capacity has been announced. It comes online in 2028.

Some argue the shortage is partly a procurement coordination problem, and they may be right. It doesn't help the co-op whose substation transformer blew this spring.

NERC's 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment puts aggregated peak demand across all assessment areas at more than 11 GW above its 2025 figure. Last year's 10 GW jump preceded multiple summer stress events. This one is larger.

FERC projects total summer 2026 electricity consumption at 1,587 TWh, a 3% year-over-year increase, citing EIA data. Electrification, data center buildout, and rising cooling loads are driving the strongest summer growth rate in four years.

Cooling Degree Days Point to a Brutal Quarter

EIA's May 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook projects roughly 1,610 cooling degree days nationally, 4% above 2025. Third-quarter projections run 8% above the prior year and 5% above the ten-year average. Peak stress concentrates in July through September.

Lake Powell Inflow Hits Lowest Level on Record

The Bureau of Reclamation's May 2026 forecast projects Lake Powell's April–July unregulated inflow at 0.800 million acre-feet, 13% of the historical average. That is the lowest spring runoff since Glen Canyon Dam began operating in 1964. Regional hydropower output falls with it.

Import Decline

Canadian Hydropower Exports Fall to Two-Decade Low

Canadian electricity exports to the U.S. dropped 28% in 2024 to 35.64 TWh, per the Canada Energy Regulator. That was the lowest figure since 2004. Statistics Canada reports exports fell further in 2025, setting a new series low. Drought and rising Canadian domestic demand are both factors.

Infrastructure Grade

Civil Engineers Downgrade U.S. Energy to Near-Failing

ASCE's 2025 Infrastructure Report Card dropped U.S. energy from C- to D+, citing transformer shortages, surging demand from electrification and data centers, and stalled transmission modernization. Since 2000, weather has caused 80% of major electricity outages, most concentrated in the last decade.

Major Blackouts Have Surged Sixty Percent in Five Years

Major U.S. blackout events — those hitting 50,000-plus customers for an hour or more — jumped over 60% in a recent five-year period, according to a peer-reviewed Georgia Tech analysis. Every one of the ten worst central U.S. outages in the past decade was triggered by extreme weather.

Researchers modeled simultaneous heat waves and power failures in Atlanta, Detroit, and Phoenix. Between 68% and 100% of residents faced elevated heat-stroke risk.
