Both Clocks

Tam has spent seven years measuring water temperature in creeks where salmon still hold in the cold patches. Then someone pushes his raw files through the network without his site notes, and inside three days both sides of a fight over the derelict Snake River dams send for him. Same curves, opposite conclusions, same Thursday. He can go west to the council or northeast to the dam. He can't do both. The second chapter of The Underline Series, set in the Pacific Northwest basin of 2071.

Triage Morning

She runs a water treatment plant in a climate-adapted American city, and she's awake before the alarm because rain overnight means the burn scar above the watershed is sending sediment down toward the intake again. She has four obligations before noon, each with a deadline today, each carrying a cost if she misses it. She can do two for certain, three if nothing takes longer than it should. What follows is an ordinary morning in which every choice she makes is defensible and every system keeping score is also, by its own logic, correct.

Same Wind

Eighteen months after a wildfire stopped a quarter mile from their house, three members of a family share a kitchen and cannot share a moment. Eli checks gust readings and maps evacuation routes, his body set to a threshold the weather keeps approaching. His mother Claire speaks in conditionals — "if I moved the dresser," "if the wind keeps up" — never finishing, never committing to a tense. His grandmother June makes sauce from tomatoes grown in delivered soil, eats steadily, and opens the window Eli keeps closing. The wind presses against the house all day.
