The Designation

Three years ago a woman started growing food off a cold spring in Oregon's abandoned interior — hand-cut channels, terraced beds, calories and a trade surplus on ground the maps had zeroed out. This week a compact surveyor walks in with a tablet and a length of rebar to designate that spring as a protected thermal refuge. The designation puts her coordinates in a registry every armed faction in the basin can query, and reclassifies her water as habitat flow she'd need fourteen months of paperwork to touch. Her beans have three weeks.

First Night Back

Insurance paid. The house went back up to spec — ember screens on the vents, rated roof, a hundred feet of cleared ground and gravel around the foundation. Four inspections, all passed, notice signed and dated. A family moves back in on a September evening with the air clean and the fire risk low, and their seven-year-old stands in the hall asking which bedroom is hers, because she was four when they left. Light switches are stiff. The cabinets don't make a sound. The go-bag is in the front closet where you'd grab it on the way out. Around ten the wind shifts out of the south, and both parents are sitting up in the dark before either one says anything.

Road F

An island community on the North Carolina coast has been relocated inland, and by every measure the move worked. Good drainage, solid construction, houses that stay dry. But seven streets still carry temporary designations from the site plan, and a county signage grant means they need real names. At the meeting, residents begin proposing: Silver Lake, Howard Street, Schoolhouse Creek. Each name arrives with a body attached to it — the sulfur off exposed mud at low tide, sand packed by generations of walking, a ferry's approach felt through dock planks before the horn sounds.

Additional comments (optional):
The pharmacy here doesn't carry my daughter's formulation. My pharmacist in Slidell had it on auto-refill nine years and would call if we were late picking up. Community garden hours are 9 to 5 weekdays, same as my shift at the distribution center, so I don't know who that schedule is for. I rated safety yes because it's true, the unit sits 40 feet above the flood plain. But the creek behind D-block ran sulfurous all July and when I called facilities they said it wasn't in their scope. Marquette who had my spare key got placed in 47-C across the ridge. We haven't spoken since intake. I dream about the water still, maybe twice a week. I know that's not what this form is for.
